STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

The Heat is On!

Some of you will laugh and others will roll their eyes. It was in the high 80s yesterday and we were DYING. Older Daughter, the boys and I met a friend and her son at a local pool, stood in a long line of other sweaty people and ended up having to leave–because the pool was too full and there was no more room. So, we drove over to a splash park which was figuratively and literally cool; I could participate even without a bathing suit. However, the water jets were also like my sprinkler yesterday that shot me full face with water when I tried to move it. This time my back got drenched. Those jets were unpredictable! As I told my daughter’s friend though, “You don’t go around water and expect to stay dry.” As for the boys’ swimming lessons, I was dumbfounded. Since I was last there, Sharky is swimming, both on his back and front (under the water) with arms and legs; he’s diving for a ring on the bottom with some assistance from the instructor. He absolutely loves it! Obro, who has at times been reluctant, was ducking his face in the water and paddling with a kickboard. Their progress was astounding!

After their aquatic exercise, they were ravenous for dinner and their homemade blackberry-kiwi popsicles.

Obro was wearing a lot of his. 🙂

My lawns are mowed and ready for the incoming rain.

While watering my plants, I noticed that my strange annual does have a flower of sorts. (still sort of ugly though)

My orange lily is beginning to bloom. Younger Daughter picked it out many years ago; it’s had some rough times under the rhododendron (still there, still dead) but has flourished the past two years.

Isn’t it going to be spectacular? Speaking of Younger Daughter, she’s feeling the stresses of moving. She had to pay her homeowner’s insurance (ouch) and has discovered that, in spite of assurances to the contrary, the owner took the washer and dryer. That wasn’t supposed to happen, but what does she do now? Like her late father, YD always believes the best of people and is much too trusting. How many times have I talked to her about this (un)fortunate quality? I’ve reinforced to her that, no matter your relationship with them or how nice they seem, real estate agents (and sellers) are salespeople and out mostly for themselves and their commission or what’s most advantageous for them. After being hurt and disappointed so many times, when will she learn? I’ve also pointed out to her that the real estate listing says that the house has a HEAT PUMP, but she was told it doesn’t. False advertising? Should I have been more involved in this house buying process? Too late now, eh?

Thankfully, I can walk off my own frustrations. Mostly.

I did a Google Image search of your “weird” plant: “This plant is identified as Portulaca oleracea, commonly known as common purslane, which is a succulent annual often found growing in sunny, dry areas. It features thick, paddle-shaped leaves that are green on top and sometimes maroon-tinted underneath, along with reddish succulent stems. The plant produces small, delicate flowers, which are typically yellow in this species, although ornamental varieties can have other colors. While often considered a weed in gardens, it is also edible and frequently used in salads or cooked into soups.”

We actually got into the high 80s here yesterday! I was out and about and my car reported the outside temp at 88°! It felt ghastly! We are NOT used to that! Very different today.

I guess you can try out a soup or salad with your plant! Lol

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks for your research, T! I won’t be buying it again because I’m not thrilled with the leaves or the flowers. Oh, well! I’m going to edit my post because you are right. I now remember seeing 88 on my car when I was driving out to the kids’ place. 🥵

Does your orange lily have a nice fragrance? You sure are in for a huge splash of color!

      2. Margaret Avatar

OMG, I’ve never sniffed it. I don’t think it has much scent though, if any. The Stargazer perfumes the whole front yard. 🙂

Yesterday was warm. Did you end up at STAR Center? I admire your daughter in making her own healthy popsicles. Sorry YD was swindled.

