A View Into My Universe

The Weekend of Chandeliers

Although it’s an unprepossessing building from the outside, the interior of the Pink Chandelier is full of beautiful and fancy decor and as its name implies, many elaborate chandeliers. Our High Tea was a special occasion with both daughters and a couple friends; we sampled many teas and (over)ate many goodies. However, it’s definitely a once in a while treat since it wasn’t cheap at all. $320 for five of us, yikes.

I almost hated to unfold the heart shaped napkin!

Screenshot

Where to start? It may not look like much, but we started with a wonderful tomato bisque and then sampled these small savories and desserts. The cake with the raspberry on top was my absolute favorite! I still prefer coffee although I did find a couple tasty varieties of tea. Next time I won’t order a large latte and fill up on it before the high tea even starts. Sigh.

In refrigerator news, my Kenmore Coldspot (birthdate 4/96) seems to be working again for no apparent reason. Pure effing magic, my late husband used to say about the behavior of mechanical and electrical appliances. (note: he didn’t say effing) Sadly, my frozen apples and cottage cheese are ruined, even though they’re thawed. I did look at refrigerators on the Costco website and had tentatively chosen a Whirlpool. I’m still extremely concerned about the height of new refrigerators due to the cabinet that sits above the space in my kitchen. John has volunteered to install the new thermostat I bought from Sears Parts Direct; we’ll see if that solves the now non-existent problem.

Yesterday after our High Tea, Older Daughter came to my house to run through one of her presentations for her Montreal interview. I listened to her French and critiqued a few word choices, corrected some genders and reminded her about subjunctive use. I’m far from excited about a potential move for her and her family, yet I also won’t stand in her way and will be as supportive as possible. John has mentioned numerous times that he doesn’t understand why she would uproot her family, why she would want to live in Montreal and why she would go back to university teaching. I finally told him in a semi-nice way that I did NOT want to discuss it with him. After all, I avoid talking to him about his younger daughter and her secrecy about her daughter’s autism, her lack of communication and honesty about everything, her homeschooling, who her husband and she voted for in the last election, and other issues that I could bring up. On the other hand, he has the tendency to criticize both my daughters which I DO NOT APPRECIATE. Worrying and whining about my kids is my job, right?

On to this happy sweetheart, so full of smiles. He still doesn’t sleep well at all though–a problem for Younger Daughter who is back to work.

For those wondering, I did go out to a late V-Day dinner with John. McMenamin’s Elks Temple is also well known for their chandeliers. They are everywhere and quite impressive! Unfortunately, John and I weren’t impressed by the food we ordered, plus I was disappointed that he didn’t bring me a card. Perhaps I need to stress to John again that I don’t want a fuss, but that I do appreciate cards more than anything else. In fact, my only V-Day card this year was from my blog friend; thanks, Kathy! xoxo

Well, good grief, here it (possibly) is–our traditional February snow. By the temperature, it doesn’t appear that it will be a Snowmaggedon except on the mountain passes. Due to the tricky convergence zones, I’ll believe it when I see it. 🙂

Your February snow looks like a spring warm up to me! No snowflake would stand a chance with those daily highs. The tea date looks like such fun – I’d love to sample all those savory and sweet treats. Followed up by sweet baby smiles – you are one lucky person!

It may be that we’ll get snow at night, then it’ll melt during the morning. Or we won’t get a single flake. Snow is unpredictable around here right next to the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains. The mountains do need lots of snow, so I hope they get it! I loved trying everything; it was like a buffet of small bites. Ian is such a smiley baby!

Owen comes from a card family, so he gave me cards in the beginning, but then he figured out that I don’t come from a card family and that was that. What a fancy tea! You said that your fridge was 30 years old, but then you put ’96 as it’s birthdate. I would swear that 30 years ago was in the 70s or 80s! LOLOL

    1. Margaret Avatar

I come from a card family; John doesn’t really although he has reliably given me cards until the past year or so. Definitely not a deal breaker and I’ll get over it. The tea was very fancy and I enjoyed the experience! 30 years ago seems like it should be a long time and the 90s feel recent. Is it because time is rushing by?

