A View Into My Universe

Winding Down the Week

After a not so restful night, I’m exhausted but it’s only 7:22 p.m. which I feel is too early for bed. So, I’ll share a few photos of my week, which had some (not all) positive moments. Such is life, right?

John captured this not-so-lovely picture of me next to Scarecrow Dolly. Why did I cock my head that way? And my black leggings blend into the cube behind me. We ended up spending $7 for our trip to the Fair: two delicious scones from under the grandstand, free entrance, shuttle down from a Park and Ride and all the free sights the event had to offer. We’re old folks, thus we ooh and ahh over the flowers, the art and photography, the animals (chickens are beautiful and piglets are cute!), the Japanese Internment Exhibit (Puyallup had a temporary facility called Camp Harmony) and the people watching. In the internment exhibit, both John and I recognized names of prominent local farmers and businesspeople whose families still live in the area; I wondered if any of them got their properties back after they were released.

There were so many dahlias of all different colors and styles.

Is this some kind of dahlia too? Whatever it is, I loved it!

John and I were impressed by the Washington State exhibit. Look at all these apples! I hadn’t heard of some of them. My favorite: The Cosmic Crisp. It’s spoiled me for anything else.

Beer! 🙂

My week has also included chilling with the grandsons. Ian is pulling himself up to stand now and crawling everywhere. He’s such a smiler and full of personality!

With increased mobility come many more mishaps. The poor little guy’s face is a little battered. Still grinning though, as well as drooling. His teeth are coming in fast and furious.

I’ll see these dudes soon for Sharky’s soccer practice, followed by a date night for their parents. Hopefully, I’ll survive trying to get them to bed!

We’ve moved into autumn temperatures in the morning and Mari is delighted to have *her* fire on. My Ireland friend and roomie bought me a coffee cup warmer as a thank you gift. I don’t think a metal mug is the best use of it though. I’m going to switch to ceramic.

My local hardware store has pumpkin spice popcorn? And Chai latte? No, thank you!

Anders gets an M&M when he uses the potty; he always chooses green which is his favorite color. When I go to the bathroom, he insists that I MUST have a treat, and it has to be blue, my favorite color. I don’t turn down chocolate and Anders loves it when I make my tongue blue.

Next on my agenda: The Seahawks play tomorrow and John is making chili. He doesn’t like mine which offends me a bit. I put in a variety of beans and corn whereas he just uses pinto beans. Our tastes vary on several things: some foods (oysters and clams for him, NOT for me), music (easy listening for him, different types of rock and some pop and classical for me) and apparently, CHILI.

After over eight years, I think we can make this relationship work. 🙂

We didn’t go to the fair this year. Glad you had fun. The boys are getting so big, Nd Ian’s eyes! Wow!

John and I haven’t gone for several years although I think I went with the girls and the grandsons two years ago. I won’t go if I have to pay my way in!

I enjoyed reading and catching up on your blog. I love that you had a great trip and sure have been busy after getting home. It seems we do jump right back in to our routines.

Although I love getting away and doing new things and having adventures, I also enjoy routines. They are part of my security. Hope you are doing well!

I am not a fan of pumpkin. My tastes and Sue’s are not similar in many aspects, but somehow, we manage.

I like pumpkin but only in baked goods. Not in drinks and not in popcorn. We all differ in our tastes and that’s what makes us interesting.

Margaret, you are too funny in regards to you and Scarecrow Dolly. You always look nice in your photos! The flowers were very pretty and I had no idea there were so many apples. Enjoyed the updates and pics of your little guys, Anders and his m&m treats for the potty, haha. I almost missed Baby Ian in that one photo with Anders, my gosh he’s a dear little fella! Hope you enjoy your game and that chili. 😊

The flowers amaze me every year! Dahlias take up a lot of space or I would try to grow some! Don’t forget my treats for the potty, Doug. 😉 I drink so much water, that I usually get two or three of them. Baby Ian is moving around everywhere now. It’s exciting but scary. Hoping for a great game and decent chili!

I love a good Cosmic Crisp too! I remember when it was first “invented” as an answer to Minnesota’s Honeycrisp. Well done, Washington.

Personally, I prefer John’s version of chili…but your taste in music, hands down!

