A View Into My Universe

Grandsons Galore

Older Daughter planned a 3rd birthday party for Obro at a sort of activities center near her house for this morning, and YD had confidently told me that she intended to go. Then this morning, she sent me this text, “I don’t know what I was thinking, imagining that I could get a toddler and a 4 day old baby out the door!” Naturally, I was delighted to offer to pick up Anders and take him out to the festivities. That was before we had to park miles away (Proctor Farmers’ Market!); then Anders wanted me to carry him and his beloved Rabbit and Dino. “Up, up!” Thankfully, he was entranced by the various cars and trucks parked along the road and wanted to walk part of the way. But my aching back!

This was before the zillions of kids and parents arrived; I’m hesitant to share photos of other children. In this shot, Obro was singing a song about rainbows since there were several in prominent locations. Anders ate most of the fruit on the snack plates and had a melt down when I wouldn’t allow him to eat a second birthday cupcake. I nonchalantly moved him from the floor to the carpet, “This is a better place to have your tantrum–so you won’t hurt yourself.” LOL

When I dropped Anders off, I invited myself in to visit Ian. He’s a tiny guy who has lost too much weight and doesn’t want to eat. He prefers SLEEPING. That might sound great, but it’s not in this case. Younger Daughter is frantic, so I stayed around a while to talk, reassure her and hold this little sweetheart.

I’m really not that soporific a person! Snuggling Ian while in my late mom’s coat made me think about her own love of babies. She would have oohed and ahhed over him and admired his adorable features; he’s the only one of her great-grandsons she didn’t live to meet. 😢

I finally got to see his eyes! I’m sure they’ll either end up blue (YD) or green (Dad). Anders had bright blue eyes for a year and half or so, but they’ve gradually turned green. Although I like green eyes, I was strangely disappointed.

I’m sure you remember my prediction about the other grandparents. They did indeed bring these gorgeous roses for my daughter and spent some time with Ian. But will they be any practical help or support in the future? I would bet not. I’m hoping to be surprised.

Now it’s off on a walk before it gets dark at 4:30 p.m. Bah! However, I still want to stay on Standard Time for the whole year, in spite of this “Big Dark.” Being retired makes it easier for me to say that!

I always enjoy reading what you have to say (and Anders demands gave me a chuckle) but Baby Ian is just beautiful. These are wonderful photos.

He has beautiful features but is tiny–only in the high 5 pound range. He’s not supposed to lose weight! My daughter is extremely concerned although he did take a rather large (for him) bottle after I visited; his diapers have also been productive. 😉 TMI?

Haha no Margaret, not tmi! I can understand your concern, I hope he gains that weight back soon! And yes, a beautiful baby for sure. :^)

Non-productive diapers would mean a trip to the Emergency Room. It’s a relief to see that he is eating and drinking some, if not as much as we think he ought to.

That is the best photo of you holding little Ian! And the one of Obro and Anders, and, well they are all wonderful. Sleeping babies are growing babies – it’s hard work!

Thank you! There’s always something to worry about with children, even when they’re adults. 😬 It’s very nice to be able to easily insert photos in WordPress; it was such a chore in Typepad.

Sometimes I think that worrying about loved ones engages us with life and keeps us going. If so, you’re destined for many more years! You have lots of reasons to get up each morning.

      2. Margaret Avatar

It feels like the worrying can’t be good for me, but it isn’t obsessive and I have good coping strategies.

It was nice to get up close to the little fella.

Yes, he’s lovely! I do wish I had taken a photo of him in the crib from farther away. That would’ve shown how truly small he is.

What an adorable little thang! I think it’s normal for newborns to lose some weight right after birth. Was the pediatrician concerned about it? He looks very healthy for being so “wee.”

I had to chuckle about “getting a toddler and 4-day-old out the door!” (Plus herself!) I remember how difficult it was for me after just two weeks, and I didn’t have a toddler, too!

    Crazy times! Wonderful times!

YD is ambitious and not always realistic! It’s not only the two kids either, but also all their gear. I’ve been dealing with that with Anders and it’s no picnic. Ian is a very pretty baby but has lost too much of his body weight. They are concerned and have mentioned a feeding tube. I hope he starts eating more!