Glad you liked the card! The fancy tea place looks wonderful. All those yummy desserts!

    1. Margaret Avatar

A couple of them were too sweet (according to others) but not for me! I have such a terrible sweet tooth. I really appreciated your card and note; I’m especially glad that you’re enjoying the Welsh mystery series. I have to give my friend Tonya (Kingfisher Cove) credit for that.

      1. Tonya Avatar

I am just ACHING that I’ve finished the Evan Warlow series! He wrote in the afterward that he was done, except that he then announced that #20 was coming out this June! I’m thrilled, but I suspect that WILL be the final book. *Sob* #19 was not a good place to end it all, so this one probably will wrap things up.

      2. Margaret Avatar

I think I’m only up to #5 or so; I’m sure I’ll be bereft like I was at the end of the Ruth Galloway series. We become part of their world; it’s like we know them!

I did the math, $64/person. Ouch. Glad you guys all had a good time though.
My husband took me out for supper last night and I had Szechuan chicken lettuce wraps. I love those things. My tummy was very happy. I would like a card or a single flower, but I’ve given up on that pipe dream and he’s happy with heart shaped chocolate with peanut butter inside.
That’s good of you to help your daughter practice her French prior to her interview. And you’re right about John. You can criticize your kids, but he can’t, and vice versa. I don’t appreciate my husband bad mouthing my kids. I don’t even disagree with him, but I don’t like it.
We’re due to get a dump of snow tonight, but we’ll see.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It ended up being that, although the two expensive lattes that Older Daughter and I had added to the price, plus tax, then a mandatory 18% tip. Our server was excellent! I love lettuce wraps and haven’t had Chinese food for a long time. There aren’t many Chinese restaurants around here these days; they’re mostly Thai or Mexican. It makes my heart ache but I want her to feel good about the interview (and me!) even if she doesn’t get the position. John’s kids are perfect in his eyes whereas I am much more realistic and open. But I still don’t appreciate his criticisms since they’ve always been very nice and friendly to him. I hope you don’t get a dump of snow! It’s cold here now, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a little. It won’t last in the daytime temperatures, thankfully!

Your High Tea looked downright fabulous, wow!!! Loved seeing all the fancy finger-foods, and I suddenly feel like Jed Clampett. $320 for 5 people though–whew! Anyway I was overjoyed to read about the fridge working again Margaret, I hope it stays that way for a good long while. I was anxious to read about you & John’s dinner, I’m sorry that turned out to be a disappointment. Gulp about OD’s upcoming interview and you’re right, only you are allowed to pass judgement when it comes to your own kids!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was a lot, but OD and I each had an expensive latte, then there was tax and an 18% gratuity. We had a great server; she deserved every penny! I was disappointed, although I should have stood up more for what I wanted/didn’t want. That’s on me! I don’t know if the fridge will keep working. I’m scared to get more groceries!

  6. Tonya Avatar

Wow, that was pricey! What an outing, though. I remember us Glam Rams did a “high tea” thing several years ago, and I wasn’t too impressed, considering the cost. I’d probably feel differently if it was savory tapas, though!

    1. Margaret Avatar

To be fair, Older Daughter and I also ordered a latte which added about $10 to the price. There was also tax and a mandatory 18% tip–well-deserved since our server was fantastic. We enjoyed the savory tapas; there really weren’t that many sweet ones and they were small.

Is she applying to work at a French Uni? If she has to interview partly en franacais, I am told that they are very understanding as long as people make an effort. Not that I have any personal experience

    1. Margaret Avatar

She’s a finalist for a position at the Université de Montréal. It is a French speaking school. She’ll do her teaching presentation in French and her research explanation in English, as far as I know. That’s exactly what she’s heard. They want people to make an effort to learn or improve their French, but perfect fluency is not required. Plus, she doesn’t speak québécois; she speaks West African French.

      1. AC Avatar

        This is intriguing.

