STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

I’ve only been babysitting a little yet somehow this weekend has involved too much rushing around.

Anders adored his first gymnastics class; like his mother, he’s fearless on beam and uneven bars, even though male gymnasts don’t actually do those events. For right now though, the class is providing excellent exercise, training in balance, practice in following directions and work to strengthen the muscles and coordination. Younger Daughter was shocked that another little boy in Anders’ class with red hair in a mullet was called Jim Bob. That’s not a common name around here…

Many have inquired about my date yesterday to see “Project Hail Mary,” mostly to find out my opinion of the film. I loved it and thought it was a nearly perfect adaptation. (I’ll get to the nearly later) However, John grudgingly liked the movie with lukewarm praise for the acting, special effects and sciency stuff. He disliked the beginning. “But John, that’s how the book started too.” He was annoyed by the switching back and forth between the present and the past. “John, they have to give us the back story, especially for those who didn’t read the book.” And we had to find out what had happened to Grace in the book too–bit by bit as his memory came back. John much preferred the book to the movie whereas I was impressed by how well they could develop the characters, explain the plot and build a world and a friendship in a mere 2 1/2 hours. I also was transported by the music: the choral parts made me FEEL intensely and everyone here already knows that I’m a Beatles fan. However, John and I agreed that we weren’t sure about Ryan Gosling in the part; he did a fabulous job with it, but he’s so well-known that I couldn’t get past the curse of the “famous face.” That’s on me though.

Today was a family protest day. Honestly, I doubt that it will accomplish much but it was refreshing to be around so many like-minded people. I even ran into a couple former colleagues/friends!

Sharky insisted that he could hold this substantial sign that John made for a previous rally. It’s heavy!

Obro laughs at anything about “poop.” Naturally, this was the sign he chose.

The protest was crowded although not so much where we were. We had tambourines and noisemakers too!

When Anders arrived, the cousins started running around together, literally. We then moved to a large grassy area at Point Defiance Park and let them dash around, pick up sticks and pinecones, throw things in the pond, climb a tree, and admire the waterfowl. Little boys have LOTS of energy! Note: our group “chased away” a man in a hammock and an affectionate couple smooching on a blanket. Yay, us!

Since John was volunteering at the library today doing taxes, he wanted me to send him photos of my favorite signs. This was one that made me chuckle and wince at the same time.

I did mostly baby holding at Point Defiance Park and let my daughters chase the older boys around. Since Ian didn’t have a hat, OD fashioned this one out of a pair of Obro’s pants. It looked like a Senegalese headwrap!

You’ve all been anticipating this, right? My first tulip! Isn’t she a beauty?

Well done. I’m glad your grandsons and daughters all went to the rally with you. I hope it makes a difference too.

I have my fingers crossed that we can have elections without extra steps for those of us who changed our names, intimidation at the polls or mail slowdowns. I’m very distrustful and cynical. I’m hoping I’m wrong. Yet there have already been so many cases where I’ve heard “They can’t do that. That’s illegal. That’s against the Constitution.” And no consequences happen and they do whatever they want.

Wonderful to see your family protesting – like you say to be with like minded people is a powerful experience

I was in London at an anti right protest/ March – busy , but brilliant. My knees and feet need a rest now

Good for you! Knees and feet get a workout at these events. I admire your dedication to the cause in spite of painful knees!

It looks like you have a good day, and a big YES to that gorgeous tulip.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was a fine day, weather wise and otherwise!

I love the sign about Congress being alive to see this. This is the third major protest I think and I have seen nothing accomplished. Perhaps they set a date for the next protest? To me, these things seem only designed to further divide our country. When we teach our children that it is okay to call our leaders “turds” or tell them to “f” themselves as with previous Biden protests when we disagree with them, I suspect we are setting up for an even more divisive future with even less decorum than we have now.

    1. Margaret Avatar

There was nothing concrete accomplished except showing our strength and expressing our opinions about what’s happening. That’s not necessarily nothing but it’s not as much as I would like it to be. However, taking to the streets to riot with weapons isn’t the best idea either. I can’t think of any other administration that’s been more divisive and vindictive: toward other political parties, our allies, immigrants, even legal ones, and anyone who disagrees with them, including former members of their own administration. The word “turd” is a mild one for how I actually feel about them! I can’t agree with Michelle Obama that when they go low, we go high. It hasn’t worked at all. But we’ll have to agree to disagree about most of this, I suspect. Which is fine.

      1. Ed Avatar

I think we agree on everything but the need to ā€œgo lowā€ to accomplish showing displeasure.

    2. Margaret Avatar

I need to clarify that I don’t mean that we should go low, but we shouldn’t go high. We need to be firm and call them out, not be nicey-nice, too kind or understanding. It’s hard (impossible?) to go high with those who consider us “enemies of the state” and who break so many ethical and moral rules (and laws) without consequences. So perhaps I mean go middle? LOL

Haha! The look on Ian’s face says, “What the heck is this thing on my head?” SO CUTE

Ian loved all the people and hoopla at the protest and getting out on a sunny day. It was a great change of scenery for all of us!

