A View Into My Universe

Remarkable Creatures

If you had asked me, I would have told you that I was looking forward to the Reptile and Exotic Bug show but thought it might be sort of boring. Yet this guy, Marc, aka Seattle Reptile Guy, blew up any expectations I had. He does many kid presentations at schools and libraries, is completely unflappable, tells funny stories about the animals (full of fascinating information) and deals with 6 year old behavior in a calm way that I envied. Because when two children dropped the Madagascar hissing cockroaches on the floor to scuttle around, it took all I had to act nonchalant. Neighbor, friend and T-ball coach M. was sitting next to me and I thought she might leap into my lap. 😂

Sharky was not one of those who “lost” his cockroach. Marc showed us how they hiss, talked about their undeserved dirty reputation and made the children and adults laugh with his humor. He’s originally from Holland and still has a slight accent although he’s lived in Seattle for a long time.

Before the birthday guests arrived, we got to meet some of the animals. I’m a fan of most reptiles, although I avoided touching some of the bugs. I enjoyed seeing how fearless the kids were though; it was also obvious how much Marc respects and loves his critters.

Obro was not into the animals at all, but wanted to hang out with his beloved Big Brother.

John was unfazed by the ancient tarantula. She’s 39 years old!

Isn’t this tortoise shell beautiful? It’s very endangered but Marc manages to hatch quite a few of them in his house/menagerie. They like cucumber; it was so cute to see them take tiny bites.

She blends into his shirt, doesn’t she?

It was heartwarming to watch the kids with the animals although one guest was extremely aggressive, pushy and LOUD. She drove me absolutely nuts. Her mom was there but did nothing. I had to escape to the kitchen a couple times to avoid becoming too teacherish. I may have occasionally said, “Let’s calm down. Quiet voices. Make sure to share the animals.” Those were not the phrases I wanted to say!

In my era, I grew up with garter snakes and many frogs, so it was no big deal to me, even though this one was a special kind that changed color. To Sharky however, everything was magical!

This fellow was adorable in spite of his scratchy little claws. 🙂

Even Older Daughter, who isn’t into reptiles, showed off her snake handling skills.

There were a few creatures that no one was allowed to hold. This giant African bullfrog is one. It has an extremely painful bite. So, Marc muzzled it with his hand, so the guests could pet it. I think it must have been the model for Jabba the Hut in Star Wars. The big tarantula was off-limits because it can shed its hair and make people miserably itchy. And Marc said that the scorpions are too stupid to be trained not to sting. When I asked him about the intelligence level of his animals, he basically said, “Look at their tiny heads. They’re dumb, except for the tegu. It’s like a pet and has full run of my house like a cat or dog.”

I didn’t think it looked that bright. It was pretty though!

Older Daughter being who she is, we feasted on “dirt cups” with gummy worms after the presentation. There were several dips and chips, fresh veggies and fruits, and pizza, but the desserts were more exciting.

A homemade (scratch) snake cake! OD used the red devil’s food recipe that was our traditional birthday cake for a long time; she also whipped up some Swiss meringue frosting. I spent many years making that cake and it’s NOT easy. I’m delighted to pass it on to the next generation.

Here’s my cool dude in his new sports sunglasses. He loved his party so much!

Then today it was back to normal with some tedious lawn mowing and a brisk walk in the 70 degree sunshine.

I did get a delightful surprise when I came around the corner with my mower and spotted all these bearded irises. My late husband bought them many years ago, in another lifetime. They’re a poignant reminder of how much he loved spring and blooming flowers. Fall is my favorite, but I’m coming around to his point of view!

What a wonderful idea for a party! The creatures are so interesting and colorful. The irises are beautiful – mine are just buds at the moment.

It wasn’t cheap, but it was worth every penny! I could’ve put 100 pictures on this post; I tried to avoid any that had other kids in them which eliminated a bunch. You have irises to look forward to, yay!

What a party. And I love the dirt cup dessert – so creative.
My one and only iris has disappeared. We have walked past many yards that are just covered in them. I’m going to have to try again because they’re one of my favorites.

