A View Into My Universe

I never heard anyone say “Top of the morning to you!” and googling the phrase told me that it’s archaic and only used in Irish stereotypes. However, I have a bone to pick about the lack of a top sheet on hotel beds. The humid weather plus windows that barely opened led to stuffy rooms and a clammy Margaret. Since I prefer cooler sleeping conditions, the duvet felt suffocating. Thankfully, our tour guide offered to request top sheets for those of us not sleeping well and VOILA, problem solved. In more tips that I’ve been giving a friend and his partner headed for Ireland in 9 days, take a washcloth. I wasted a lot of body wash and even contemplated using a hand towel in lieu of a washcloth. My friend is already aware of the lack of A/C although we did have a portable unit in our Dublin hotel room. It’s an anomaly though, trust me!

Our arrival in the Big City was a gigantic change: traffic, crossing busy streets (scary!), lots of buildings, much more noise and the problem of getting lost. Have I mentioned my atrocious sense of direction? We didn’t have to deal with any of these conditions in the smaller places we’d visited. However, the A/C unit was much appreciated and I loved feeling cooler.

Our first excursion in Dublin was to the Glasnevin Cemetery where many heroes of the Irish Revolution and other nationalists are buried. I learned a lot about the history of the country and its fight for Catholic rights and independence although I’ve promptly forgotten much of it.

We went down into Daniel O’Connell’s tomb where many of his relatives were also in stacked coffins in a small room. I guess it’s one way to spend eternity with your family!

Did Daniel like them much though? Their remains got short shrift.

A highlight of my Dublin stay (and whole trip!) was meeting up with my former student for dinner and drinks. Thanks to his absentee, but Irish father, he’s now an Irish citizen, lives in Dublin and works for the Irish civil service. He was delighted to spend the time with my friend and me. He’s recently broken up with his partner and is estranged from his mother, so our welcoming and kind faces meant a lot to him. And the food at this restaurant was incredible!

Because I’m a failure at making souffles, I ordered this one and was extremely impressed!

Since I had already had a rather large beer, I ordered a virgin drink “The Flirtini” at our next stop, a Georgian era cocktail bar. It had pineapple, citrus, passionfruit, vanilla, egg whites and non-alcoholic Prosecco. I could easily have drunk several of them, but at 13 euros a piece, I restrained myself. 🙂

I took a double take at this gorilla in the window. My former student told us that he gets decorated for every holiday and I’m hoping that he’ll send me photos of those events!

In the meantime, two of our closest friends on the tour have also come down with Covid. I tested yesterday and am still negative although doubtful that I’ll escape. Evidently though, this strain has a short incubation period and I’ve passed it, so…HOW MUCH LONGER MUST I WAIT? I’m an impatient person.

John, who has already been exposed to me, invited me to his house for the Seahawks-Patriots game last night. Wednesday Night Football, really? For the first part of the debacle, I was thinking, “Well, at least we have pizza and beer!” Then, suddenly, we were tied up, and I started caring about the game, a mixed blessing. An acrobatic interception in the end zone saved us from a Patriots touchdown and the Seahawks won 13-10. Woo hoo! It could be a disappointing season without our #1 quarterback though. (hip injury) I attribute this win partly to my lucky shirt and pants!

Fall is on its way and I’m ready for some cooler temperatures and rain. However, ask me how I feel in November…

Your tree has pretty leaves. Our leaves are dead.

I looked at my dna. My DNA shows 7 percent Northern Ireland and Scotland. Were you in Northern Ireland?. Then specifically it says 1% Leinster, Ireland and 1% Munster, Ireland. My ancestors may have walked where you did.

You had a hot summer whereas ours was reasonably mild. Could that have something to do with it? I’m 17% Northern Irish and Scottish; apparently, Ancestry can’t quite tell the difference. I’m also quite a lot more English (paternal grandmother) than I thought I was. We never made it to Northern Ireland; that would have entailed a two week trip and I didn’t feel comfortable being gone that long.

