STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

Last time I was here, it was for the birth of Obro. This time, my hospital visit involved Older Daughter, whose husband drove her to this hospital’s ER due to back spasms and extreme pain. I didn’t tell her when she asked me to come that I had a Ram Ladies luncheon planned, nor did I whine when a delicious lunch (usually a Cobb salad) turned into a disgusting protein bar from the vending machine. It was either that or cookies, chips or candy bars. By the way, HOW do people make supposedly wonderful desserts with protein powder? They claim that their concoctions taste just like cheesecake, brownies, Reeses peanut butter cups, etc. For me, the aftertaste is gross. 🤢 And much as I love cottage cheese, I also question whether it can become the base for a sweet treat.

Being in the ER is an eye-opening experience. Because of where this hospital is located, there is security everywhere and some very down on their luck people. I left there feeling depressed–for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, OD’s tests (urine, blood and CT scan) showed no structural issues with her back; that doesn’t mean that she’s not still miserable and cranky. Due to the muscle relaxers they gave her, I went back to her house to pick up Sharky; the kind neighbors had fetched him from Farm Camp, then I drove back to the hospital to get OD. What a day! Afterward, I stayed to help with swimming lessons since the boys’ dad doesn’t usually take them.

I like my son-in-law except when I don’t like him. As my daughter has complained about, he too often makes threats that he can’t or won’t follow through on. In the car when the boys were squabbling: “Do you want me to turn this car around or go to swim?” Of course, Obro, who doesn’t adore swimming like his older brother wanted to go back home. YOU DON’T GIVE A CHOICE THAT ISN’T REALLY A CHOICE! Once we arrived at the Goldfish Swim School, our two fishies, even the reluctant one, did great. Obro frequently volunteered by raising his arm, put his head in the water many times and smiled and waved at us. Sharky swims well and has been promoted to a more advanced class. He’s already a better swimmer than I am! However, Sharky is nervous and reluctant to change since he’s used to his teacher and their routines.

I asked Obro for a picture with his Boeing shirt on, then sent it to John who responded: “That’s not just a Boeing shirt. It’s a B-17 shirt!” The boys thought that the B stood for Boeing, but it actually means Bomber.

In more mundane news, John had a great time at the car show with his family.

I’ve finally finished the scones I made for 4th of July shortcake. Breakfast of champions!

I’ve fit in a few walks although not as many as I would have wished for.

I found some snails on my lily; should I be worried? They’re cuter than slugs although they’re essentially slugs in a shell.

Upcoming events: Tomorrow I have an oil change and potential rear brake replacement. I’ll take my gigantic book club book with me; waiting for the car may force me to read more of it than just a few pages. Anders’ 3rd birthday party is Saturday (minus John who has plans with his family) and I’m trying to figure out what food I’m doing and what YD wants to bring. I haven’t heard much from her lately which is, as always, nerve-wracking. It can be a bad sign. Then, there’s the usual watering and lawn mowing, sigh.

I can definitely live with this weather forecast, but it would sure be helpful to see a couple days of rain on here. Wildfire season is upon us, and we really need the moisture.

Summertime rain is pretty rare up there, though. Right?

    1. Margaret Avatar

In the past no, although it usually happened in June. The past few years, it’s been rare. Perhaps that’s part of why the wildfire issue has become so critical.

My dad is at that hospital. I really like the security people at the Emergency room…always polite and helpful.
    Hope OD feels better soon

He’s there right now? I hope he’s doing OK! Yes, everyone was very kind and helpful. I specialize in getting lost and they were great at giving me directions. 🙂 OD is cranky–she bit my head off when I offered some advice about using ice to reduce inflammation instead of heat. “I’M DOING BOTH.” Well, OK then…

I’m very sorry you missed your lunch but oh man! Poor OD, I’m glad she had you there with her! Is she doing any better, do they know any more? (I just read the comment above about her biting your head off…) Good grief! Well, I love Obro’s snazzy red shirt… and I very much envy your mild weather forecast. We had temps all last week in the 100F range, I’m even doing a blog about it tomorrow. Hope we get an update on OD soon :^(

    1. Margaret Avatar

I texted her this morning and she said her back was still acting up. I hope she feels some improvement soon; it’s discouraging to be in constant pain/discomfort with no hope for better days. I’m sure you can relate with your long Covid! The forecast is nearly perfect. I do wish that there were a couple days of rain in there though. I like summer rain.

