STARGAZER:

A View Into My Universe

I didn’t appreciate my Apple Phone (correction: watch)berating me about my lack of exercise yesterday (hey, the air quality was unhealthy), so I was determined to get out on a walk this morning if at all possible. When I saw “Moderate” on my phone (and Alexa), I took off–also before the 90 degrees and more smoke arrived.

Instead of the gray haze, there was bluish sky!

I also liked the breeze, although it didn’t do much for my freshly trimmed (actually butchered) hair. I was careful to tell my hairstylist that I wanted a TEENY trim, but she still went overboard. As my dad used to say, “It will grow.” Hopefully, before my party! The best news is that I’ve been hearing two magic words from the weather forecasters, “MARINE AIR.” Living by the Pacific means that systems are always blowing in and out; the one coming tomorrow will rid us of the smoke…for now.

A friend and I are working on our Coffee passports; I doubt that I’ll finish mine due to my trip and other plans. However, it’s an excellent excuse to try some new places, as well as to sample different foods and delicious treats. Anthem had a boring but decent breakfast sandwich, and I indulged in a decadent Biscoff cookie from the Holiday Cafe. It was heavenly in spite of probably being 1,000 calories. Sunday, friend J. and I will hit two other establishments to support our local small businesses.

In front of the Holiday Cafe was this gigantic dog, looking rather hangdog. It was a hot day, so I hope he had some water in the bed of that truck. I didn’t feel comfortable approaching although I’m generally fond of dogs.

This animal of mine was curious about my Euros; perhaps she wants to come to Ireland with me?

Younger Daughter is talking about cutting Anders’ hair; with all his curls, it’s definitely out of control. Cute though! It’ll be a tricky endeavor. More challenging is that Anders’ and Ian’s grandfather is terminally ill (multiple myeloma and dementia) and will be going on Hospice. Since the boys’ dad lives in the same house, I’m not quite sure how this is going to work. Note: He has the boys only two days a week on his days off, so it could be fine. I’m just a worrywart!

Unlike his big brother, this darling guy has very little hair to worry about at the moment. Such BIG eyes! Please ignore my atrocious socks; I need to do some laundry. LOL

I decided to take some of my Stargazer lilies to the cemetery, including the newly opened pink one to the left. Tomorrow would have been my parents’ 72nd anniversary but I’ll be busy with John on that day–which is exactly what my mom and dad would have wanted for me. The beauty of the flowers can’t come close to the beauty that my parents brought into my life. I’m proud and thankful to be their daughter. As they both would have said though, “We’re no longer around so you’re doing this for yourself, not for us.”

Too much time on my hands, too little ambition to house clean inside (I did vacuum and dust a little), not enough motivation to start any projects…that led to doing very silly things with AI filters. I really need to find better uses of my time, eh?

I’m sorry to hear about the boys’ grandfather.

Haagen-Dazs Biscoff ice cream is E and my favourite, but you can only get it from certain stores.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Oh, no! Now I have to look around for that ice cream. 🙂 S, the grandfather, has had a lifetime of unhealthy habits and then this illness–which he hasn’t recovered from, in spite of a stem cell transplant. The dementia could be because of the multiple myeloma. His death will cause many changes in the family which will affect my younger daughter and her sons. I worry about that although there’s nothing I can do about it.

I think your AI-ing worked out nicely.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you, I don’t use AI often (to my knowledge) and felt guilty about doing so, but it turned out well. 🙂

I love that AI “photo”! I think it is fun to play around with it. It actually is amazing when one really thinks of it. Who would have ever imagined that when we were kids, we could do this sort of thing.

I love the idea of a coffee passport supporting local businesses. Where I live there are few local cafés, mostly chains.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It can be fun (and habit forming) to play around with, but since I’m anti-AI, I feel like a hypocrite when I use it. I love trying out the new places! I’ll need to keep up my walking though. All those places have pastries!

I like the AI photo. Your hair is longer in it and looks very nice.

I’m getting excited about your trip, because I travel vicariously:)

Multiple myeloma and dementia sounds like a horrible combination. I have a very good friend with multiple myeloma and I worry about her endlessly. The doc has given her 2-4 more years and I told her to spend her money. She’s almost died twice now from pneumonia but she’s not in much pain which is good.

    Enjoy your coffee:)

I liked that cut but it was an absolute BEAR to style. The photo was right after the appointment, and it never looked that good again! The granddad, S, has many health issues and has had very bad habits his whole life. He’s only John’s age. When my dad was dying from acute myeloid leukemia, he got a form of dementia caused from the illness. I wonder if that’s what’s happening with S.

We often worry about children and world experiences but they are much better at adapting than we are. I think it’ll be just fine. It’s good to hear that their father is still a part of their lives.

You gave a star to your star. Having those two parents were what made you who you are. They controlled your genetics and your early environment. You got started on a firm foundation because of them not a rocky start. What a gift.

I love coffee. Are you allowed to consume a lot of it. The caffeine is a problem. Sigh. Why to I analyze everything.

    I love the ai image.

Your trip is looming. Will we hear from you then or will we just wonder about you stomping across Ireland.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Kids seem to just accept the way things are. When Younger Daughter moved, I thought Anders would have a horrible adjustment, yet he did just fine. We adults have a much tougher time adapting to change. My parents were my best friends and my loving support; they understood me and loved me to perfection. I have one mocha in the morning–or a couple cups of drip. After that, it’s decaf or half-caf. In the winter I sometimes make a pot of decaf for a treat in the evening. I have my special Belgian Chocolate Toffee creamer! I try not to use AI very much. I won’t blog from Ireland; I may do a little Facebook though. I don’t blog from my phone and won’t have my laptop. I’m Margaret Lite on FB and it would be some photos and superficial commentary. I save my stories for the blog.

