A View Into My Universe

There’s something about the cycle of flowers and plants that makes me alternately happy and melancholy. First, I start anticipating my tulips in January when I spot the shoots coming out of the ground. Later, they sprout leaves and the stem grows, culminating in a sometimes stubborn bud. All too quickly, the tulips open wide yet, not liking the sunshine or warmth, they lose their petals, one by one. In order to allow the bulb to gain strength, you need to let the foliage die down which is very unsightly. The price we pay for beauty?

I was impressed by the sunlight on these, even though they’re cold weather flowers.

This is as good as it’s going to get!

I wonder how many other tulips have decorative leaves. I’ll have to shop around!

I’ve never had any luck with parrot tulips and got a huge surprise when I spotted this beauty in my flower bed. 2014 was the last time that one has come up. Isn’t it incredible? On the nostalgic side, as I drove by my former family home, I thought about the rhododendron by the front porch blooming and could hear my mom’s voice, “Mike and MaryAnn (close friends) got that for your dad when his mom died.” The pink azaleas by the driveway were a gift from me for Mother’s Day when I was at university. My older daughter used the fall blooming blue and purple hydrangeas for her wedding bouquet; I’ve also taken many bunches of them to the cemetery. I could go on. I’m reminded that when I talk about that house, it’s also the story of my family and of me. Even the plants have their own history.

I had to share this last photo of Sharky at the Fair. He spotted these plastic balls with kids playing around in the water inside them and was eager to try it out. I secretly rolled my eyes. What will entrepreneurs think of next to cost fairgoers money? What kind of dumb idea is this? But Sharky loved it and had such a marvelous time, smiling and laughing constantly. I was wrong…again.

Speaking of Sharky, John and received a very cute invitation to his 6th birthday party. The snake and exotic bug show is scheduled earlier for those who want to see the critters; others can come later for pizza and cake. As is traditional with Sharky: No gifts–although drawings and notes are gratefully accepted. No singing of the birthday song which embarrasses him. Chocolate ice cream cake for dessert–his favorite! Note: Although I’m willing to hold a snake, there is NO WAY I’m willing to touch an exotic bug or have one on me. *shiver*

After too much talking about the Early Bird Wild Halibut three course dinner at several local restaurants, John and I finally took action. On a 75 degree day, we showed up at Anthony’s for one of the most delicious dinners EVER. I expected to be disappointed; instead, I savored every bite.

This is the face of a VERY happy man! 🙂

I think the same thing of flowers. I love them so much, but they are gone so soon. Then I realize that their short visits are why we treasure them. The same can be said of people we love. I have so many questions about the bubble ride. Did Sharky get wet? (I’m guessing no.) How do they seal the ball? Is the ride short enough that lack of oxygen is not a problem? I’m glad he enjoyed it – it does look fun and unique. The halibut dinners look scrumptious!

That’s very true. Blooming flowers are transitory and that’s part of their beauty and mystique. Sharky got a little wet–a few spots on his rear end. I didn’t keep track of how long the ride lasted, but it was probably under 10 minutes. Seemed a lot longer for those of us watching. Wild caught Alaskan halibut, prepared with fancy sauces and sides is such a treat (but expensive) and then to get a lovely Caesar salad and a dessert too–wow!

We’ve had such odd weather this year that the flowers are not doing well. Sadly.

    1. Margaret Avatar

That’s a shame! Do you plant annuals? Maybe they’ll do better? Once my tulips have died down, I’ll buy lots of petunias, geraniums and whatever other flowers catch my eye. I’m very random about my flower planting!

Beautiful flowers! That ride that Sharky is on looks pretty fun to me (at least my younger self would’ve enjoyed it).
Lovely dinner. It’s hard to go wrong at Anthony’s.

John and kept talking and talking about getting that halibut dinner and realized that April is running out! $39 for a fancy wild Alaskan halibut dinner with salad and dessert is an incredible price. It’s an early bird so you have to get there by 5:30. The fish was perfectly prepared.

Your flower pics are so stunning they’re trying to pop off my tablet screen! They make me very thankful for my vision. :^) Personally I thought Sharky’s giant bubble ride looked like a lot of fun and I love how that invite is addressed :^) And so nice to see that pic of John enjoying his dinner–it sounded wonderful!