I ate an apple off my daughter’s tree and it started turning brown right away. I don’t miss that! Plus, I love the flavor and crunch of the Cosmic Crisp. John’s chili tends to be way meatier than mine too; I had a decade or so of feeding a vegan, then vegetarian, so my chili had to be customizable for every taste. When we do trivia quizzes on YouTube for fun, John is always amazed at my knowledge of rock groups. 🙂

I also like Cosmic Crisp but where were the gravenstein? We used to have three trees but the apple magot got them and we cut them down. Now there are several trees of Harliquin Glorybower for enjoying the fragrance.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Do they still grow Gravenstein? I don’t know if they list the heritage apples that are on all our home apple trees but aren’t commercially grown. I don’t even know what kind we had at our old house. (now my rental) They were tasty though!

I’m with John about chili. Please no corn.

Looks like the ear infection is better. And baby boy gets around. He’s so happy even with bumps.

The coffee warmer is a 1980’s gift. They were popular then. And remember the shaving cream warmers.

I grew up drinking perked coffee so I’d just as soon it wasn’t steaming!

When I have an appt I carry a book or crochet as either will make my wait short.

Hope you have a great week.

I love corn in my chili and in general and John might put some in his too. I can’t remember. Baby boy is getting around everywhere these days and can’t be trusted. It’s nice when they can just sit! 🙂 My dad had a percolator too, but it was before my coffee drinking days. I like very hot coffee, so the coffee warmer will help me out. I’m never bored when I can read on my Kindle app on my phone. Hoping for good things this week for both of us. I have a number of coffee dates which I always enjoy. September 30 is my dad’s birthday, so I’ll take some flowers to the cemetery.

      I’m usually ok until 10!

Ian is such a cutie and on the move now. I’m glad Jack is past that stage now, it’s so tiring.
Your daughters are so lucky to have you.
We have an apple variety called Zester in our backyard, tastes like a honeycrisp.
Those flowers are gorgeous. Looking at all the flowers, knitting, crafts, and baking was my favorite part of the fair but I haven’t been in years. Usually a small town has a much better fair than a big city like Edmonton, in my opinion.
Hope you have a good week:)

Every age and stage has its plusses and minuses. Thank you! I know they appreciate me and that’s heartwarming. I love those heritage apples that only grow in backyards. Well, I’m at the pediatric ER with OD and Obro at the moment. 😬

My music tastes are closer to yours!

When Nephew began potty training, he was also given a treat (sticker or chocolate) for going to the toilet. It led to some “false positives” which may have been attempts to get extra treats…

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, I’m torn about the extrinsic rewards but I don’t turn down the chocolate. 😂

The boys are cute as can be. You cocked your head for the photo because that’s what supermodels do, and you have supermodel in your genes. I don’t think the Japanese-Americans got much back after their internment. Their homes and businesses had been looted or vandalized, their farms neglected. Against a loss of $400 million, they received, I think, $38 million from the US government in 1948. It was extremely difficult for them to rebuild their lives.

    Love,
    Janie

I remember a few stories of people working their interned neighbors’ farms and businesses until they were released, but I think it was rare. A 70 year old supermodel–I like that idea!!

Gorgeous photos, Margaret! Some nights I don’t sleep very well, other nights I sleep well.
Thank you so much for sharing your posts, I always enjoy seeing your post pop up in my reader.

The fair looks terrific. I had no idea there were so many apple varieties. My favorite was always MacIntosh. I need to find a local grower because the grocery store MacIntosh is terrible.
Those dahlias are beautiful. I also like your favorite one. It looks like peppermint stick colors.
Ian’s ability to walk gives him freedom to explore and likely requires a bit more supervision. Busy times are ahead now.
Candy rewards are great motivators. Anders loves it so much he’s decide you’ll be rewarded too. He’s a very funny smart little guy.
I love chili and don’t have a recipe. Meat, beans, onions and peppers with tomatoe sauce and lots of garlic and hots works well for me. I’ll add corn to the next meal.

Those flowers in the second photo are gorgeous.I miss going to a county fair – it’s been years since I’ve been. The grandsons are adorable as ever.

You need to raise more because we don’t see Cosmic Crisp very often. Mostly are stores carry Gala or Fuji.

When I taught World War II, I always did a series of lessons on the Japanese internment camps. It is unbelievable what happened to them, and all that they lost when they returned. Your photos are great as usual! Just reading your blog has put me in an autumn mood, and autumn is my favorite season. After reading through the comments, I noticed that you are at the ER with one of your grandsons. I hope all is okay.
