A View Into My Universe

As we face our first Heat Advisory, the comments on news articles are also heating up. I get SO tired of “That’s not very hot. You should deal with Xstate’s temperatures” or “Just get air conditioning!” (my heat pump cost $14,000–do most people have that?) We used to rarely need A/C, but times have changed, and our summers seem hotter and drier. More wildfires too. šŸ™ So, because I didn’t want to mow the lawn in 90 degrees, nor will I have time in the midst of Granny Nannying tomorrow and Saturday, I did both the front and back yards and now am sitting in my recliner, feeling every year of nearly 70.

The bunnies are still nibbling on my petunia in spite of the cinnamon. Suddenly, the rabbits are NOT so cute.

My skeleton rhododendron is detracting from my other beautifully flowering plants. I’ve texted Thu once already with no response; it’s time to figure out what’s going on and if his back will allow him to remove the rhody. Much as I like the guy, I want the job done SOON.

Older Daughter is deciding on an outfit for her 40th birthday party and its ’80s theme. She found some awesome jeans and a shirt with shoulder pads but seems dissatisfied with the look. I wonder what she’ll do with her hair. I haven’t mentioned my own costume. I’m trying to surprise her; unfortunately, she knows me well enough to suspect me of subterfuge.

As for my outfit today, I thought my new camo leggings were black so I wore a black shirt. They’re actually blue! However, I was too lazy to change.

If you have Next Door or Being Neighborly, do they often make you grumpy? Yesterday, I read a plea from a mother whose son didn’t want to go through graduation ceremonies (at my old high school) so he didn’t order a cap and gown. Now, only a couple days before graduation, he’s changed his mind; the mom was upset that when she called the school, they didn’t have a cap and gown just lying around for her son. And we wonder why some people are so irresponsible? I didn’t comment because I didn’t trust myself to be nice. It’s getting that way on Facebook too…

I think I need a cold drink and to chill out–in many ways. I should work on my perspective since many have it way worse than I do. However, I’m a person who has to rant a little, then I can calm down and laugh at myself. That’s getting more difficult in today’s world though.

In other news, please send healthy and healing thoughts to an excellent, supportive and caring blog friend who has been fighting long covid for years (miserable!) and is now in the hospital with other issues, requiring surgery and a week-long stay. Thinking of you, Doug!

Good on you for getting both yards done. Carl has been picking away at weeding and just requested an electric mower for his birthday, to replace our old reel mower. I did get a new hose and sprinkler so I don’t have to continuously cart things from the front yard to the back yard and back again.

I’ll want to hear about how that electric mower works. When my current one dies (or rusts out, whichever comes first), I may go electric. I have a fairly big yard though and I would want the charge to last long enough. You remind me that I want to buy another nozzle for my back hose. I have to transfer the one I have back and forth when I water; it’s a pain!

We got a battery mower (brand – Greenworks) a few summers ago and it has been great. I love not having the petrol smell when I mow.

      2. Margaret Avatar

I love the idea of a battery mower! Does it cut the grass well and last long enough to finish the lawn?

I couldn’t comment this morning, but it seems to be working now. Not that I have anything to say. šŸ¤“

I wonder why it wasn’t working. I sometimes have trouble commenting on Blogger from Edge and need to change browsers. Other times, it works fine. The mysteries of the internet!

Next Door seems to always have annoying posts or lots of arguing. Best healthy wishes to your friend.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Some of the people on there seem very needy or perhaps lonely. I feel sorry for them, yet also a little distrustful. Thanks, Marie. Doug has had a rough go of it and can’t seem to catch a break. šŸ™ He deserves so much better!

Upsetting news about Doug! Thanks for the heads up.

I’ve been emailing with him; although I told him not to respond to my latest one, he hasn’t–which is unusual for him. He had a severe gall bladder attack and has had two operations. He didn’t say what they were. I sure wish I lived closer!

Hi Margaret, I was emailing with Doug a couple days ago. He said he had his gall bladder removed and had an operation on his bile duct. I am very worried about him!

      2. Margaret Avatar

I am also very concerned. Surgery of any kind can be tricky, especially with his long Covid.

Thanks for letting us know about Doug – I have emailed too and am keeping him in my thoughts

The UK had incredibly hot weather – too hot for this Irish lass – and now it feels like autumn again with buckets of water and really high winds . I sat in the rain most of Monday – we saw a little tennis , about a match and a half – but my son and I spent the afternoon laughing which was great

I find Margaret that as I get older my tolerance for people and their foibles diminishes . I deliberately keep my circle small since Tony died , and am increasingly irritated by family members who , knowing that Tony left me financially very secure , think that I should share those assets with them . His niece contacted me this week – to remind me of her birthday – and tell
Me that her planned emigration to Canada was in jeopardy as she was lacking funds . Neither of her parents could help her but ā€œ knowing how fond ā€œ Tony was of her , she wondered if I could give her Ā£15,000 for her move

I hope my silence spoke volumes

I like unpredictable weather for the most part and prefer rain to extreme heat. I wouldn’t like sitting outside watching tennis in rain though; it sounds like a great time though, a little tennis and a lot of fun with your son. That’s crazy about his niece asking for money, especially that high an amount. People can be such a disappointment. I haven’t heard anything from Doug recently and I’m quite worried.