ERs are not fun, especially with two young kids who need to be taken care of.

My friend is in hospital awaiting a pacemaker after some very low heart rates.

Our weather is keeping pretty hot.

    1. Margaret Avatar

ERs are not fun at all; even though it wasn’t crowded at all, it took a long time to get out of there. I’m not very active in the morning–more of an afternoon person, so hot weather isn’t great for me. I waste whole days if it gets near 90! Luckily, Sharky was at Farm Camp and Obro at daycare, so we didn’t have to worry about them until later in the day.

Dear Margaret, so sorry you missed your luncheon, but it was kind of you to be there with OD. I hope she is doing better.
We are supposed to get rain here in Montreal tomorrow, and I pray we do! It’s pretty hot and to have this kind of heat for several days with no rain or relief is very difficult. However, if we do get rain I don’t think it will let up enough; however, I will be relieved to get some rain!
I enjoyed reading your post and looking at your photos, dear friend. It is one degree under 90 Fahrenheit here! 31 Celsius! 🙁
I hope you get some relief on all accounts, dear Margaret…the heat, the health of your family and some down time.
Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I hope the rain makes the temperatures more comfortable! My older daughter doesn’t know anything about my missed luncheon. She would not have allowed me to come if she had. I appreciate your kind words about my photos. I think they’re an easy peek into my life.

They tell you it tastes great because it brings them money, either through
algorithms or you purchasing the recipe. They are just throwing up some recipe they’ve likely never tried and are using their influencer status to get you to click. If someone complains that it tastes horrible, they can fall back on, “well you must have done something wrong…”

    1. Margaret Avatar

I think you’re right about it being all about the money. Or their standards for desserts are so low that they don’t really care about the aftertaste or the fact that it tastes nothing like what they’re copying.

I thought of you this morning when I saw that the one bud on my old Stargazer lily out front is blooming – probably the deer will eat it tonight so I am visiting it frequently today. Guess I could pick it and bring inside….. Hope your car repair place has decently comfortable seating in the waiting room!

Wonderful! There have been years where I only got a couple of blooms but this year it looks pretty full. It’s still about two weeks away from blooming though. I can’t bring any stargazers into the house because they’re deadly to the cat. The dumb creature likes to nibble!

Protein powder or cottage cheese in a dessert? No thank you! I’ve tried a few breakfast recipes that are okay, but only if you really want extra protein. I’m sorry OD had to visit the ER – never a pleasant experience, but sometimes necessary as I recently found. You are such a treasure to your daughters – I’m sure they know that! I’m envious of your forecast temps but hope you get some rain soon.

    1. Margaret Avatar

As I mentioned, I love cottage cheese and eat a lot of it, probably too much. But it’s tangy and definitely has its own taste. I probably should eat more protein although I’m hoping never to need to resort to protein powder. My daughters mostly appreciate me and tell me so frequently. As long as it doesn’t do so for Anders’ birthday party (at my house), the rain can come any time!!

I HATE hospitals with a passion. What a horrible day you had. I hope your older daughter mends quickly. I have never had back spasms, so I consider myself lucky. I am not a fan of protein bars myself. I hate that chalky taste. I see what you mean about your son-in-law. Making threats that you can’t follow through on when dealing with kids is not a wise move as they figure that stuff out in a heartbeat. In a way, even dogs are like that!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’ve spent a lot of time in hospitals between my husband and my mom. I know way too much about the various ones in the area although I’m not as familiar with St. Joe’s. We mostly stayed in the MultiCare system while St. Joe’s is part of the Franciscan one. I hope OD isn’t going to have chronic back issues. My mom did and so does my brother. I was hoping it was a kidney stone that would quickly pass–no such luck! The first bites of the protein bar weren’t bad. Then the bitterness got worse in a cumulative way. OD says that she’s talked to SIL about this issue several (many?) times and that he doesn’t get it. For a smart guy, he can be really dumb. I do have to say that it wasn’t a horrible day. It was an adventure with ups and downs and quite interesting in some ways. I felt good about helping out.
Funny note: The ER staff kept asking if I was the patient. LOL I’m the old one, so it was a natural assumption.