I would also have trouble without AC or a top sheet. It’s so neat that you got to catch up with your former student. The game sure got exciting in the 2nd half!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was tough to adjust to the humidity, plus the overly warm duvet. The top sheet was such a relief! I enjoyed seeing him and catching up. I think he’s lonely although he does have friends there. His mother doesn’t approve of him being gay, so that’s caused problems between them. I had written off the game completely and stopped caring until the second half. Then it became a nail biter! I’m still shocked (and happy) we pulled it off.

I do trot out that greeting on occasion, maybe to Sue but more likely to the two photo friends who both had an excursion to Ireland.

Top of the Morning is a cool saying even though it’s not used in Ireland. We still associate it with the Irish anyway. It’s like Saint Patrick’s Day there–very local and lower key than our massive celebrations here. Plus, the actual color associated with St. Patrick is blue, not green. 🙂

I can’t believe the covid saga continues–Margaret, that was such a nice photo of your former student (but the thought of being estranged from one’s mother…I know it happens, can’t imagine). Anyway, lovely photos, and wow that souffle–it looked delicious! The lack of top sheets, very interesting. I don’t think I could sleep without one.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Unfortunately, I still don’t know about the Covid situation because I’m not sure of the incubation period or if the tests will spot even a little of the virus, since I don’t have symptoms. What I read on-line gives conflicting information. So frustrating! My student’s mom is mentally ill and disapproves of his sexual orientation. Not a good combination. She pulled a gun on his partner when they were visiting her here in WA. The souffle was lovage, Irish wild garlic and pine nut pesto, yummy! I discovered the difficulty of sleeping without a top sheet, especially in a warmer, humid climate. Thankfully, it could be resolved!

Oh, I definitely require my top sheet!! Lordy. I’m glad your tour guide came through and remedied that for you. (I also require my A/C!) Reasons #2,594,765 for not being inclined to travel.

I figured that was a former student you met up with. So sad his mother is disapproving of him. Why is it so hard to accept who people are? Including one’s own child.

This Covid thing is troubling. I’d been hearing over the summer that it was on the rise everywhere. And I suspect it has morphed over these years to be quite different from how it started out. I hope people continue to get their boosters, or there could be hospitalizations all over again.

I love my top sheet, the window open and my heat pump! Once I had the first one of those, I could at least get comfortable and sleep better. I expected Ireland to be much cooler than it was and less humid. I don’t do well with humidity either! My student’s politics and lifestyle and his mother’s don’t align. It’s a shame because he’s her only child and has never had a relationship with his Irish father. Covid is going through our tour group like wildfire! Everyone is having different experiences with it; my friend has been miserable while one of the friends we made on the trip isn’t very sick at all. I’m hoping I can manage to dodge it but will be getting my booster fairly soon. And my flu shot!

I was in Copenhagen once during a heatwave – in late June so the sun went down at 11 PM and arose at 2:50 AM. They had no AC and no screens on the windows – hordes of partying Swedes wandered the streets all night long singing and partying just outside our open and unscreened windows.. Thus No sleep. I can’t think of any place in Europe I’d want to be during a heatwave!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Although it was only in the 60s and maybe low 70s, the humidity made it feel much warmer to me. I’ve been spoiled by my heat pump. No sleep for you indeed! I always think of the Scandinavian countries as being on the cold side.

I hope you don’t get covid. I have lost track of what the current incubation period is. It was 2 days in 2022, the one time (that we know of) we had it. My husband took two tests. The initial one was negative, or so we thought. So I continued sleeping in the same bed as him. When his twin brother (they had been together) got a definite positive result, he tested again. Positive *and* there was now a faint pink line on the original test. I had symptoms by then.

I hate “body wash” so much I pack a bar of soap if I know I’m gonna be staying in a hotel somewhere (we don’t fly frequently though). Liquid hand soap is fine but body wash seems to me to take *forever* to rinse off. Hmm… makes me wonder if hotels have little soap bars to hand out upon request. You *were* able to get a top sheet that way… I *am* glad most (American) hotels have shampoo in the rooms nowadays. I am not picky about shampoo and hated schlepping it.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I think the current incubation period is 3-4 days, but they hedge their bets when you’ve had a Covid booster, which I have, although several months ago. It means that symptoms might be very mild and the viral load might not trigger a positive. A positive is nearly always a positive, but a negative doesn’t mean no Covid. I’ll test again tomorrow. (nearly a week past exposure) I like body wash as long as I can soap it up on a washcloth or a puff. Some hotels did have bar soaps which I also used.