It was the best party! 🎉 The dirt cups were crushed up Oreos and some whipped cream mixed with yogurt–plus worm. Irises are tricky. Some years I have a whole bunch of them and other years I have hardly any.

Sounds like a good party! I’ve held snakes before. I also came across one in the street once! Sister recently posted a photo of Nephew holding one to the family WhatsApp group, but I’m not sure where he was.

I never think of England as having many snakes, especially in London! Little kids are mostly fearless although a few of the guests were hesitant at first. Marc says that fear of reptiles is learned behavior and I think he’s right.

England doesn’t have many snakes, so it was unusual to see it!

Margaret, this was so cool. What an awesome idea for a kids birthday party! Big props to John for holding that tarantula and omigosh that snake cake looked amazing. You sure have a lot of wonderful photos here! 🙂🙂🙂

I would have held it, but was much more comfortable with the reptiles–which I do like. The snake cake was very clever and extremely tasty! Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Swiss meringue frosting; I prefer buttercream or ermine frosting, which is what we normally put on the red devil’s food cake.

What a great party. The kids learned a lot and had fun getting a close-up view and experience with insects and reptiles that might only been seen at a zoo or preserved behind glass in a museum.
OD’s cake followed the theme of the party. Nice job!
Those are spectacular irises. Is the color ice blue?
    Your lawn looks great too.
It is finally Summer in MA; today is to be 90 degrees F. We have gone from very chilly to a heat warning.

    1. Margaret Avatar

My lawn isn’t as green as it used to be, but still in good shape. We’ve had rain and now sun; it’s growing like crazy. The irises are lavender. OD is so creative and also such an excellent cook. My mom and mother-in-law were too; it apparently skipped a generation. 🙂 90 degrees, wow! The party was a spectacular success. I didn’t go off on the obnoxious party guest either–that’s something, right?

I think that party and birthday will be remembered for a long time.

I think so too! It was delightful.

Great photos of the party! I am not a fan of reptiles myself, but it looks like everyone had a great time. Your story of the hissing cockroaches reminded me of when I taught. Our school was built in the 70s and was basically falling apart. The teacher next door found a copperhead snake in the corner. It had gotten in via a small crack. We also had a lot of cockroaches. Whenever a kid would see one, he/she would scream and the whole class would erupt into chaos. I had to go and kill it, and the crunch always gave me the willies. I used to joke that the school mascot shouldn’t be a knight, but a cockroach!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I really enjoyed holding the reptiles although I let the kids have first dibs. Are copperhead snakes dangerous? I wouldn’t like that. I’m not a fan of cockroaches, even the smaller German ones that my older daughter fought with in New York. I remember the crunch. Ick! We don’t have many cockroaches here, thankfully. They don’t like our climate.

      1. Michael Avatar

Yes, copperheads are poisonous. I have lived in Virginia most of my adult life, and I have seen them, but not very frequently. I saw one last summer as I was walking on a trail in the woods. Fortunately another walker warned me what was down the trail, so I already had my eyes peeled.

    2. Margaret Avatar

Many snakes would really rather hide from people and only strike out when disturbed. Once on the River Walk in Spokane (Eastern WA), a friend and I encountered a king snake. I’ve never seen one that big and was hesitant. Then an old lady on the path walked by and pushed it aside calmly with her shoe. LOL Our Eastern side, due to its drier and hotter climate, also has rattlesnakes. I’ll stay on the wet west side!

      1. Michael Avatar

We don’t have rattlesnakes here in central Virginia, but there are some in the Blue Ridge Mountains about an hour west from where I live. I am not a fan of snakes.

Your comment about “becoming too teacherish” made me smile. Decades ago, the summer after my first year of teaching, I was walking along the south rim of the Grand Canyon with my mother. A couple of young boys ahead of us, maybe 9-10 years old, were tossing rocks over the edge of the canyon. Having been raised in the mountains of Idaho, I had been taught never, ever to do that because you don’t know who might be down there, and because it might start a rock slide. The parents were in front of the boys and were oblivious to their behavior. Eventually I couldn’t stand it and told them to stop, and explained why. Before becoming used to telling other people’s kids what to do (from a mere year of teaching, mind you), I would never have intervened in that way! But it just popped out; I don’t remember making a conscious decision to say anything. I remember being shocked that I had done so, which is probably why the memory has stuck in my head for over 50 years 😄😄.