      1. Michael Avatar

Well, I am glad it wasn’t a horrible day. That’s a great attitude!

I actually like the flavor of chocolate protein powders (the flavor
I think you dislike is due to the usual protein being CONCENTRATED whey proteins (from milk))…. the flavors remind me of Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks I sometimes would clamor for as a kid.

I have made a few protein powder desserts and also a “cheesecake” made from cottage cheese…. and I thought they all were good and also interesting. If you are not expecting them to be like their traditional versions, many can be unique and good in their own way.

    Your scones look so wonderful.

I guess you can correctly surmise I am hungry. 😂 We have not had dinner yet.

    PipeTobacco

    1. Margaret Avatar

So, the protein powders aren’t as bitter/chalky as the stuff in the protein bar? I’m intrigued. I do love cottage cheese although I’ve never had it in a dessert. My major complaint with those recipes is that the people claim they taste exactly like cheesecake, brownies, etc. instead of telling us that they’re a different alternative to that dish. OD was a vegan for 7 years, so I had many vegan desserts. Some were delicious, others awful. Most of them tasted quite different from what they purported to be. On the other hand, Cafe Flora, a restaurant in Seattle, is a vegan restaurant and their desserts (and foods) are better than most or many non-vegan goodies.

      1. Pipe Tobacco Avatar
        Pipe Tobacco

I always try to go into a recipe with the mindset that “alternative” variations on desserts (cottage cheese, protein powder, aquafava, etc.) will be a sort of “facsimile” of what the purport to be…… and anticipate they will have flavor and texture differences that ARE different, but MAY be pleasant in their own way. 🙂

The one exception (for me) to that rule is that in many (most) desserts, I can make fat-free versions that are usually exactly as tasty (exclusions would be regarding pie crusts and similar aspects of desserts…. I have tried to make fat free pie crusts in VARIOUS ways….. and none have been particularly successful.

      2. Margaret Avatar

Aquafava, I remember that! OD cooked many vegan dishes, and I loved the meal ones like stir frys; desserts were much trickier. Some of the recipes I’m talking about with protein powder have only three ingredients and I can’t imagine that they taste that great. Still, the internet cooks oooh and ahhh over how absolutely perfect they are. LOL Doubtful.
I remember much frustration around here with pies, including my own.

I loved cottage cheese as a small child. Until… I was very sick in bed with strep/scarlet fever/whatever and my little (3-year-old) brother stuck the ‘gar, a blue crayon, that he’d had in his *mouth* into the bowl of cottage cheese next to my bed. He used crayons to emulate my dad, an occasional cigar smoker in his youth. I was really grossed out (probably vomited but don’t remember) and haven’t touched cottage cheese since.

I do hope OD feels better soon.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s funny how we associate foods with negative experiences. My mom was sick once and had some root beer; she threw up and from that day on never touched root beer. I’m sure that wasn’t the problem! I’m almost afraid to text her; she is discouraged and snappy. I would be too if I were in constant pain! My back issues weren’t as severe and resolved quickly. I’m still being careful though.

Vending machine snacks are not very good tasting. They are really a last resort snack.
Back muscle spasms are excruciatingly painful. My husband gets them and has gone to the ER to get muscle relaxers. With him it is a chronic problem. The PT has recommended exercises to strengthen his back muscles, and they help as long as they are done regularly. I hope your OD gets some relief soon. Alternating hot and cold compresses does help. She might find a medical grade cooling pad useful.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Oh, there were some good ones in there like Crunchy Cheetos, but nothing very healthy. I tried to be good! 🙂 Is there anything that brings on your husband’s spasms? We need some advice. I’ve advised gentle exercises and some walking (versus sitting, which is tempting but not good); perhaps a PT would help with that. I’ll suggest it to my daughter. A cooling pad is what she needs. She’s doing too much heat, but when I tactfully told her that, I got my head handed to me on a platter. Eek!