      2. Margaret Avatar

Preparing for an academic interview is quite unique.

Dear Margaret, I love tea but have never been to a place like in your photos.
Here in Montreal the Queen Elizabeth Hotel is supposedly the best and most costly place for tea and sandwiches, pastries, whatever is served with the tea.
Thank you so much for sharing.
I am very happy that you enjoyed it.

    1. Margaret Avatar

If my daughter and family do move to Montreal, I’ll make sure she takes me to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel!

A tale of two restaurants! The high tea looked delicious. Sometimes I just have to tell myself to just accept whatever the price is for special places, to not let it get in the way of enjoying the experience.
I didn’t realize quebecoise was such a different dialect. Although when we were at Expo 86 in Vancouver they were looking for a Spanish speaker to help translating for another visitor. My Dad stepped up and tried several different dialects before he realized they were speaking Portuguese. He was able to help once he figured that out.

    1. Margaret Avatar

At those prices, it won’t be a weekly or even monthly thing, although I did invite a friend to come up from Olympia for the High Tea. I think she would love it! Canadian French vocabulary and pronunciation are very different! OD did a double take when they told her that after the interview “tu vas luncher avec les professeurs.” (You’ll have lunch with the professors) Franglais! Although Spanish and Portuguese are distinct languages, I’ve heard that speakers of them can understand one another.

    2. kayak woman Avatar

Good old Uncle Harry. Gotta love him <3

  10. Ed Avatar

I would bet that the culprit was likely an object blocking the flow from the vents that got moved to a different location or was used and discarded. Refrigerators are sensitive to things blocking their vents.

We snuck out last night for a Valentine’s dinner but when I checked Google online to make sure it was open on a Monday night before we left, it said “Permanently Closed”. We went anyway and planned on going someplace else if it was indeed closed but it was open and we had the entire place to ourselves the whole time we were there. I did hear them answer the phone a couple times and tell the caller that they were open.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I keep expecting everything to be frozen again and it’s not. A pleasant surprise. John said the same as you, then wanted us to clean the coils underneath. They were filthy! That’s odd about the restaurant; the Permanently Closed designation is going to drive away business. Hope they can get it changed.

You’re having a cold spell looks like.

What a special treat on Valentine’s Day.

Older Daughter surely loves teaching is why she wants to again.

Hope the refrigerator keeps working. John is a good guy! He means well. Your complaints seem to set this conversation. Does he complain about his daughter to you? Just pondering.

    1. Margaret Avatar

This week will be back to winter–for a while! It was a special occasion, so I don’t begrudge the price. OD did love teaching but not everything that went along with it: the competition, the pressure to research and publish, the bureaucracy, the enabling of so many students. The last one might not happen in Canada and didn’t at UCLA when she taught there. It sure did at the small private college where she spent four years though. Fingers crossed on the fridge! John is an extremely nice man. He never complains about his daughter; she’s perfect, according to him. Her parenting choices are always 100% correct. Sigh.

John can’t the the forest for the tree— she is the tree.

I may be like John. My girls are pretty good ladies!

      2. Margaret Avatar

John is a lovely person, but not always the most tactful or empathetic. I think he now understands that I’m upset and worried about the possible move and that it makes me feel worse when he criticizes it.

  12. Midwest Mark Avatar

Really though, $64 a person for all that food and tea isn’t bad. You should see some of our bar tabs.

McMenamin’s is one of the few places we really miss.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Next time we go to McMenamin’s perhaps we’ll try a different restaurant. We went to the main one–the pub. The high tea was indeed lots of food and unlimited tea. The bill also included two expensive lattes, tax and an 18% tip. Expensive but not outrageous.

      1. Midwest Mark Avatar

We used to visit several McMenamin’s. Edgefield, the Bagdad Theater, Forest Grove…each one was unique. I still make Bloody Marys using their recipe.

      2. Margaret Avatar

John and I have been to one in Seattle/Queen Anne (not much of one) and another in Centralia that had the best mac and cheese I’ve ever tasted. Unfortunately for John and me (beer drinkers), the McMenamins tend to add a lot of extra flavors like fruit to their beers. We’re not fans of that.