I would have done the same thing as you. In fact, on a family trip to Hawaii, we were climbing Diamond Head and there was a group of loudly swearing military guys. We had our young daughters with us, and I let those guys know that their language wasn’t appropriate. My husband later told me, “You’re going to get me beat up.” LOL Why are so many parents oblivious? Do they not know what to do? In the instance of this girl, I would have said–either you stop pushing, sticking your hands in Marc’s face, and not sharing or you will come sit by me for the rest of the party.

Love photos, Margaret! I am not a fan of snakes or spiders, but they do fascinate me and I enjoy learning about them…but at a distance. LOL!
I am pretty familiar with iguanas, salamanders and I absolutely love tortoises and turtles. Tegu is something new to me.
Fascinating post, dear friend. Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I think you would’ve loved this party, Linda! It was so fascinating and there was no pressure to hold any of the animals. I wanted to set a good example for my grandsons about not being afraid of things that are different and harmless. Plus, I do like reptiles! 🦎🐢

I had never heard of a tegu – now I know something new! My sister is a reptile/amphibian rehabilitation and has had several much loved iguanas, including one that loved to be held on one’s lap so I have had opportunities to interact with all her various critters. One of my sons had a friend with a big tarantula and when they were transferred overseas it came and lived with us for a while – I never really warmed up to it and warned the kids that if it got loose in the house the repercussions would be horrible to contemplate. Anyway, great party!

Tegus are very smart and affectionate. It had an amazing tongue but when it was extended, there were too many kids visible. Dang! I can’t imagine tarantulas as pets. They don’t seem loving! 😂

I’ve never been to a reptile party but there have long been folks in my city that can be hired for parties and they (by reputation) are pretty good. I’m not afraid of reptiles except that the only two snakes that I can identify with certainty are in my homeland (the upper peninsula) and there are no venomous snakes up there. So I would be wary encountering a snake I didn’t know anything about.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I would definitely be cautious. If I remember correctly, Marc told us that many non-venomous snakes mimic the venomous ones except that they are not brightly colored. I think you would have gotten a kick out of this party!

What a fun party for Sharky and the kids. I sure wouldn’t have wanted to touch or hold some of those little critters. Eeek!
Your Iris’s are beautiful, Mine have died off unfortunately, but I finally have a few red tulips that have bloomed. Tonight we are up for some possible frost in areas. then we warm up and I can get some flowers planted.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was an excellent party for the adults and the kids. The presentation was incredible! The only critter that I avoided was the Madagascar hissing cockroach. No, thanks! Many of my irises aren’t blooming; there are probably too many of them. I love tulips! Luckily, they like the cold. Planting annuals is very satisfying and therapeutic for me.

  13. Pixie Avatar

Happy belated birthday to Sharky. I could do the reptiles, but not the insects and especially not the tarantula. I don’t even like typing out the word:)

Your yard looks lovely and so do the irises.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you! You’re not late. His actual birthday is tomorrow. He has a T-ball game, and my daughter will bring treats to that. I would have held the tarantula but avoided the hissing cockroaches. I just don’t care for beetly type things. This is a good time of year for my grass; it won’t look great in a month or so, depending on the weather gods.

Just catching up – have been so busy! I would not be thrilled about all those beasties… however, glad everyone enjoyed them. Looking forward to your news about Ireland. Don’t like it more than Scotland, please!!

    1. Margaret Avatar

The children enjoyed them and some of the adults. The boys’ other grandma kept her distance as did most of the other parents. I couldn’t possibly like Ireland more than Scotland! My heritage lies there, although I’m interested to see the sights in Ireland. I also won’t get my own personal tour like I did with you!
