A View Into My Universe

Many of you know that I was reared an Episcopalian; I still carry vestiges of that training. I enjoy ceremony, some religious music, impressive churches and cathedrals and spirituality. Although no longer a church goer, I am all about good works and trying to be a decent person. To that end, I intend to buy Tod Maffin’s tee-shirt when it becomes available; its message is, “Relentless Decency. ” Isn’t that an excellent mantra, especially for today’s world?

When Older Daughter invited me along to pick out a rose for her, I was immediately attracted to the Chihuly because of its variety of colors. However, I didn’t realize that its blooms would appear lit from within! Part of the reason why I began this post with my religious background is that upon seeing this photo, I thought of Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is heaven.” It seems like too many have gone away from good works and instead profess to be Christian without any evidence of kindness, empathy or decency. But I digress…

Sharky looked great in his soccer gear but is a timid player who didn’t want to get kicked or knocked down. So, he ran around happily and somewhat engaged but never very near the ball. 🙂 I didn’t blame him at all; soccer looked rougher than I imagined with a few scrums and kids rolling on the ground. There was also some drama on his team with one player saying something critical to another, both boys sobbing, the female coach (one of the player’s moms) getting involved, the male coach (the female coach’s husband) also telling his son, “He did exactly what he was supposed to do. Even if he hadn’t, we are supposed to build up our teammates.” Whoo boy, I would NOT want to be a coach! I still don’t understand soccer very well, but I sure did enjoy the people watching.

As for another type of football, John and I watched the Seahawks over at OD’s with Sharky and sometimes Obro. Sharky was very excited to tell us that Jaxon Smith-Njigba had already scored a touchdown by the time we got there. We had stopped at Starbucks for a breakfast sandwich and cake pops for the grandsons; we only arrived a few minutes after kickoff. JSN was quick! I’m much more relaxed when my team is blowing out the other one; I did have a sad moment of thinking about my late Arizona blog friend Bruce who would rant to me about the lousy play of the Cardinals–who have now lost to Seattle 10 times in a row. I sure do miss Bruce/Catalyst and his “Friday Funnies.”

As befits my older grandsons’ love of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Obro’s mom fashioned a shell for him. They both want the turtles as Halloween costumes and Obro would like a TMNT theme for his November birthday. Shades of the 1980s!

Today, I need to run a few errands and should take a walk; I’ve been busy AND lazy. I haven’t worked very hard at getting back into a routine after Ireland. Book Club is coming up Wednesday (I’m hosting) and John and I are planning to visit the State Fair Thursday (a predicted rainy day). When John asked about parking, I told him emphatically that I will never pay for parking (or entrance to the fair) and that he’ll have to wear his most comfortable shoes.

Because I’ve been “Doing the Puyallup” for nearly all of my 70 years, I have some rather strong opinions about the event. 🙂

That’s a beautiful rose, but why were you picking one out for OD? As for religion, I was raised Methodist but I always liked the Episcopalian Church, they always seemed so progressive and forgiving–the Catholics could learn a thing or two from them! Sharky sure looked handsome in his soccer uniform, he is growing up fast. Now what is “Doing the pullyaup”? :^)

I was only helping her choose a rose; she thinks I’m a plant whisperer, even though I told her I know little about roses. (except they can be a lot of work) The Episcopal parish where I attended was progressive and both my parents are too, so it was a great fit. I’m not a fan of Sharky’s haircut but he likes it; that’s what’s important. I added a link on my post for “Do the Puyallup!” It’s an annoying jingle but famous around here where most of us still call it THE PUYALLUP FAIR!

I was the 12 and under soccer registrar for our small town one year and boy-o-boy, some parents didn’t get the concept of sportsmanship at all! I think is decency is a subjective word but kindness … always … kindness please. Have fun at the fair. I used to love going to our county fair but with traffic these days it’s over an hour away!

There are already a couple “stars” on the team, and their parents are quite vocal and specific about what they need to be doing on the field. For Sharky, it’s more like WATCH THE BALL. He enjoyed fraternizing with another kid on the opposing team who goes to his school.

I assume “doing the Puyallup” means going to the Washington State Fair. I never did make it up there, nor to the Oregon State Fair, so it’s kinda funny that I never miss the Wisconsin State Fair!

I put in a link to explain “Do the Puyallup.” It’s obnoxious (but famous around here) so prepare yourself! And it’s the PUYALLUP FAIR, Mark! 🙂

The fair sounds like great fun! Is this the event that teachers used to get free admission to that you mentioned sometime ago?

Soccer can be intense….. I understand Sharky’s hesitation.

Yes, it’s in my community so the schools get a half-day off (so do the teachers); I’m usually able to procure free tickets although it’s become more and more difficult. John and I don’t eat at the fair except possibly a scone (about $3 apiece) and otherwise only do free stuff like look at the animals, art, photography, flowers, exhibits and other displays.

I like Tod Maffin. I didn’t realize he was from Nanaimo. I was just listening to a show about the inititative that he helped start to lure unhappy American health care workers to Nanaimo.

John calls him his emotional support Canadian! (or maybe he calls himself that?) I really want the tee-shirt, but it’s sold out at the moment. A good sign!