Love the new tulip bloom. And the baby boy gets more beautiful with each picture share.

I am proud of you letting your voice be heard. I’m not being as I would like to be, but I don’t even know what I can do. I can vote but in my state I’m in the ā€œfewā€. I agree with your views and my daughters do also. I wish we’d make some progress but we seem to be moving in the wrong direction.

I’m not a fan of science fiction. Eric and ingrid were discussing the movie as they both love this genre.

Red headed Jim Bob might have hillbilly parents.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s not my most beautiful one (in my opinion) but the others will come. A couple of the bunches have leaves but no flowers coming out, and that’s disappointing. But there are definitely more than last year, so that’s a positive. I’m trying to be as involved as possible because I can’t not be. I would feel guilty if I didn’t express how I’m feeling about what’s going on. I’m glad your daughters agree with us; it’s hard to know with younger people.

My gosh Margaret, you have been busy! Darn it, so envious you got to see that movie with Ryan Gosling, I really want to see that. (It got very good reviews, btw.) And I am so embarrassed, had no idea these No Kings protests were happening and these kids with the posters look awesome! And I love Ian’s makeshift hat! He is too sweet! PS Anders–he is growing!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s been a good kind of busy, seeing family and doing things. I always feel energized by that. I really should be out mowing my lawn right now though! We all laughed at Ian’s hat; OD wore lots of headgear in Senegal so she’s creative with it. Actually, she’s creative in general!

Thanks for the movie review. I’ve tried multiple times to start the audible version of the book, and have sent it back every time—can’t get past the beginning. Maybe my attention span is decreasing in my old age, but it feels like it’s dragging on forever, and when I get to the point of snarling at my iPad ā€œjust get to the point already!ā€ I give up, so I’ve wondered what the story is actually about and why so many people love it, and now I understand better. Thank you!

    1. Margaret Avatar

John would agree with you although he did love the book. Perhaps when reading, you can fast forward through some of the “setting the scene” stuff whereas in a movie, you have to watch all of it as it’s presented.

  9. Steve Avatar

Thanks for the movie review. I think Dave would like it. I suggested going today but he didn’t feel like going out, so we’ll save it for another time.

Glad you and yours made it to the local rally! I love the Congress sign too. Very funny. (And sad!)

    1. Margaret Avatar

I was surprised that John, being a science-loving guy, didn’t enjoy it more. I look forward to your (and Dave’s) review of the film! Congress’ approval ratings must be in the toilet.

That sign about Congress certainly is right on. Protests made a difference during the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War so there is hope. Of course we had real humans as leaders then.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yeah, our leaders used to be real humans who cared about the well-being of the whole country and everyone in it–that was refreshing and unfortunately, in the past for now. šŸ™ Our government seems to be a self-enrichment group at the moment. I look at this as similar to when one of my younger brothers was brain dead; I went up to visit him, even though he (probably) didn’t know or care that I was there. However, other people did know and most importantly, I KNEW I was present, doing what I considered to be the right thing.

The weather was perfect for protesting. Voices are important. With so many wrongs there is a lot to protest about. I loved your signs. Also, the sign about Congress could not be more on point.
Your first tulip is awesome and a welcomed event. There should be many more blooms on the way.
The boys are looking great. Ian wearing his unique hat looks cozy, warm and adorable.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m not a fan of signs with bad words on them (the F word for example); it’s the retired schoolteacher in me. Turd isn’t a naughty word though and it’s very fitting! The boys did extremely well and asked many questions, especially Sharky. We explained the best we could why we were there, what our opinions were and that not everyone agreed with us. I’m realizing now that my tulips are later than normal! I would usually have a bunch blooming by now.

  12. J Avatar

Count me in as a fan of that sign about Congress, I may have to copy that one.

I’m glad you enjoyed the movie, I haven’t seen it nor read the book.

    1. Margaret Avatar

That sign really hit me. I don’t know that I’ve ever been as disgusted with Congress, mostly the GOP but some Dems as well. Someone should be able to stop this madness, but no one is!

  13. Janis @ RetirementallyChallenged.com Avatar

We had a great turnout for the No Kings March in our downtown. It was wonderful to see more younger faces in the crowd. I remember protesting the Vietnam war with my mother when I wasn’t much older than Sharky. I think it’s great to teach them at a young age that it’s important to exercise our free speech rights.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I liked seeing the younger people in the group too! Both boys, especially Sharky, asked many questions about why we were there, why we felt the way we did and why we didn’t agree with the president. So, we explained the best we could for a 5- and 3-year-old. They behaved amazingly well; Sharky was excellent at sign holding and using the noise makers. I discovered that I could never make a living playing the tambourine. šŸ™‚

I read Project Hail Mary (and loved it). Still I had to look up a couple things… 1) Who the heck is Grace? Duh, the protagonist’s surname. 2) What does Ryan Gosling look like. Of course his name is familiar but couldn’t think what he looked like. Sorry, not a big movie goer. I remember the story arc but clearly I need to re-read the book before watching the movie. Which I’ll do eventually…

I am not a protester although I abhor Trump/MAGA/etc. so I didn’t attend Ann Arbor’s pretty substantial protests except to silently support them.

