A View Into My Universe

Holiday Transitions

If I were to write down what I contributed to the Thanksgiving feast, it would pale in comparison to everything Older Daughter and John did. Yet I got my house ready, found places for coats, organized seats for 19 people, tried to make refrigerator space and room on the counters, greeted people, located various items for OD, fed a newborn, chased toddlers, entertained OD’s father-in-law, and I could go on and on. Was hosting something that I would want to do again? Absolutely not. Yet I was truly grateful that we could all get together and have a delicious meal; everyone got along well, and my house looked festive. Of course, I kept thinking about Mom and how much she would have LOVED the conversations and the laughter; even the little boys dashing around wouldn’t have bothered her. She would’ve been proud that her family was sitting in her living room chairs and eating at her dining room table, complete with both leaves. Note: Putting them in is no picnic and is a two-person job!

This photo doesn’t include the kitchen table and high chair for Anders. It was definitely cozy but didn’t seem crowded since the family room and entry way were clear. However, it was a LOT of “peopling,” following a breakfast at John’s younger daughter’s place with a different set of relatives. I’m a schmoozer, but John was exhausted by the end of the day. It didn’t help that he was getting a cold and was also dealing with his sister, back in the hospital with lower lobe pneumonia. She’s definitely become a frequent flier. 🙁

OD’s in-laws were visiting from Iowa; it was so delightful to see them. Lynn (at the end) is one of the nicest people on the planet; her husband Ron (next to John) is quite a character. My SIL is the woman in orange, and you all know John (with much needed beer) and sweet Obro!

Older Daughter promised me she wouldn’t go overboard and then made a surprise salad, when I had already signed up for that, insisted on making this turkey charcuterie board and brought a pumpkin cheesecake to go along with our multitude of other desserts. She just can’t help herself. 😬

See what I mean? I decided on a thin sliver of pecan with whipped cream and a hunk of Dutch apple pie with vanilla ice cream. There were too many choices!

I tried for a photo of three of my grandsons and this is what I got. Anders is trying to escape, Sharky is smiling and Obro is picking his nose. Sigh.

And after that photo failure, they decided to “swim” across my hardwood entry. LOL You just have to laugh, right?

My daughters wanted to surprise me with pictures with their sons; every photo was uniquely strange with one or more of the kids doing something unusual. Perhaps that’s the magic of family photos?

As for Ian, look at his adorably tiny baby foot! Several of us fought over holding him; the clear winners were my sister-in-law and brother. I would have been more in the running, but the host can’t just sit around snuggling a cute infant. Wahhh!

And Mari? Before I closed her up in her Cat Condo (which she thinks of as Cat Jail), she wasn’t enjoying the holiday.

We had a laugh over my sister-in-law and son-in-law twinning.

My baby brother and sister-in-law’s house remodel should be finished sometime next month, although probably not for Christmas. So, yes, I’ll be hosting again, but for Xmas Eve with fewer people and a much simpler menu. I can’t imagine having no kitchen for months like they’ve dealt with; I may not be much of a cook, but I couldn’t stand that!

Today I moved on to the next holiday, after raking, taking a walk and doing some cleaning. I’ve finished all my minimalist decorations except the tree…which I may be doing on my own due to John’s cold. The past few years he’s spoiled me by helping me transport it, put it in the stand, string the lights and arrange the train around the bottom.

I need to remind myself that for a long time before John I managed the tree by myself, although not well and not without tears and swearing. Unlike many people, I’m not into Xmas trees and wouldn’t mind not having one. However, I would hate to disappoint my Littles.

That’s my excuse anyway!

    And everybody was smiling!

Yes, there were many smiles! None of the little boys had napped so things got pretty crazy later in the evening. Eek!

Looks like it was a successful day! Too funny with the matching shirts. I love that they are swimming on your smooth floor. Kids have such great imaginations.

I think it mostly went well; I didn’t hear any complaints. The 3 boys got a bit wild, chasing each around my living room-entry-family room-kitchen-dining room “track.” Normally that’s OK but there were many people and chair obstacles. No harm done though. I loved the “swimming” too! Anders started it and his cousins joined right in.

What a festive Thanksgiving you had! It’s so nice to get together and be grateful with family and/or friends. Just think of the wonderful memories your grandsons will have – a true gift.

As morbid as it might sound, I want to live long enough to make memories with them that they’ll remember. My maternal grandmother (who adored me according to my mom) died when I was 4 and I don’t remember her at all. My mom was sad about that and I am too.

That is a very big gathering that I don’t know if I could deal with, but I guess back in the day, Sue’s family was a pretty big gathering, and I survived. Anyway, good on ya, and I hope the tree goes well.

20 was a bigger number than I’m comfortable with although I deal OK with 10 or under. I loved being with the people there and it was a limited amount of time, so it didn’t get too stressful. Mari and I are back to our normal quiet routines!

I’m not into trees 🌲 either.

Glad you pulled this off. Everyone having a seat would be a great accomplishment. 👏👏

Trees hold some not-so-pleasant memories for me. My late husband told me he had cancer while putting up the tree in 2010. I’m horrible at getting it in the stand and putting the lights on it. Ugh. Everyone had a seat, but a couple wandered. My brother sat in the recliner, probably due to his back issues.

