STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

Finding the Good

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way.”

John Lewis, February 21, 1940 – July 17, 2020

In Lewis’ memory, I spotted my first stargazer lily bloom this afternoon, after a hectic couple of days. Fantastic times but still exhausting.

Those who have read me for long know why I chose the title of this blog, which I hesitantly began in September of 2004. The first reason for the name is obvious–my gigantic stargazer lily in the front flower bed. There have been years when it barely bloomed and I wondered whether that was a sign to shut down the blog. Other times, like this year, it’s loaded with flowers. It’s one of the unsolvable mysteries that I just have to let go. I also am a huge fan of astronomy and entranced by actual stargazing, so when I was looking for a name for this site besides “Margaret’s Experimental Blog,” Stargazer seemed like a fitting choice.

Yesterday I picked up Sharky from Farm Camp, complete with pickles that they’d made, took him to the library to get a book I had on hold (I’d already read it!), and brought him home to play and get beat yet again at UNO by a crafty 6 year old. After work, his mother and younger brother arrived because they were going out to a movie night at a local park and would be spending the night here afterward. But first, we ate OD’s incredible mafe; I do so love West African dishes! I begged off the film due to my cold; they were meeting their good friends and neighbors there anyway, including Sharky’s close friend, M. Plus, I wanted some quiet time with my traumatized cat.

M’s older sister K gave Obro a piggyback ride and the children played for hours as they waited for dusk. It’s VERY late in our far north state! Eventually, they saw “Togo” which OD said was an excellent film, although she ugly cried in several spots. Most people have heard of Balto, who ran the last leg of the 1925 “Great Race of Mercy” to deliver diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska during an epidemic. However, the true hero of that event was the lesser-known Togo who covered WAY more distance (170 miles) than any other lead dogs and over the most dangerous parts of the trail. I’d like to watch the film, but it’s not available anywhere except E-bay–at outrageous prices. 🙁

Incidentally, OD and family returned to my house after 11, so the boys didn’t get to bed until 11:30 or so. After that, OD wanted to chat about interesting family tidbits she’d picked up when she met with a cousin on her dad’s side. By the time I made it to bed, it was after 12 and then I COULDN’T sleep. I’m sure it was partly my cold and partly the unsettling information about my late husband’s family. (we’re estranged, so it doesn’t affect me, except peripherally) Finally, Obro popped into my room before 6:30 a.m. because he’s an early riser no matter what time he goes to sleep. It was a three coffee morning!

They’re so peaceful when they’re asleep and not wrestling, chattering, running around or bugging us for treats or TV time. 🙂

This morning I headed off to Younger Daughter’s to babysit Ian for Anders’ gymnastics class and to hang out with both boys after that. Whew! I’m POOPED. I should go for a walk, but I’m severely lacking in energy right now. Perhaps exercise will invigorate me?

As for the ocean camping trip, John hasn’t asked whether I’m going tomorrow and I intend to leave it up to him. I feel OK (not 100% but decent); I do have a cold though and no one except Mari might want to be around me.

I’m definitely feeling like it’ll be an early bedtime tonight at several households.

Oh goodness- some lovely but exhausting days . I cannot cope with many late nights now – although the pain in my knees keeps me up

Beautiful pictures of your beautiful grandsons
I hope you are recovered and that if you do go you enjoy your trip

John wants me to go although I have warned him of my probably infectious nature. 🙂 The grandsons are very cute and personable! They are so much fun. I am already ready for bed though and it’s barely after 8 p.m. here.

Is that the same lily plant from 2004? I’m impressed if it is! I was never very successful with asiatic lilies; they much more delicate than the day lilies I grow. You do keep busy even when you’re sick. Enjoy the camping trip if you do decide to go.

It is the same one! I’m not sure how old it is, but it could be nearly as old as the house. (30 years) It generally doesn’t get terribly hot or cold here although I always consider my lilies, or any bulbs, reasonably hardy and reliable. Tulips not so much, I lose some every year. John called and told me that he’s picking me up about 11 tomorrow morning; I told him about my cold and worry about infecting anyone else, but he still wants me to come.

That’s certainly a beautiful photo of your Stargazer… this is interesting, I’ve wondered before if your deceased husband’s family kept in touch with his daughters at least…. well Margaret, I certainly hope you’re able to make that trip. I’m glad you’re feeling up to it. Hope that continues.

I think my daughters have some contact with their aunt but want nothing to do with her husband who was and is unbelievably toxic. They want no relationship with their uncle either; he did nothing to help and only criticized, yelled at my husband about his treatments and his oncologist (wanted him to try out internet cures) and had always ignored me and our children. On the other hand, their aunt’s children were very supportive, and we’ve had coffee and lunches with them occasionally, including me. I’m trying to stake up the Stargazer; there are SO many heavy flowers on it. I hope I can go to the ocean; I love the mighty Pacific!