      1. Susan Avatar
        Susan

I believe the weak muscles in his back caused the spasms. Alternating cool and then hot was recommended for back spasms. Two months of PT was helpful. Doing the muscle strengthening exercises several times a week also helps. He could be fine for months and then bend over to pick up a paperclip from the floor and the back goes into spasm. That said, he often abandoned the exercises thinking he did not need them because he had no spasms for months at a time.

    2. Margaret Avatar

My back has been like that, fine until I make a quick or unexpected move. I don’t generally have issues though and no spasms, just moderate pain. I think OD needs to explore those exercises and PT. Thanks for the tips!

You really can’t make empty threats with children. They catch on very quickly. I hope your daughter is feeling better. Sore backs suck. I injured mine 13 years ago and it’s still sore in that spot, dislocated some ribs when I fell on my camera:)
Cottage cheese does work well in muffins but it must be put in a blender to use, to smooth out all the lumps. It’s high protein but it’s also quite expensive now.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I agree 100%. I had to talk with my own husband about pretending to give our daughters choices, thinking they would pick what he wanted. Then when they often didn’t, he would try to talk them into his point of view. No, just no. My husband listened to me and learned not to do that. I hope that OD’s back issues aren’t chronic. She’s already a depressive type and that would make it worse. 🙁 I would do cottage cheese in muffins but not make fudge out of it–and a three ingredient one at that.

My sister told me during her day with my dad in the ER they never actually got into a room, just a stretcher in the hall. Then they finally admitted him. (He’s still there and improving, and may get discharged when a rehab room is secured). He pulled out his IV this morning, and then was negotiating with the nurse – they would let him dress himself and then he would let them do a blood draws. 🙄 I hope they can find the humor.
I hope OD feels better, sore backs impact everything.

    1. Margaret Avatar

We got into a small room in the ER, but were 100% sure that she wouldn’t get admitted. Your dad sounds like a character! Or does he just hate being in the hospital?

    2. kayak woman Avatar

I find the humor but then I know your dad!

      1. Margaret Avatar

OD mentioned that many of the staff in the ER seemed like they were in a bad mood so possibly not able to appreciate any humor. To be fair, from what we saw, I don’t blame them at all.

    3. Jay Avatar

My Dad is not patient at this stage. Once he starts feeling a bit better he wants to go home. He’s just a little too weak at this point. But that should work in his favor in rehab. Do the exercises and you get home faster.

      1. Margaret Avatar

Getting home was a huge motivation for my late husband and my mom. Mom was a good patient whereas my husband was terrible. He wanted OUT, even though he couldn’t manage very well at the time.

I was wondering about you. You have survived another crisis. The return to work to that job probably set this off for OD. The mind and body are one. Tense mind, same body.

I can’t take those energy bars anymore either. I used to buy them. I’d explore all of them. Now, I can’t stand of them. They’re all nasty.

Hopefully, you’re wrong about YD and everything is going great.

It’s mid 90’s in Arkansas. The only good thing about is the grass turns brown and I don’t have to mow as often.

Hang in there. Continue supporting and doing things with those 4 boys. If SIL loves those two babies and your OD, he’s a keeper!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I sometimes buy energy/protein bars because they sound great, but then they’re a disappointment. You could be right about the stress of the job exacerbating the back issue; tension is not good for any part of the body! That’s HOT! We’re going into the low 80s today and that’s a little too warm for me–tolerable though. SIL is mostly an excellent father and I certainly wasn’t the perfect parent either.

  16. Betty Renfroe Avatar
    Betty Renfroe

Well, mind and body are one. Tense mind makes tense body. The return to job she hates set off the back injury probably. I hope she gets adjusted to the life she has.

A SIL that loves your daughter and the boys is one to applaud. All else is really just things to sigh inside and overlook.