Sometimes I think dealing with heat is a relative thing. If one isn’t used to it, 90 degrees can seem downright unbearable. But if that’s the norm, then we adapt. Heat pumps are very common here in central Virginia. We have gas heat now, but I have had houses with heat pumps.

The part in your post about the graduation reminded me of the countless times as a teacher when things like that happened. In my humble opinion, the mom should have just accepted the fact that there were no caps and gowns…a learning lesson for her child.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I agree with you; don’t they say that the blood thins in constant high temperatures? Washingtonians have thicker blood! My furnace is gas but it rarely turns on except if it drops below freezing in the winter. Otherwise, the heat pump handles mostly everything. I didn’t mind the mom trying to find a cap and gown for her son (was he doing the same or just expecting Mom to do it?) but blaming the school really annoyed me.

      1. Michael Avatar

Schools get blamed for a lot of stuff, don’t they.

      2. Margaret Avatar

They sure do and it makes me furious!

We’re home from Yellowstone just in time for the higher temps. Our whole trip was relatively mild with a few blustery days.

    1. Margaret Avatar

That’s great that the weather cooperated for your trip. It could have been very hot!

You worked hard on that yard. Bunnies are eating clover here in mine. My yard is mainly weeds. I have to mow both sides of my lane too. I own it. 600 feet plus.i push mow lots of it.

You will be the hit of OD’s party with your get up. I had forgotten about padded shoulders. I sort of liked em.

So sorry about your friend Doug.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I have been working hard on the yard and for now, it looks great, as do most of the flowers. It won’t last as we get into full on summer! I’m hoping to make my daughter happy with my costume; she will like that I’ve gotten into the spirit. Meanwhile, John will make an effort by wearing one of his Hawaiian shirts. That’s the most he’ll do. šŸ™‚ I haven’t heard anything recently from Doug and am increasingly concerned.

It is blazing hot in Massachusetts too. Oppressive heat is no fun.
I mowed the grass two days ago and it was horrendously hot.
Given what is in the White House, people are not themselves. It is no excuse, but the White House actions do impact us all. Being unreasonable and general bad behavior is the signal from ahigh. Not good. Lately, I find people out of sorts and/or angry.
Wildlife in the garden is challenging. Rabbits, woodchucks, and deer all do some damage on my property. I find planting close to the house helps but it is not always a full solution.
Planting only things the wildlife does not like works the best for me.
Thanks for the update on Doug. I hope he is okay.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I can usually get yard work done in the morning when it’s cool although I’m an afternoon type. If it’s hot enough though, that won’t work! People are indeed angry and seem emboldened to act badly, due to what they see in our own administration. It’s very sad. I’ve not had issues before except with slugs, so I’m still trying to figure things out! I haven’t heard from Doug for a while. It’s concerning.

  10. Midwest Mark Avatar

I get it. Deer and rabbits are a lot less cute when you’ve got a garden you’re forever trying to protect!

    1. Margaret Avatar

      Exactly!

So glad I don’t live anywhere hot, though Scotland is currently rather overdoing it in the other direction. It’s quite chilly! Have you ever thought of getting one of those robot mowers? With a regularly-shaped lawn like yours, I imagine it would cope very well.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I do like mowing for the most part. Making those lines is rewarding. Maybe when I’m way older! 90s are not my favorite!! Cool weather is better.

Beautiful photos, Margaret! It is hot and humid now here in Montreal, temperature said to reach 40 Celsius (or 104 Fahrenheit). I cannot take this intense heat and humidity at all. Even 30 Celsius is difficult for me, so image 40! I am just glad that I am not alone in this, as I read some other blog posts it gives me some kind of relief to know I am not alone in having difficulty with this heat and humidity.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I can’t believe those temperatures. I would hate it! You are certainly not alone regarding the scorching weather. 🄵Be safe!

I tried to quit Nextdoor because it was becoming so ridiculous, but my main peeve was that it wouldn’t abide by my settings for what my neighborhood is! I’d see posts from Olympia! I wanted Harstine Island only, and for a while that worked ok, but now it’s all over the place. And it would NOT let me quit it!! I’ve finally gotten all the posts emailed to me automatically sent to Spam.

I’m loving today (74°! Goldilocks!) and watered my flowers. John blew off the deck and washed outside windows. I’m very glad we don’t have to worry about a lawn.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Next Door is the same for me, not local enough. Add to that the annoying people! Being Neighborly is another one, not neighborly at all. 🫤 It’s been a beautiful day and a perfect temperature for me.

I would hope the school would let the kid walk without a cap and gown. I mean, bad planning on his part, and they shouldn’t be expected to bail him out, but he ought to still be able to participate, right?

I heard an interesting heat fact that resonated with me. If you have a normally low body temp (like me – never above 97.8) then hot weather feels even hotter than someone whose normal temp is 98.6. It certainly explains why I can’t handle the heat very well. I’ve thought of getting mini splits, but my, they are expensive! I hope you’re enjoying all the grand boys!