    1. Margaret Avatar

We tried for the Fircrest pool and ended up at Titlow. Tonya is right. It was actually high 80s. 🔥

Margaret, you know I just love you but your mowed lawn pics crack me up! You have every right to be proud 👏 That was wonderful to hear about your boys swimming skills, handsome pics. And I can’t help but admire YD for trying to be more independent. Sure am glad she has you in her corner still, though. 🙂

    1. Margaret Avatar

You won’t be seeing photos of my lawn much in the summertime, Doug! Although I need to keep the front lawn alive according to the HOA, I do let the backyard go. You will be ashamed! Sharky swims much better than I do.🐠

I love all your pics, all of them! PS. The orange lily is just striking! ☺️

I love the orange one only behind the Stargazer. (Mid to end of July for that one)

The heatwave in the UK has moved on ( thank goodness – I was far too hot and hydrating with gin ! ), and now it’s raining so much I am considering buying an Ark

Great that your grandchildren are enjoying the water – there have been a dozen water deaths here over this hot spell – people not understand or respect the power of water – and most of the dead are young teenagers – desperately sad
And your YD – sigh . Maybe use the power of the internet and leave a Google review to try and shame the seller/ agent into doing the right thing ?

      My lawn looks dreadful
      Yours looks a amazing

It’s tricky because overconfidence in the water kills many people too. Our lakes and rivers, with water coming off the mountains, are cold and that can affect the muscles and get swimmers in trouble. YD’s real estate agent is handling the situation; leaving the washer and dryer was in the contract so I’m hoping it was just an oversight by the movers and that they can bring them back. The agent feels bad that he missed it on his walk through; YD is making excuses for him, but that was his JOB to check out the place because she didn’t have a key at the time. She’s way nicer than I would be!

      2. kayak woman Avatar

        Hydrating with gin LOL

      3. Margaret Avatar

I did a double take since I don’t like hard liquor at all. It mostly tastes like battery acid to me. If it weren’t for an occasional amber ale, I would be a teetotaler like my mother.

The ability to swim is a great skill. It sounds like the boys like the water, and they are making great progress with their ability to swim above and below water.
Your orange lilies are beautiful, and they make a very nice display.
Unfortunately, ethics today seem to be in decline. I hope YD writes a certified letter to the real estate agent listing the issues. False advertising and bait and switch are big no nos. YD needs to demand compensation for the missing washer, dryer and heat pump. Don’t let the agent and seller get away with this nonsense.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I was very pleased and proud of their progress; as you know, we have a lot of water around here. People need to be confident yet not overly confident around it. I can’t wait until most of the lilies have bloomed; isn’t that going to be something? I get very excited about my flowers. Younger Daughter’s real estate guy missed the fact that the washer and dryer were gone on his walk through. YD didn’t have a key to the house until recently and notified him immediately. He’s working on getting them back since it was in the sale agreement that they stayed with the house. What a hassle!

I think it’s great the boys swimming skills are progressing so well.
It was in the 80s, so hot, and yet I kept reminding myself it’s going to be 20 degrees cooler today, and it is.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was low 70s here today and muggy, so not as comfortable as I had hoped. It didn’t hold me back from a walk though!

  6. AC Avatar

I do remember swimming lessons with the grands. They managed but I don’t recall them being exactly like young otter pups. There were bleacher seats to view their progress. My own kids took lessons in the more closed Y-pool, so we never saw much.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Sharky could change his mind about it if he has a negative experience but so far, he’s enjoying it a lot and learning all sorts of strokes. (amazing to me, the mediocre swimmer) My kids took lessons at local high school pools so there was a viewing section. It was as hot as Hades in there!

As I was reading your post, and saw the mystery plant again, I thought, “That’s not an ice plant, it is a portulaca.” And then as I read through your comments, I saw someone had said the same thing.

I am not a fan of heat, but I do like summer days that aren’t humid and the temperatures are in the low 80s. We’ve been having some great weather here in Virginia, but the hot stuff is returning by the weekend. The problem here is not really the heat, but the horrific humidity.

When I was a kid, my mother always signed us up for swimming lessons in the summer at the lake near my house. Because of that, it enabled me to become a pretty good swimmer.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Humidity is a real killer! (even at lower temperatures) I must have liked the look of the portulaca on the tag but I sure don’t now. LOL I’m not the best swimmer although I can swim. I don’t like getting my face in the water and dislike wearing a swimsuit. Back and side strokes are my thing!