I used to explore those energy bars and buy them. They were my go to snack. Now, I can’t stand any of them. They’re all strong tasting and nasty. I never buy them. They don’t even tempt me in the grocery store. I guess I changed.

Our temperatures are averaging 95. The only good thing is I don’t have to mow with vigor each week. Brown spots appear and where the grass is still greener it grows very little.

Enjoy those 4 boys. Amazing how different each child is. They each have about 1000 cm’s of the same dna, but that leaves 6000 that are unique to them. They share about 1/4 their dna with you. They don’t get a 1/4 from the 4 grandparents equally. A child can inherit more from one grandparent over their other three. I think it’s fascinating. You had two girls and now you are seeing how different little boys and girls are!

    1. Margaret Avatar

The grandsons are very different indeed. I love how we all inherit bits and pieces of our past and carry our relatives forward with us. Since I only had girls, but grew up with three brothers, having grandsons is the best! My lawn has slowed down too but I will trim it before Anders’ birthday party, just so it looks even. It looks like you used two different email addresses. WordPress didn’t recognize the first one, so I had to approve that comment.

I typed again as I thought it went to trash. Yes, it was my Gmail one. Is it ok to use it? It the one I use with google.

    2. Margaret Avatar

Now that I have approved your comment from that email address, it should be fine and go through automatically. WordPress is still a little bit of a mystery to me though.

  17. Suzanne Avatar

Glad that there are no structural issues with your daughter’s back, and hopeful that she can get the pain under control. Back pain is so debilitating.

Your grandson is so cute! The smile with the missing tooth is adorable.

I do not like the taste of protein powder at all. I suppose some people just get used to it? I can’t do it.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Now she just has to take it easy, hard to do with two little boys. She also has a yard and garden to maintain which I think is part of how she hurt it. Weeding is NOT great! Thank you, that grandson is quite a character and has such a big beaming smile. Dessert recipes, like for fudge, with only three ingredients, one of which is protein powder, make me gag. Are we the only ones who notice the aftertaste or are there better ones that are delicious?

  18. Matt H Shifley Avatar

Oh Margaret, what a whirlwind of a day! First off, I am so glad to hear Older Daughter’s scans came back clear of structural issues, though back spasms are absolutely excruciating. I completely crack up at your critique of your son-in-law—you are 100% right, you never offer a choice to a kid if you aren’t prepared for them to pick the wrong one! 🤣 It’s wonderful that you were there to swoop in and save the day with swim lessons. I hope OD gets some relief soon!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was not the day I had planned, but I’m also learning to go with the flow; I have to be flexible with four small grandsons to help out with. I trained my late husband NOT to give non-choices and he did eventually learn. Daughter’s back is better, she says–with still an occasional spasm. Hopefully, she won’t overdo because of the improvement. I’ve been guilty of that this week.

  19. Tonya Avatar

I feel so bad for OD! Nothing worse than back pain, and I sure hope it remedies pronto!

I suspect that those snails are indeed snacking on those leaves. I mean, their relation to slugs is pretty tight so I’m thinking that’s a likely possibility. I wonder if slug pellets would work on them, too? I had a bit of slug problem shortly after I’d planted my annuals and sprinkled out some pellets and the problem cleared up FAST.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’d never heard of the pellets! I’ve used Deadline, which is probably not very effective or safe for other animals. OD’s back seems to be better although, like me, she tends to overdo (ie do what she wants) before she should.

      1. Tonya Avatar

Corry’s slug and snail killer (pellets). I got it from Amazon, but you can get it anywhere with a garden center (Walmart, etc.)

    2. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, T. I’ve heard of that brand. Patt always had the Deadline around but it’s a pain to use.

  20. Kay's Musings Avatar

I’m so sorry for your daughter. That sounded so horribly painful. I wonder if PT would help. I just hope she is able to be back to normal quickly.
Unfortunately, I’ve been to the ER more times than I care to remember for mom and myself.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I suggested PT to her and my brother advised a chiropractor. I’m not sure how I feel about chiropractors. There are some good ones and some quacks. I guess we can say that about any profession. The ER isn’t a fun place; no matter how empty it is, you still have to wait, wait, wait.