Your high tea looks fabulous and makes a very nice valentines day celebration. Brilliant idea.
Good news on the fridge. Older appliances were better quality and if you can replace a part or two and keep it going, that’s great.
Your OD seems excited about the prospect of a new job, and she’s determined to make it work. If it comes to fruition, it will be an adventure for everyone. You are right, J needs to keep his anti-this-or-those thoughts to himself. It is not his call.
Ian looks like a very happy baby. His smiles are delightful.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It made me want to go back again, in spite of the high prices. It’s also about the experience. It’s bizarre that the fridge is working again; I can’t figure out how or why. Although I think the negatives of the job would outweigh the positives (especially short term), it’s not my call. Nor John’s. Ian is so sweet. I love babies!

  14. J Avatar

I just read your last post, now this one. I’m glad your fridge is working, and I hope the new thermostat is the key to keeping it working! We once had someone here to repair our fridge (not an old one) and he said the problem is that you can get a fancy fridge with tons of bells and whistles, and spend a ton of money, but the guts are all the same and they’re all cheap. So you can’t just spend more and think it will last. FRUSTRATING. I say, keep that 30 year old fridge going as long as you can!

Wow, that tea looks fabulous. I’ve had high tea a few times, it’s such a lovely meal, though I always eat more than I intend to.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I will do the High Tea again and explore some tea. I tried other people’s and liked it better than I expected. A technician who worked on my mom’s dishwasher said the same thing: expensive appliances don’t mean quality, just more bells and whistles. And electronics!

  15. JT Twissel Avatar

Although it’s tempting I never make a negative comment about anything my step children decide to do! (unless illegal, immoral or self-harming!) This situations are complicated enough – hope the little one starts sleeping through the night!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Families are very complicated. John and I aren’t married, so we don’t have stepchildren, but the issues and boundaries are similar.

  16. Anne Bennett Avatar

I’ve only just stepped inside the shop kitty-corner to the Post Office once. I didn’t even realize they served high tea. Now I’ll have to check that out.

    1. Margaret Avatar

They didn’t use to have high tea but now there’s a lovely coffee/tea shop in there! It was delicious.

  17. Steve Avatar

I’ve never been happy with high tea, every time I’ve had it. I wind up feeling full of liquid and sugar. Not my thing.

I suppose there’s some value in the fact that John is trying to communicate honestly and openly to you about your daughters’ (and hence your) life. I can understand how you wouldn’t want to hear them criticized, but maybe he means to engage with your own concerns about them.

    1. Margaret Avatar

This high tea had a lot of savory bites, and I chose between the sweet ones so I didn’t feel overloaded. I remind myself that in so many ways John is a kind and thoughtful person–but not always the most perceptive or sensitive.

  18. Pam Avatar

One should always keep one’s mouth shut about other people’s children – except to admire them. Easy in theory…!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Indeed! I manage to do it about John’s children, so I would like him to do it with mine.

  19. kayak woman Avatar

If I had thought about it, I could’ve asked the GG to make a card for you. He LOVES to do that. I do not. Of course, he is not in tune with your sense of humor. A couple years ago he gave me one with an image (from the internet, cartoon style) of a cow with prrotuding udders. Okaaaay? (Hope this isn’t TMI). The tea looks beautiful. I more favor savory than sweet but I might have tried one of those fancy sweet ones.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I didn’t much understand Patt’s sense of humor either. He always preferred humorous cards. I didn’t always find them funny!

In Chicago, my wife and I have visited a handful of times a place called “The Russian Tea Room” that provides a very similar “High Tea” experience like you and your daughters shared. We love it when we are able to be in Chicago. It feels very special and romantic for us.

I enjoyed all the savories and forgot to mention the amazing scone with clotted cream and strawberry/raspberry jam. Everything was so pretty and delicious. The ambiance was lovely. I ate way too much! You’re right though–it is a special occasion since it’s not cheap! (but the experience was worth it)