      1. Michael Avatar

Humidity certainly is draining. We had portulaca plants for a couple of years. If I remember correctly, their blossoms only last for a day, so it is best to have a bunch of them so that there will always be flowers.

      2. Margaret Avatar

That makes sense. The flower I took a photo of is gone, but there’s another one.

Fun in the sun – your grandsons progress with swimming brings me back to when I learned. It was pure joy and power to move through the water with confidence. We are getting summer like temps here too. What are you planting in the corner bed of the yard? I hope the ‘School Of Hard Knocks’ (my mother’s term for life lessons) isn’t too disheartening for YD.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m not a great swimmer although I can handle myself OK in the water. I wish I enjoyed it since it’s great exercise. I’m not planting anything. That area of my yard, due to the big trees in my neighbor’s yard, is a death zone. The trees suck every bit of water and life out of the soil. So, I have three planters back there. Eventually, those flowers will be more visible.

  9. Pixie Avatar

That’s great that the grandsons are doing so well in their swimming lessons.
Your younger daughter should make a stink about the washer and dryer. What the sellers did is illegal if it was in the contract that the washer and dryer were included in the sale. Either her realtor should be on it, or she could take them to small claims court.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Sharky loves swimming at the moment and I hope it continues! He’s OK with T-ball, likes soccer but loves swimming. YD’s real estate agent is dealing with it. He missed it on the walk through, and I’m sure feels bad about it. I told YD, “Well, he should–because that’s his JOB!” Now it’s a hassle to figure out what to do next.

  10. Luftmentsch Avatar

We had temperatures in the 80s last week. It was very uncomfortable and it’s messed up R’s sleep routine and we can’t get it back as it was.

I’m sorry for YD’s house troubles. I’m also very naïve and trusting and have to consciously be more cynical in these types situations. However, last week, in taking out a drawer from a wardrobe the previous owners left behind, I found a £20 note that had slipped down the back! I hope for a similar windfall for YD.

    1. Margaret Avatar

High temperatures are very hard to sleep in! I know it’s frustrating to get a baby on a routine and then have it disrupted. The house troubles are only the beginning, I suspect. She’ll realize what I’ve told her about home ownership; it has plusses but also many minuses. (and expenses) That’s an excellent windfall! There was a time I bought a vest at an estate sale and didn’t wear it for a long time; when I did, I discovered a $100 bill in the pocket. I couldn’t believe it!

Dear Margaret, your photos are gorgeous, as always! Yes, the heat has commenced here in Montreal as well, although, thank goodness, it isn’t too humid….yet! I realize that some people love the heat, but I cannot handle it. You would think that “by now”, being 69, soon to be 70, and having been born here in Montreal and lived here all my life, I would be “used to it”, but I guess my metabolism just cannot handle this amount of heat and humidity.
And the last two summers were the absolute worst for me, because the heat and humidity reached record temperatures that sent many seniors and people with underlying health issues to hospital, and unfortunately some even died if they didn’t have an air conditioner.
I read Tonya’s comment and see that she was able to name a plant in one of your photos. I often post photos of flowers, trees and plants and rarely know what they are called! LOL! As yet, I don’t know how to search for the name in Google, because I would imagine you have to somehow place the photo or image into the search engine to figure out the name and source of it. Perhaps I will learn how to do this in the future, but for now I am so grateful that many of my fellow bloggers who comment on my posts are able to identify them!
Thank you so much for sharing, dear friend, and I hope you have a wonder filled weekend ahead!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I always think of Montreal as a cold place, but never think about hot summers there. Also humid, ugh!! 🥵 Many people in my area don’t have air-conditioning although I invested in a heat pump and it has been a life saver. We don’t generally get extremely hot weather or high humidity but the week or so that we do can be miserable. I don’t know how to search on the Internet with a picture either, if that makes you feel better! I just wait for my more knowledgeable friends to identify the plant. 😂

It’s been quite warm and dry here as of late. We could desperately use some rain (which we are expecting overnight and Friday; fingers crossed!).

