STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

Well, Here I am

In no surprise to many, including me, Typepad is going under. That’s part of the reason I started WordPress and Blogger sites, just to be on the safe side. However, I never anticipated the loss of my 21 years of Typepad archives: the detailed and sometimes emotional story of my life as a mother of teenagers now mothers themselves, a dedicated teacher, a wife then widow, a cared for later a caregiver daughter and a loyal friend. Now I’m faced with the supposedly “easy” task of migrating my Typepad export to Word Press. Being the cynic that I am, I doubt that the photos, links, videos or formatting will transfer well…if at all. Yet I’m not finished with blogging; as I’ve said over and over, it’s cheap therapy and I’ve always enjoyed writing, as well as making connections with fellow bloggers. I’ve bonded with so many incredible people whom I consider friends although I’ve not met them face to face.

Today was Sharky’s first day of kindergarten and my last day of Granny Nannying for now. It’s been a rewarding but challenging week; I’ve gotten up early to drive on the freeway to the Littles’ house, then cared for both active boys with very few breaks. Although I enjoy being with them, I AM POOPED. Sharky is also starting back up with soccer which he loves. After his practice tonight, where he did some good blocks, Sharky and his teammates played tag; it was adorable to see him interact with other kids that way. He used to be so shy. After a while, he said to the other boys, “My brother is going to play with us too, he and I will be “it” together. He runs fast.” 2 1/2-year-old Obro was standing next to him, just BEAMING, and told his mother, “Sharky said I can play too!” And then Sharky coached Obro on how to play tag and where to go. They chase each other, they fight, they kick, they grab each other’s toys, yet they can also be such loving brothers.

Darling Anders has enough hair for a small ponytail, not that he’ll wear his hair that way. And is it my imagination or have his eyes gone from blue to green and now to hazel? I really wanted him to keep his mother’s bright blue eyes, sigh.

Note: These block things are weird. How do I go back to correct a prior block or add something? At least photos are easy in WP although these look too big. I’m kind of scared to downsize them though. One thing about me though: I will learn. I’ll whine, I’ll complain about changes and I’ll rant. But then I’ll move forward and try to figure things out.

Not always successfully, might I add.

Well, I will tell you that this export/import business with Typepad & WordPress IS NOT EASY. I have been beyond frustrated all evening. Gah! My import timed out without any way of knowing that, I keep getting conflicting information from WordPress support chat, I’m not sure if Typepad understands what file type WordPress requires, and I’ve now had a chat guy tell me that I have to upgrade to an uber-expensive WordPress Business Account in order to be able to use their plugin for importing photos. Again, I want to kick something. Or somebody.

I’m not sure how to manage the size or formatting of a WP blog stuff like photo size or background color, or even setting a default font etc., so when I found something I kind of liked, I didn’t mess with it. It’s like we’re suppose to figure this all out on our own with zero guidance. On Typepad I knew exactly what size the banner needed to be and could easily customize the background color. Here? No so much.

Anders is changing in looks a lot! He’s losing his babyness! Which is what we expect, of course, but it leaves a bit of a pang to the heart.

    Glad to see you here!

I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was hoping it wouldn’t be impossible. I signed up for a premium account, so I’ll be out of luck with photos too if a business one is required. I’m still playing around but like what I have so far. I do miss my sidebar; are those easy to do? Anders is changing a lot indeed; I feel like I don’t see him as much as I’d like to.

Hi Margaret, I had a hard time with wordpress when I first starting using it, but I am used to it now, though I am sure there are tons of features that I don’t know about. The block things are weird. I think to go back to correct a block, you just click on it and then you can start editing. I am glad that you are not giving up blogging as I enjoy reading your posts. Your three grandsons are adorable.

I think I have to realize that I’m not re-creating my typepad blog but am just sticking with the same theme. Many aspects of Stargazer WP will be different and that’s OK. I’m still convincing myself of that. I really miss my typepad sidebar! I tried the clicking on the block but it did nothing. I published then went back to edit and it would allow the changes. Weird. I’m sure it was operator error! LOL

I know that there’s a way to create a sidebar on wordpress. I have one, but I just don’t remember how I did it! At least now I will get notifications when you post!

      2. Margaret Avatar

That’s a positive! Typepad allowed responses to comments, but no one was ever notified that I had responded. That’s why I emailed which was also more private if I had something to say that I didn’t want in the public sphere. The lack of sidebar may have something to do with the template I chose when I first set up this site a few years ago. I don’t want to fiddle with it yet until I get more comfortable with WP. I am guaranteed to mess something up!

Hello! Just checking on how to leave a comment on WordPress. Glad to see you continue.

I hope it’s easy to comment. That was a plus about typepad. I used to have trouble commenting on WP until I got an account there; even then, it could sometimes be tricky.

Found and followed! I’m glad you’re going to keep writing.

Thank you! I’m going to try. If I can’t get my archives over here, it will be upsetting but at least I can still write somewhere.

And here you are!!! Hooray! Also a learning experience for us leaving comments!

I hope it wasn’t too hard! Thanks for sticking with me!

As long as you are posting i am there!

I’m here. Sometimes. WP posts don’t recognize me for some reason although I have a WP account. Anyway, it’s I — AC.