Dear Margaret, I love the colours of the leaves in that tree 🌳
The food looks delicious 😋 and your photos are beautiful. You have such a radiant smile 😃 😊

I like sleeping in a cooler temperature as well. I cannot stand 😑 it when it is hot and humid.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I love the red leaves too! The food and conversations were wonderful!!

Europe has experienced unusually high heat this Summer. Like you, I like my AC and prefer a cool bedroom in order to sleep well. Tourists/guests will want the comfort of AC so hopefully Europe will install more units.
A bed with no sheet seems odd to me. I’m glad you were able to get a sheet and feel more comfortable sleeping.
Meeting up with your student must have been enjoyable for both of you. He’s made a nice life in IR and has secured a good job.
I am hoping you can avoid Covid. That said, it seems to be working its way through your tour group.

    1. Margaret Avatar

They sure have suffered with the heat and the lack of A/C. Our climate is getting hotter and more unpredictable, but their ancient buildings would be tough to air condition except with portable units. I’m a great lover of a top sheet and they aren’t as common as I thought! It was lovely to see my former student and catch up on his life. I feel like I’m past the Covid danger point although I intend to test tomorrow. Without symptoms though, can I trust the results?

  10. Michael Avatar

One of my first memories of sleeping in Europe was that there were few hotels with top sheets. And A/C is really not so prevalent, even in the warmer countries. That is so great that you got to meet up with a former student, who managed to go and live in Ireland. Lucky him!

    1. Margaret Avatar

They must store them somewhere because they provided them at our last couple hotels. Thankfully! I was shocked to see the portable A/C unit in the Dublin hotel room. It was great though since the window only opened about two inches, if that. We had an excellent time with Austin. He very much appreciated seeing people from what used to be home.

  11. Ed Avatar

I never cared for the European sleep system of no top sheet either, especially during the hot summer months.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I can’t sleep if I’m too warm, so a top sheet is a necessity for me!

Yes, what’s with the duvets? Used to be only in Europe, but now here, too! I would die sleeping under one even in the winter. I have taken to carrying a top sheet and washcloths with me on every trip. Looks like you enjoyed yourself, that’s great.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Smart idea! Our beds were different sizes, but any kind of top sheet would work, although I like mine attached. Can’t have everything! Some people here are anti-top sheet too which I can’t understand at all. I’ve always been a fan of the top sheet and now am SO thankful for mine.

  13. Steve Avatar

I remember seeing that gorilla in the window on my own visit to Dublin! I don’t understand the lack of a top sheet, either. One of the first problems Dave and I faced when we moved to London is that we bought a set of sheets for our bed — and it didn’t include a top sheet! I had to go back and get one (and pay extra). Those duvets can be smothering.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Smothering is a perfect way to describe it–clammy too! I’ve heard that many in the States are also going away from a top sheet; I wash mine every week and wonder if they do that with their duvet cover. That’s amazing that we saw the same gorilla. I forget what street we were on since my student (who lives in Dublin) was leading the way.

That’s pricey for a non-alcoholic drink, but it sounds fantastic.

I’m shocked Drew Lock actually pulled off the win. Maybe he’ll finally live up to his questionable potential.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m not a mixed drink person, but it was very tasty and not too sweet. I was shocked too since Lock hasn’t played at all or run some of those plays, even in practice. He’s a solid back up though; I was terrified they would have to put in Jalen Milroe!

This is so cool that you got to meet up with your former student.
We really enjoyed Ireland too. I sure hope you don’t get COVID. We have an overseas trip planned for November and I sure hope we don’t get COVID.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I would say that the only thing that may have saved me is that my friend and roomie started masking the minute she felt any symptoms. (of what she thought was a cold) I also didn’t sit in the back of the bus where it seems like most of the cases are coming from. I’m not out of the woods yet but at 6 days past exposure, I’m feeling more confident. So, mask up in crowds! I was delighted to meet up with Austin; he only works in the city two days a week and it so happened that it was a free evening for our tour group!