    1. Margaret Avatar

The light on the tulips through their petals is stunning, I think. Thanks, Doug, I’m not a good or creative photographer so you make me feel better. The dinner and eating outside next to the water in April were amazing; we had views of Mount Baker and Mount Rainier and could watch the Vashon Island ferry Chetzemoka come and go!

Actually when I was first glancing through your photos ahead of reading…. I saw Sharky in the giant beach ball and thought that it looked so incredibly fun! Then I read you were surprised that it was popular. To me, it sounds like amazing fun and I hope eventually they make adult sized ones! :). It also reminded me of my favorite science fiction program (yes, even more than ST: Original Recipe…… that ball reminded me of “The Prisoner”. By chance have you ever seen the show? It starred Patrick McGoohan and only had ~20 episodes total, so if you can find it, you could binge watch. It was very influential to me as a kid and fostered a lot of my fondness for real science fiction (not fantasy (shudder)).

John does indeed look happy! I am glad both of you were able to go. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Hah! Even though I am a biologist….. insects are NOT my forte. I feel rather squeamish around most of them. (other than fruit flies 🙂 ). The snakes, though could be a lot of fun!

Ugh…. So many autocorrects (incorrectly) in my prior comment. Hopefully you can persevere through them and still get the gist of my comment. Sorry that I did not catch the numerous autoINcorrects.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I did correct what I saw–hope that helps! Autocorrect is not our friend much of the time!

The tulips in your garden seem to be at peak bloom. They are beautiful.
Sharky has a spirit for adventure and seems to like trying new and different things. That’s a very nice characteristic.
The snakes and insects themed B-day party is a first for me. I’m glad Sharky is having the party of his choice. It will be fun to see how the kids react to exotic snakes and insects.
Halibut is wonderful. Whenever Whole Foods has it at the fresh fish counter, I buy. It is pricey but delicious. Your restaurant meal sounds to perfection.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Sharky used to be very shy and timid but has gotten much more comfortable and, if not daring, at least willing to try new things. (most of the time) There’s apparently a traveling snake, reptile and bug guy who will bring his entourage to birthday parties, for a price. I think his company also presents a program at libraries because I remember taking my youngsters to a reptile and also a big bird show. The fish and the rest of the dinner was delicious; I can’t believe we were sitting on the deck when it’s not even summer. 🙂

I just love it when a restaurant meal is just so good. I’ve had a few meals I have really enjoyed lately, all seafood based.
The water ball looks like fun!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Fish is tricky; this was perfectly cooked and the sauces were delicious. I will say that the dessert was good but not as outstanding as the rest of the meal.

The everlasting foliage is one thing about tulips. Daff plants don’t hang around as long.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Don’t I know it! There’s a lot of foliage too. I don’t mind except that it looks ugly and impedes my planting of my annuals.

I think most fair adventurers are only fair to middling! lol but that play in a bubble looks like a wonderful ride. If it’d hold an old, fat lady, I’d have paid to try it! Looks so neat.

Yes, I’m glad you know to let the foliage die it’s own death. The foliage feeds the bulbs in the ground. What year did you plant this tulip bed?

That meal looks so delicious. What a special treat for you and John. I love the invitation. Erin has Ada write her own thank you notes and address the envelopes. She’s learned so much doing it. Saying thank you is a simple gesture. We all should remember to say thank you more often.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I was shocked at how much Sharky loved rolling around in that bubble. I think the rules said that the bubble person needed to be under 440 pounds. However, I can’t imagine an adult inside one; I would be claustrophobic. Yes, as impatient as I am to get the tulips cut back and the annuals in, I wait until the foliage dies down. It’s so unsightly though! Most of that bed was planted in 2014. There are a few new bunches that I planted last October; they were gifts when my mom died. Thank yous are very important; I still send them if someone has done something nice. We used to call them “bread and butter notes.”

I had a rose down in CA that was a lovely pink shading down to yellow that positively glowed in the sun. I must have tried hundreds of times to capture a photo of it, and never got one that did it justice. (There may be for life lurking in there somewhere, but I have not the talent to draw it out 😊).

My brother used to call those unhelpful (in)corrections “autocowrecks”.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Autocowrecks is a perfect term! My problem is that it will sometimes happen right after I’ve pressed send on a text. Too late to change it back! To get the sun glowing through the leaves I often have to crouch down. Not easy on the knees!