    I think it worked.

BTW, I like this template much more that the other one.

Well darn. I was well into a nice long comment welcoming you and enthusing about seeing you here, part of which was expressing fellow-feeling regarding these pesky blocks—and lost the comment thanks to that very block format. I think it was because I wanted to go back and edit a sentence, and hit delete too many times too close together. Ah well, such is life, and WordPress. I’m gonna post this one now, before it too disappears, but once again

    WELCOME!

  9. addofio Avatar

i have NO IDEA why the comment appeared twice.

I think the only way to get a sidebar is to start with a template that has one. Hopefully it’s possible to switch from one template to another without losing content, but from my decades-old (yikes!) experience getting started with WP, the it took so long choosing the one I have, I’ve been entirely unwilling to update it, in spite of the face that not only to I no longer live where that photo was taken, the tree itself was bulldozed away to make way for housing.

    1. Margaret Avatar

That is odd since on your end the comment completely went away. I’ve had that issue with several WP blogs but never with any platforms. I wonder why! Many of my issues like the lack of a sidebar and the full post not showing up on the computer (the phone is different) are caused by the template I chose. But I’m nervous about changing it so I’m leaving it alone for now. 🙂

      1. addofio Avatar

My initial comment did disappear, then the second one showed up twice.  Maybe because when I tried to post it, WP told me to sign

Margaret, I feel like I’m late to the party! Congratulations on your exciting new blog, I just added it to my own blog’s widget and you shot right to the top on my feed where you belong! I was also happy to read about Sharky’s first day of K (wow) and that was so sweet what he said about his little brother! Wonderful to see Anders on here too! So is this it for new posts on Typepad?

    1. Margaret Avatar

You are just on time, Doug! I barely put this post up. It was late last night when I got home from babysitting. I’m sad to say that I won’t be posting anything more on Typepad; I want the export file they send me (if they ever do!) to include everything, so I’ve ceased blogging over there. It feels weird and although I’m not very happy about the change, I’m finding that WP does have advantages over Typepad. I was used to and comfortable with Typepad though. I hope I can salvage my archives. My friend Tonya isn’t having much luck with that and she’s WAY more tech savvy than I am!

Hi Margaret, glad you figured out how to continue blogging! I am hopeless at anything computery so that would be the end for me.😆 Anders eyes do look hazel now, they are beautiful. Have a great Labour Day weekend!❤️ Robin

    1. Margaret Avatar

I thought Anders would keep his blue eyes since my younger daughter did, even with brown eyed parents and an older sister. I guess one never knows! I’m OK setting up a basic blog but can always manage to foul something up if I try modifications. So, I’m hesitant to change anything even though I’m not sure if I like this template or the white text on black background. Thanks so much for stopping by! xoxo

Yay! I’m so glad you still get to blog. I love the photo of Sharky walking with mom and glad he’s coming out of his shell AND helping Obro with things like this! Having two boys is the best!

    1. Margaret Avatar

If I can move my archives over here, I will be extremely happy. (and also surprised) I know you are partial to boys as I am these days with the three, soon to be four grandsons. I’m now into trains, construction equipment, monster trucks and can handle all sorts of talk about bodily functions. 🙂

Welcome to your new home, I will update my blogroll.

Regarding the sidebar, I think you will need to find a template that has one. Changing from one platform to another sounds like a real headache! I started out on Blogger, but switched to wordpress after less than a year, so it wasn’t too hard. Good luck!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I agree about the sidebar but I’m having a strange issue that I need to resolve first. I can’t edit the blocks once I finish them (or publish?) at least not on my computer. I can do so on my phone which I don’t use for blogging. The other top priority is to try to migrate my typepad archives over here; I doubt that it will work but I’ll be devastated to lose them. Have you changed templates in WP? Does it get rid of the header and make you re-do everything?

      1. J Avatar

I’ve changed templates several times and it’s not too bad. I think I would focus on getting your stuff here firstt if you can, then do cleanup to get it looking right. Meaning, worry about a template later.

      2. Margaret Avatar

Yes, I think I need to figure out WP more before trying out too many changes. For now, I’m focusing on the editing problem. Why won’t the laptop do it whereas the cell phone will?

  14. Ed Avatar

One perk in all this is that whenever you write a new post, you’ll show up near the top of my reading list which is what I use to read through new blogs. I’m guilty of forgetting about your other blog for a few days sometimes since it requires me to manually check if you’ve written something new by finding and clicking your blog title from among the many defunct blogs still on my list near the bottom.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Several other commenters have mentioned that perk also. I’m finding plusses and minuses with WP just like with any other platform. So far though, I can figure most things out which encourages me to continue to blog.

For what it’s worth, I think the photo size looks good!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you! The header looks very big on my laptop but great on my phone. So, who knows??

      1. Liora Avatar

Blocks are a pain. I don’t know anyone who likes them after WordPress switched to using them. This is the second time I wrote this comment, so I hope this time it will show.

      2. Margaret Avatar

The first comment by anyone new has to be approved, but after that it should be automatic. Welcome to Stargazer Partie Deux!

Blocks are a pain. Things were much simpler before they introduced them. I still can’t figure them out sometimes.