    1. Margaret Avatar

We’re supposed to get rain Saturday. Working people would prefer it during the week or at night but we retired folks don’t care. 🙂

      1. Midwest Mark Avatar

It’s been so dry here, I don’t care when we get it…as long as we get it.

(We got it this morning. 1.21″ of much-needed drought relief!)

      2. Margaret Avatar

Yay! We got rain this morning too–not as heavy as I expected though. Possible thunderstorms later.

I love the purslane. I buy it every year. It doesn’t come back here. It’s similar to flowering moss.

Wow, what a swimmer. I hope Ada does as well. She’s cautious so I’ll be happy if she just learns to swim a little and will put her head under water.

Live and learn….but it’s a hard way to learn.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I think it might be good ground cover, but I only bought one plant. Oh, well. I’m hesitant about the water (although I can swim), so I was surprised by Sharky’s bravery. Obro is more like Ada.

I grew up on a “safe” Lake Superior beach, meaning there was a shallow sandbar system near the shore before it sloped down to over-your-head. No drop-off. Water is not safe anywhere but our family knows our shoreline intimately and limits and rules are easily set – don’t go past the second sandbar, always get an adult to watch you swim (even if it’s so cold they have to wear a winter jacket). Lots of places on the Great Lakes are not like our beach and some of the folks who visit them are not familiar with water. I hate when people in Michigan lose their lives because they don’t understand that (for example) if they walk two feet into the water, they are in over their heads. And they only have swimming pool skills (not to dis those skills or the people who teach them).

    1. Margaret Avatar

Water safety is so important; it’s quiet (and easy) to drown, even in shallow water. It sounds like your family takes swimming supervision very seriously. If the older boys are around water or on a dock, they wear life vests and are still watched over carefully. Older Daughter is a strong swimmer but not over-confident.

  15. Matt Shifley Avatar

This post is such a lovely glimpse into your universe, Margaret! Your mowed lawns look fantastic and completely ready for the incoming rain—the hard work definitely paid off.

It’s amazing how fast grandkids turn into little otter pups in the pool once those swimming lessons click. On a tougher note, I really felt for you regarding YD’s house buying saga. It’s so incredibly hard to watch our kids learn those tough “School of Hard Knocks” lessons about people not being as good as their word. Hopefully, walking off your frustrations helps clear the air. Enjoy an amber ale and some well-deserved relaxation this weekend!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Before the rain came, the grass grew–which it does very quickly this time of year. I hope the grandsons continue to love the water and swimming but also to always be cautious and not over-confident. My husband finally caught on to the reality of his family’s toxicity when he was dying; I hope YD doesn’t leave it that late. I did enjoy an amber ale in downtown Seattle yesterday. Hope you’re doing well, Matt!

  16. Kay's Musings Avatar

You are the best grandma ever, Margaret! I remember when our kids were learning to swim too. The YMCA teacher just dropped our 3 year old son in the water and I nearly jumped in, but up he came. Which is crazy because I can’t really swim to save myself.

Sigh… I’m sorry about the trials your younger daughter is going through. That is really lousy and dishonest of that owner!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, Kay! I enjoy being involved in the boys’ activities, even soccer which I really don’t understand. 🙂 I’m a decent swimmer but don’t like the water much. Older Daughter is a strong swimmer and loves it, so hopefully the boys will take after her. The washer/dryer were part of what was included with the house, so YD should have some recourse. Still a hassle though!

  17. Steve Avatar

It’s terrific the boys are learning to swim and getting so good at it. Knowing how to swim is a valuable life skill, not to mention an easy way to clean off excess popsicle. 🙂

I actually like the Portulaca! But that orange lily is spectacular. It’s so big!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m glad that they both like it because there’s a LOT of water around here! It’s also very good exercise. I’m into either pretty leaves or attractive flowers and in my opinion, the portulaca falls down on both counts.