I like the way you handled the tantrum. Ian is just beautiful. I think most babies lose a little at first, but he’s a tiny little guy to begin with. I hope he starts to eat better soon. It looks like a fun but exhausting day!

Thanks, tantrums are never fun, but I depersonalize them and treat them calmly. Ian has lost too much of his slight body weight which is the concern. I hope he’s better at tomorrow’s appointment. (or they’ll be talking a feeding tube)

I had to look up preemies because I don’t know anything about them. They sleep 90% of the time as opposed to full term babies that sleep 75% of the time. It’s hard to get feeding in though I would imagine and it takes energy to eat. Poor guy. I assume that the pediatrician is keeping a close eye on him.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, it’s a tricky balance between sleeping but knowing that they have to gain weight. (or at least not lose it) They’ve told YD that he’ll need to have a feeding tube if the weight loss keeps up. Ian has another appointment tomorrow. I think they’ll decide then what to do.

I hope Ian gets an appetite. I helped with Ada. It was all breast milk….pumped and saved. She threw it all up if over jostled or not burped. It was so scary. Ian was a good size to begin with. Maybe it’ll be easier soon. YD might have hemorrhaged if she’d waked that far and carrying Ian.

Glad you are walking. I still can’t. Afraid I’ll never take my long walks again.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Obro used to throw/spit up all the time. Ian hasn’t started that yet although he might as he takes in more food. I hope the feeding gets easier soon and they don’t have to resort to a feeding tube of some kind. 🙁 Knees and backs are such fragile parts of our anatomy! Hope the PT helps you out.

Wonderful photos Margaret. The boys are looking adorable.
Sweet little Ian looks very content with you.
I remember getting out with one baby and it was a big job. YD with a newborn and a toddler will be 2x the experience. Daunting for sure. I’m glad she decided to stay home with Ian.
Carrying Anders is likely getting to be more than your back can tolerate and Anders is only getting heavier. YD needs a 2-baby/toddler carriage. I’ve seen them occasionally and they look ideal.
Getting your daily walk is key. The time spent in nature and the outdoors is lovely this time of year.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, Susan! WordPress makes photo insertion easy, unlike Typepad. It’s tempting to add way too many photos–or is there such a thing! I’m a very chill baby holder and they sense it. 🙂 I like the control of carrying Anders, but I can’t do it for a long period of time. Getting Anders in a stroller is a pitched battle. I don’t know if I could manage it; perhaps my daughter can though. Walking is excellent therapy and FREE!

Our youngest was born a week or so before our oldest started proper school and the middle one started nursery school. It was quite tricky getting the three of them out of the house to be in time for school! And then back to collect L from nursery at lunch time and K from school later on… Ian is beautiful!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s getting them out the door, dressed, fed, teeth brushed, plus all their gear. 😬 I could barely do one, so I can’t imagine three!

Don’t they all lose weight the first week or so? I know Nicholas did, but I also know Ian is a little guy and probably can’t afford to lose any weight.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, they do lose weight. I think he’s just lost too much. He has a doctor appointment today so that will give more information.

  11. Steve Avatar

We get dark around 4:30 too. I hope the doctor gives you and YD some ideas about Ian’s eating and how best to make sure he’s getting the nutrients he needs.

    1. Margaret Avatar

You’re farther north than I am but it’s a similar time. Ian is eating better but not sleeping well, normal for a newborn!

I remember an African American couple next to my bed when I had given birth to our son at a Navy hospital. The baby girl’s pretty eyes were blue-ish. The dad told me that color better change soon. They laughed because apparently that’s been known to happen. My son’s eyes were brown from the start. My daughter’s eyes were more black. One of our friends used to call her Dondi after the cartoon character with large black eyes.

    1. Margaret Avatar

From what I recall, all babies are born with blue eyes, but my older daughter, who has very dark brown eyes, just had a blue rim around the outside. They very quickly turned brown. Everyone told me that Younger daughter’s blue eyes would turn since my husband and I were both brown eyed. But hers stayed bright blue!
