STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

I finished my hectic week at a Happy Hour in a bar that used to be grungy (a real dive) and has now been refurbished (some might say gentrified)–with prices to match. The young one in the middle taught next to me for the last 10 years or so of my career; she’s spunky, open and sometimes full of drama. If I want school gossip, I turn to her for info! I’ve known my other friend since our daughters were friends in elementary school; our “kids” just turned 40 this summer, so that tells you how long we’ve been hanging out and sharing the ups and downs of (grand) parenting, relationships, health and work. Since she’s newly retired, we’ve been focusing on that adjustment; it’s not as easy as many people assume. There are financial worries, scary medical insurance premiums and the dilemma of establishing a workable and satisfying routine when you’re suddenly without any sort of schedule. Since it was Blue Friday, I wore my Seahawks jersey which was nearly decorated with my Happy Hour appetizer. Asian lettuce wraps–how does one eat them without dumping them all over the table, seat, lap, shirt, etc.? I hope no one was filming my efforts because it was like a comedy show.

Before the Happy Hour, I found time to mow the front lawn and water my plants. We need RAIN! (ask me how I feel about that in November) My coleuses are still doing well although I’ve pulled most of my anemic petunias. They seem to get tired of blooming.

I love the leaves on this one!

I don’t generally buy this color, but I’m delighted with all the blooms on this zinnia (?). It’s always interesting to see which of my annuals flourish and which don’t. My lantana hasn’t done as well this year, a real disappointment since it’s one of my favorite flowers.

Today I’m heading to Owen Beach with Younger Daughter and her two. Unfortunately, the tide will be high, so there won’t be as much beach for Anders to play on.

Doesn’t he have the sweetest smile?

As for my evening entertainment, John has been busy with fishing (no fish yet though) and I’ve been catching up on some shows. “Ted Lasso” Season 4 has been a real disappointment; I loved the end of Season 3 and feel like they should have left the series there. Instead, they’ve created a mish mash of characters, some of them very unlikeable, killed off one of my favorite people in the show and diluted the humor and wisdom of the first three seasons. I have enjoyed the new season of “Silo” although I’d forgotten that in the books and the series, many of the people aren’t just good or bad but a mix of the two. Some characters that I despised have done positive things and others that I’ve rooted for have turned evil. As for my beloved “Star Trek,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” hasn’t discovered fascinating new worlds but instead has fallen back on strange new gimmicks. Thankfully, I have “Whistler” to read and Ann Cleeves’ new Matthew Venn mystery novel. Of her book series (“Shetland” and “Vera”), the Venn novels are possibly the weakest although I enjoy them a lot. It’s refreshing to find a quiet and introspective detective; he’s not tough and macho like many American ones or a train wreck like the Scandinavian or some Scottish characters. Instead, he’s a gay man trying to survive and thrive in a sometimes unfriendly police force.

Now my Apple Watch is lecturing me “Time to Stand!” which is a nice way to tell me to get off my you-know-what! šŸ™‚

Sounds like a fun weekend. I hope you get some rain soon, but not too much. I’ve never heard of blue Friday, but I assume it has to do with the football team. I’m also enjoying the last flush of flowers before a frost takes them all.

The coleus will go first, but the geraniums are hardy, and will probably hang on a bit longer. I’m ready to put in my cyclamen! And yes, Seahawks gear on Fridays. You can see from my jersey that blue is the predominant color.

Oh, those coleus plants are the bomb. I really would love the pinky red ones. I’m going to try to find one next year.

Over 40 years of teaching I had lots of comrades. Kay is the only one I see often. I’m not unfriendly with the rest but our visits aren’t coordinated. I admire your effort.

Glad you got your yard mowed. Start your watch and count it for walking.

Your pretty orange leafed vine post before this was a Virginia Creeper. It has 5 leaves. Amazing to see it in Washington.

    A trip with YD—great. I hope it’s a special for those boys.

Every year I get at least three coleus plants. I can’t resist their variety and colors! It’s been difficult to go out on a scheduled walk with all the various activities this week. I’m hoping next week will be better for that. Owen Beach is only about 35 minutes away. I live close to the water!

Margaret, that’s such a nice photo at the top of you and your friends, enjoyed the backstories… you have an impressive network. Enjoyed seeing your colorful plants as well, and Anders is an adorable little fella. With great hair! I had to stop myself from typing a 10,000 word essay on Strange New Worlds. I’ve never seen so much wasted potential. I wish so much you’d give Voyager a chance. I’ve rewatched those episodes more than any other Trek series.

Thanks, Doug! Anders needs a haircut but I’m not sure he would permit one. I think I’ve seen a few episodes of Voyager. At the time, I couldn’t get into it. Now might be a different story!

I think I have read all of the Cleeve books unless maybe there is a new Venn novel.

Flowers are still hanging on here, but we cleaned up the backyard yesterday, trying to beat the cold weather and getting something done before we move onto the bigger job out front. We should have a week or two, I think.

There is a new Venn. I like it so far. We’re having second summer right now. 72 degrees and sun. I suspect it will change fast. Best to be prepared like you are!

That is a great photo of you and your friends.
Your coleus plants did extremely well, and they add lots of great color to the garden. They like the shade and my front door faces North, so I always have at least one large coleus plant. When coleus are happy, they thrive and usually double in size.
A beach day with Anders and your daughter sounds like fun. Anders looks happy and healthy. Your daughter has a great smile too. That’s a lovely mother and son photo.

Thank you! I love going out with my friends and catching up. Coleus do love the sun, but the minute it gets close to freezing, they will not just die, but shrivel into nothing. That daughter, after having the most beautiful complexion ever, now has rosacea which she doesn’t treat in the way that I would recommend. 🫤

He does have a nice, kind smile. Love your plants. Hope you had fun at the beach

Thank you so much! We were happy to get together. With our schedules, especially the younger one’s, it’s a rare and special event.

Sometimes the right company is the perfect time for extra messy food as it enhances the comraderie and humour…sigh I miss my favorite teacher colleagues.

If lettuce is supposed to wrap around ingredients and keep them in, it does NOT. They were delicious though. I miss many of my colleagues–not all though. I have a monthly Ram Ladies lunch with my closest friends from the World Language Department and several other dear colleagues and friends are in my Book Club.

I wish we could mail rain. One of my trees collapsed last night after five inches of rain last week. I suspect it was uprooted since it looked quite healthy lying completely across the street blocking traffic. The city crew was working on it all day so I will have to go down tomorrow to see why it fell for sure.

    1. Margaret Avatar

That’s frightening when trees come loose. We have that happen here too. šŸ™ The ground gets saturated and the tree roots come loose. Hope it was an anomaly.

I really like the Venn series. For me, they stand up to re-reading (actually, re-listening for me these days) better than her Vera or Shetland books. Which could be simply a result of my aging—I’m finding it harder and harder to find new books that I like, so re-reading old stuff represents an increasing percentage of my reading time. Which might be good for a book club discussion if I were actually in one!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I really like them too although my point was that if people were expecting Vera or Jimmy Perez, Matthew Venn is a completely different type of detective. So far, I’m not re-reading but I do occasionally pick up a book to read a part of it I treasure, usually the ending.

    What is Blue Friday?

It’s annoying when series go on too long and lose the plot, or when they bring one back and either ruin the characters and setup or just make the finale of the first version retrospectively invalid or depressing.

I wouldn’t like my devices lecturing me!