What is it with sleep? I had rather a short and restless night here.

I slept better last night. It will only be a one coffee morning. 🙂 Hope you got more rest as well.

I have always liked the title of your blog, and now I know the reason behind it. It is amazing that the plant has lived this long! You certainly have been quite the busy lady, I would have been pooped too!

Ironically, on the day when you couldn’t sleep, I woke up at 4 AM and couldn’t get back to sleep, and I had gone to bed too late as well!

I read through the comments and saw that you are going on the trip. Have a great time and hopefully the cold is on its way out.

I like having a blog title that’s meaningful to me on several levels. I have been busy and I’m not sure that camping will be any more relaxing. But I do love doing things and being at the ocean is very therapeutic. Those timeless waves! Packing for ocean weather is tricky though. It’s usually much cooler and often windy.

Poor you! Still, it’s nice to be needed. Hope the cold gets better soon. xx

I do enjoy being a big part of the grandsons’ lives, especially since I know that will change as they get older. I’ll love it for now!

What a busy eventful time. Summer will soon be a memory and the boys will have many good ones.

I tried to not have breaks with my family. It was my goal to just be quiet and not add to a divide. There were many on my husband’s side. I regret any that my actions added to.

Your Lily the stargazer looks outward and upward. My Lily Forgotten dreams is a backward focus. Your choice is a much better way to live. Set your sights on what’s to come and don’t ponder what didn’t happen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I hope the boys have many great memories of summer! It’s been beautiful here although we’re expecting more hot weather (for us) and some wildfire smoke. (ugh)In my case, I had little choice in the matter with my husband’s family. They were angry at me for whatever reasons and there was nothing I could do (or wanted to do, honestly) to mend that. I always try to look forward although that gets tougher the older I get.

Now I have to make some groundnut stew (the name for it I learned in Ghana)! It’s a comfort food for me, and I don’t make it often because I . . . ahem, over-indulge when I have it on hand. Let’s see, there’s tomato paste in the cupboard . . . (wanders off mumbling to herself).

OD had potatoes, carrots and cabbage in hers as well as chicken. I should have taken a photo! She said that it tastes better a day or two after you make it, like many tomato based dishes.

One effect of your blog name is that now that the Stargazers are blooming they remind me of you. My struggling plant has a bloom and a bud – it’s in a shady place and needs to be moved, which I would love to remember to do this fall. Somehow this year the deer haven’t nipped off the buds although there is still time! Thank you for the ground nut stew recipe – I ate it a lot in Mali, had forgotten, and will enjoy revisiting those memories.

    Cheers,
    Ceci

That’s a nice thing to say! If the deer eat them though, I hope that’s not a bad sign for me. LOL I loved many of the dishes I had in Senegal–mafe, yassa and thieboudienne for example. We did eat lots of French stuff too while we were there. I have to say that the pizza with corn and peas on it wasn’t my favorite! OD has been to Mali too and liked it. She went farther north than the State Department wanted her to and that made me nervous.

Interesting – I was just about to get on a rickety plane to head north and got a quick visit from the Embassy security person saying there had just been an incident and I should not go, so I didn’t. Back then they had the person power etc to keep a close eye on things; I’m hearing it’s not like that these days. I do regret missing that part of the trip but such is life.

Hi. Quiet reader here. Could you wear a mask for your cold to protect the others? Just a thought, and thank you for sharing. You brighten my day.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you for your comment, Lily! What a kind thing to say. I always carry KN-95 masks in my purse. I imagine we’ll mostly be outside which doesn’t worry me. I’ll offer to wear a mask when we’re in the camper with others.

Bless your heart, Margaret. Sleep 😴 is sometimes hard for me.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos and for this inspiring post.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, Linda. When I’m congested, it’s hard for me to fall asleep. Or stay that way!

I’m not remembering how long the camping trip is but, if it were me, I would hang out in and near John’s posh camper (much more posh than ours – LOL) until I started feeling less infectious. I also like Lily’s mask idea. I brought a bag of KN95 (leftover from covid) to our cabin on L. Superior. Not so much for disease, knock on wood, more for the smoke coming down from Canadian wildfires. Disclaimer: I do NOT blame the Canadian government for these fires. They cannot fully control what happens in the HUGE and SPARSELY POPULATED forests that stretch throughout the entire country. The Canadians are doing what they can (I’m a dual citizen), they are our friends, and we should be HELPING out. Rant over 🙂