The SAVE act is really stoopid. So after umpteen bazillion years of women being told to be subservient to their husbands, etc., we are now being told we can’t use their husband’s name to vote? Whut? I mean I know “whut” and “why”, just who the hell voted for this idiot?

I did not take my husband’s name, no hyphen or anything. My mother was not really happy but went along with it (it was my choice) except she continued to put my husband’s last name on legal documents until her death (which caused minor problems after her death). I don’t think my dad cared, at least he never complained. Given what’s going on now, mom is probably proud of me if she’s even watching from wherever she is.

Loved the signs and the kids!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I couldn’t remember how to spell the first name and was too lazy to look. šŸ™‚ The SAVE act is stupid AND scary. They’re going to keep trying it over and over again–or come up with different plans to keep women and other people from voting. I hyphenated my name and wouldn’t do it again. I would keep my maiden name; at the time, I was concerned that my daughters’ teachers would think I wasn’t married. That mattered a bit back then in my small community. The littles had a good time and enjoyed the hoopla!

      1. Kayak Woman Avatar

It didn’t matter much here (for the teachers, I mean) but that was a consideration. One year when I was the PTO treasurer, the PTO president was male (and a really nice guy). He was unsure what name to call me and anxious about it. I told him, “Just call me Mouse’s mom if you want.”

    2. Margaret Avatar

Part of it was that I was a teacher and back in those days (might still be in effect), a morality clause was part of the contract we signed. My mom constantly addressed cards to OD with her husband’s name–that OD didn’t use; mom meant no offense by it. She was just the product of a different time.

  15. Tonya Avatar

I know that people sometimes think “Lil’ ol’ me can’t make a difference.” But I liked this quote: “One of the most important factors to accelerate societal change is seeing more people VISIBLY disagreeing with the status quo.” It is a heady feeling to see all of those masses of people with the same thoughts and angst and fury as we do.

Love seeing your Littles protesting with you! And yay for Sharky for asking questions!

As I recall in the Project Hail Mary book, it went back and forth in time at the start, too. I remember thinking it was cleverly done because WE were getting up to speed along with him as his memory was coming back. I can’t fault that! Tomorrow we see the movie! I’m all a’twitter!

    1. Margaret Avatar

That’s an excellent perspective to keep in mind. Obro asked some questions too, but Sharky had the more perceptive ones. I did tell John that the film was following the book very closely; I think he’s forgotten a lot of the book, except that he was impressed by it. He read it before I did and recommended it to me. I was surprised that he didn’t like the adaptation that much since I found it quite accurate. They did invent a new character named “Carl” and he was great. Now I want to listen to the music again! I adored the soundtrack. I can’t wait to hear what you think; please write a review on the blog!

Dear Margaret, your first tulips 🌷 is gorgeous.
Your photos are beautiful. Baby holding I can see is a joy for you.
Seeing this post reminds me of a very nice and large group of people from Vermont that came here to Montreal to show their support for us and our country. Trump kept addressing us as the 51st state instead of Canada.
I didn’t get to meet these lovely Vermont neighbours as I wasn’t at the place at the time, but I was very touched by their kindness and support.
I have been to New England several times, and Vermont is a place I absolutely love.

    1. Margaret Avatar

My tulips are so late this year! It’s unexpected since we haven’t had much of a winter at all. Perhaps I’m too eager to see them? That was very thoughtful of the Vermonters to show their support. Many of us are extremely embarrassed and upset by what comes out of Trump’s mouth. In case you didn’t realize, I didn’t vote for him!

  17. Pam Avatar

He gets worse and worse, doesn’t he?

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, and so do his supporters and enablers. šŸ™

Thanks so much for posting all these photos about the rally. I really wanted to go badly, but it’s on the weekend when mom is home from day care. I told Art #1 I need to make a sign. #2 I need to get my brother to come and watch over mom for the next rally. I LOVE all your signs. Awesome!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I wasn’t going to go because John was working, but my daughter invited me. Then she also invited my younger daughter and her two boys.šŸ‘ It turned out to be very energizing and fun! The little boys did so well. I think my artistic older daughter enjoys the sign making almost more than the rally itself. šŸ˜‚

  19. Musings Avatar

I forgot to say I’m going to see Project Hail Mary tomorrow. My friends recommended it and are encouraging us to go.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I hope you love it like I did and aren’t disappointed like John was. Please write a review on your blog soon! I was truly blown away by the choral music and how well they adapted the book.

Love the signs. We used ones previously created.
And now I need to read the book first. I was really happy to have read The Martian before seeing the movie.

    1. Margaret Avatar

The big sign was from a previous protest. The others OD made–she loves doing that! I think reading the book before watching the movie is a great idea. It was a long time ago for me so there was a lot I didn’t remember. That’s not a bad thing.