I love that ai picture! What fun!

You were so lucky to have nice and loving parents. What a blessing.

I’m hoping your air clears up soon and walking is more fun and healthy then.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Lovely to hear from you, Kaye. I hope all is well in your world. I try to stay away from AI, but I got bored. 🙂 My parents were wonderful, my best friends and caring supporters. Today is starting out moderate and supposed to improve even more. MARINE AIR, YAY!

Fudge, my comment wasn’t saved, typing this while on the way to my own hair appointment! Anyway Margaret your haircut looks really cute and I love Anders floppy locks. Ian is just a doll as always. I like the Stargazer on your parents marker, today is my own parents wedding anniversary. Married August 7th 1958. I hope this comment takes!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I hate it when that happens, Doug! I always feel like my first comment was perfect and that my follow up isn’t going to be as good. Thanks, I didn’t want my hair that short and was VERY clear about it. Grrr. Ian is personable as well as cute. A real snugglebug! I think August is a popular month for weddings, but what are the odds that our parents would have the same one. Mine is in December, which is becoming more popular.

Oh not those beautiful curls! I said the same when my nephew’s got their first cuts. My daughter was like Ian, bald for the first year of her life. I got tired of the “what a cute boy” comments, so I just agreed, haha. I love the coffee passport idea – what a great way to stimulate business. Ian’s eyes…

    1. Margaret Avatar

I doubt that she’ll be able to do it; he won’t hold still for a haircut, not at this age anyway. My mom claimed that I was mostly bald until two years old. Now I have plenty of hair. As I told my friend, we’ll get the coffee shops whose politics I don’t agree with out of the way first. 🙂

You were lucky to have wonderful loving parents that gave you a great start in life. I love how you, to this day, celebrate your parents.
AI is fun to play with. The AI generated photo of you is lovely.
Thankfully, hair grows. I can’t count the number of times my hairdresser over-cut my hair.
Anders has wonderful curls and a careful trim might be okay; kids tease and Anders does not to be bothered by teasing.
I am sorry to hear that Anders and Ian will see their grandfather in hospice. I have to say, hospice nurses and aids are wonderful people.
A coffee passport is new to me. I’d love to have a passport to try all the coffee shops nearby.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I was very close to both parents and was like them in different ways. They understood and accepted me unconditionally. I don’t do much with AI or TRY not to. I switched to a different stylist when my usual one was busy, and she did a better job. Now I have to figure out how to tactfully request that person instead of her colleague. I think the grandfather will be downstairs in a Hospice bed, so I don’t know how much they’ll be exposed to the situation. And it’s OK if they are, just not in an upsetting way. There will be many strangers in and out of the house too, which Anders will notice. Ian is also getting wary of strangers, so that might be tough. I love the passport idea! I know that it’s manipulating me to buy goodies in the coffee shops, but I find that a great use of my money!

Glad your air quality is on the upswing! Aside from one really bad day last month, I guess the wind has been mostly favorable for us, as the wildfire smoke hasn’t been too crazy. Knock on wood.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Tempting fate! We’ve had moderate with a few days of unhealthy for sensitive groups. It could have been (and might still be) much worse. 🤞

  11. Linda Avatar

Hi Margaret, I echo AC’s comment. Beautiful photos. ❤️

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you, Linda! I do enjoy sharing my photos with my friends. It gives them a peek into my life and allows me to revisit my memories on old posts. 🙂

Margaret, you are so young and spry looking in the flower-picking photo. Ha!

When do you leave for your trip? Can’t wait to hear about your plans.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I wish that was still me! I loved that haircut, but it never looked that good after I left the hair salon. I leave on August 28th, coming up fast!!

Hah! What app do you have on your iPhone to tell you to exercise?!? I do not have it (or if I do it must not be set up).

If I could get my phone to remind me to do so, it might be helpful some mornings when I do not feel like getting out of bed.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s actually my Apple Watch. I don’t think I was clear enough about that. How I wish that our phones could get us out of bed in the morning! I wake up easily to an alarm after 37 years of getting up at 5 or so. I’m happy not to do so anymore.

  14. JT Twissel Avatar

iPhone’s can be so bossy! Sorry to hear the grandfather is going into hospice – that is rough. I love to see the fog rolling over the coastal hills. Yeah for the marine layer!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s actually my Apple Watch that reminds me to stand and lectures me about not moving enough. I’ll have to clarify that in my post! The grandfather should have been in Hospice a while back. It’s been a huge stress and burden on the grandmother. Yay for 33 AQ today!

  15. Mary Avatar

I love the coffee passport idea, wish Edmonds would do something like that.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s a great idea! My friend and I are hitting two more places tomorrow. 🙂

  16. Kay's Musings Avatar

I think your haircut looks really nice, Margaret. Honest.
I cut my mother’s, Art’s and my own hair and I never know how my hair will turn out. It’s kind of spooky. I’ve been to beauty shops, but then I figure I could do that myself. So I do and no… I don’t look like what the beauticians can do.
The nice thing about curly hair is that if you make a mistake, you can hide it. 🙂

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, Kay! John was very complimentary about my hair and doesn’t think it’s too short. It always looks better when I blow dry it myself with my round brush. I’ve discovered though that my hair doesn’t lay right when it’s thinned. Hair stylists want to do that since I have thick hair.