I love seeing all the photos. It looks like everyone had a wonderful time. Having a big crowd is a lot. Having all the children there is a lot too, lol. I miss big family gatherings, but I sure don’t miss hosting them! Your daughter’s turkey charcuterie turned out beautifully. I didn’t make mine since my kids didn’t come over on Thanksgiving. We are getting together again on Sunday, but now the turkuterie is rather pointless. On to Christmas we go!

I think there’s a fine line between 10-20 people. 10 is a great number but for me, 20 is too many. Everyone ate well and had a good time; I have plenty of space and 3 bathrooms, so my house is unfortunately perfect for large gatherings. We had 6 people at Thanksgiving who won’t be at Xmas Eve, so it’ll be a smaller group. OD said that the turkey charcuterie had been through it because the pear was already brown, but that made it funnier. I love how easy WordPress makes it to insert photos. It was very hard in Typepad.

You survived! Everybody got fed and had a good visit, that’s what it’s supposed to be about, right?
I don’t host big meals like that anymore, but I do remember how stressful they were.
I’m in the middle of sewing a quilt together, but when that’s done, I’ll get our tree up. It’s easy to put up but Jack will want to help, which makes it harder to put up.
Have a good rest this weekend.

Having kids help with decorating is no help at all, but they do enjoy it! It was fabulous to have everyone together and I survived, as did my house. I’m still looking for a few things that got stashed away by John or Older Daughter. I hope to never (or rarely) host again at my house although I will if needed.

Now THIS is a Thanksgiving post! Margaret you’re too modest–I can’t imagine hosting this many people, the pictures are wonderful. Loved those foodie pics of the salad and charcuterie and wow the desserts. It was nice seeing your brother (and your daughters and grandkids of course) and I hope Mari survived this! Really, this was a great post :^)

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, Doug! I did a lot behind the scenes–not sure anyone was very aware of it. Older Daughter did the majority of cooking with John’s help. I kept OD’s father-in-law out of the way which was a job in itself! LOL

Your Thanksgiving will be one to remember with great fondness. Your holiday gathering looks fabulous showing lots of happy adults and children as well as a festive meal followed by many desert choices.
You hosted a wonderful Thanksgiving. Well done, Margaret.
As for sweet Mari, she might need some extra one-on-one time, a little turkey and her favorite treat of foaming cream!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Although it was a lot of work, I will treasure the times with my family. I’ve had every variety of Thanksgiving: with my kids, with only one, with 0, with my parents, with only one parent, at my brother’s, big groups, small groups and even alone. So, this one was special with so many loved ones together!

    What a wonder, memory-filled day!

It was great and I enjoyed it, but I’m also relieved it’s over! 🙂 Hope your gathering went well and see you at Book Club!

Lovely! I so envy you having both daughters nearby. Sigh. But I’m happy for you.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was difficult when the daughters were away for the holidays or any time really, but it would be especially agonizing to be far from my grandsons. I feel very fortunate!

  12. JT Twissel Avatar

So happy it all went well! Looks like quite the assortment of pies!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Pumpkin, pecan, Dutch apple, lemon bars and a pumpkin cheesecake. 😳

OK, I’m exhausted just imagining it. But thank you for letting us share your day and your grandsons!

During the event, we mostly ran on adrenaline, but then when it was over, John and I were exhausted, especially after clean up. My house is back to normal though which is comforting. It was a thrill to see the cousins interacting. Anders is getting old enough to do that now.

That picture with Obro picking his nose is priceless. I laughed out loud. I guess it’s natural for every photo to be quirky and different when you have four small children involved.

And poor Mari, hiding out! Hope she has recovered. (And you, too!)

    1. Margaret Avatar

I never delete photos like that because they are very memorable! 😂 I did want a posed shot with all four grandsons and me but that didn’t happen. I’ll be happy with what I got. Mari is happy these days with no one around but me.

Hi Margaret, I am glad everything went so well for you! Wow, twenty people, that’s a lot! The photos of the grandkids are great. Take care.❤️

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was a lot and I feel like I’m still recovering, not so much physically, but from the activity and low-key stress of it.

  16. Midwest Mark Avatar

Yay! You survived! And ended up with quite the dessert choice. I wouldn’t even know where to begin (though probably the pumpkin cheesecake).

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m still a little tired, believe it or not! It went well but was a lot to deal with–lots of small tasks and decisions. The pumpkin cheesecake wasn’t set, so my daughter didn’t recommend having any. I would have tried some otherwise!

  17. Tonya Avatar

[Eeep, my post was denied! I don’t know why. Will try again].

So glad everything went well for you! I’m sure there were some child meltdowns and whatnot, but that’s part of it, right? It is a lot of work, even without doing the traditional turkey dinner and with only 6 people. Took me a while to recover! I love your daughter’s charcuterie! She is so artistic.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’ve never heard of a post being denied! There was some child wildness and dislike of some of the traditional foods like the turkey, but it generally went smoothly. John and I are still tired and he now has a cold. It’s a lot of work, no matter how many people are there!

Six years ago, a three month kitchen remodel stretched out to nearly nine months long. I can attest it isn’t for the feint of heart.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I don’t think I’ll tell my brother that. I’m not surprised though. Unexpected snafus always occur in remodels/construction.