That dinner does look great! Those big plastic balls remind me of the plastic spheres we used to put our gerbils in so they could roll around the house.

Your tulips look great. One of mine has already shriveled away without blooming. I replanted it this spring and I wonder if it has died. I think if it were alive it would still have leaves. 🙁

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s odd which tulips come back, and which don’t. It varies from year to year. I had an older bunch of them come up but then the foliage got nibbled (a bunny?) and the usual 3-4 tulips were gone, although the leaves are still there. It was such an excellent dinner and experience. I love sitting by the water and watching kayaks and other boats while admiring the mountains. A bald eagle flew over our heads too!

I wish someone would invite me to a snake and bug party. Clearly my friends are boring. Of course I could always have one and invite them!

I’m quite excited about it! John, who sometimes criticizes my older daughter for being over the top for parties, cakes, and creative endeavors, made a judgmental remark and I quashed it. Just because his family is very low-key for special occasions doesn’t mean that other people can’t have fun and different parties. It’s what Sharky wanted and they have the money for it; if they didn’t, they would’ve told him no. John’s seven-year-old granddaughter is autistic and doesn’t have any friends so her parties are just family. Much as I like John, I do have an issue with him criticizing my kids when I never do so with his family, although I could.

I ment to also mention that not only is that parrot tulip absolutely beautiful (I never saw one before)…. but your photograph of it is quite striking as well!

I originally came back to see the beach balls again. It does seem like a really fun kind of experience to sit INSIDE a floating beach ball. I am not really sure why it intrigues me. I guess it seems
simultaneously fun and exciting….. it also tranquil as well.

When I originally planted the tulips in 2013 or 2014, I had a whole bunch of parrot tulips, but they didn’t come back the next year. Digging them up every year and replanting them in my rocky ground is a non-starter. I was delighted to see this one! it’s not from that long ago, but it is probably from a couple years back. They did say that people up to 440 pounds could go in them, but I didn’t see any adults and I would’ve felt weird in one. I don’t like being closed up like that in the water, even though there wasn’t that much water.

  15. Linda Avatar

Beautiful photos, Margaret! The food looks really good! I love fish…and asparagus! I love the water and enjoy being in it or around it and watching others enjoy it as well!

    1. Margaret Avatar

The fish and the asparagus were perfectly cooked! I was impressed. Being around the water is easy here but the weather isn’t always conducive to it. 😂

Back when I worked at Cubelandia, it was situated in a nature area and I felt similarly about the life cycle of the Canada Goose, of which we had multiple flocks.

I love those big balls but I also wonder how much air they have?

    1. Margaret Avatar

Are their life cycles short? I know so little about them. I’m sure they wouldn’t let people stay in them for a long time. Hopefully not!

  17. Pixie Avatar

My first flowers are up, my crocuses and they are so tiny you could easily miss them. Your tulips are lovely.
Sharky doesn’t like gifts? Makes things easier. I love the photo of Sharky in the ball on the water. We had something similar here and Jack loved it. I would have loved to have gone in it as well, but I’m getting too old for somethings:)
Sounds like you and John had a lovely meal.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Crocuses are very small! I wish they were bigger and lasted longer. Sharky doesn’t really need anything or want anything except the reptiles and bugs, pizza and cake. And lots of playing with friends. I would hate being enclosed in that ball and would probably get seasick. LOL John and I had such a great meal and the setting was perfect.

  18. Tonya Avatar

Those “water balls” really intrigue me! I think I would have loved that as a kid, or even into adulthood! Not sure how they work, or if there are “air holes,” but I find them fascinating!

The halibut dinner looks incredible! I’m trying to think of a good reason/excuse for John and I to hit Anthony’s in Olympia before the end of the month. I LOVE halibut, and don’t have it very often. Mmmmm!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Sharky adored it although I think being zipped up inside that ball would have made me claustrophobic. The rules said up to 440 pounds, but I didn’t see any adults doing them. 🙂 It was such a wonderful dinner, not just the food but the setting. A bald eagle flew over our heads too! John’s halibut had a lemon beurre blanc and was served over mashed potatoes whereas mine had a hazelnut citrus butter and was over rice. It had a rhubarb salsa on the side–a little sweet for me but tasty.
