A View Into My Universe

Into my Seventies

What does 70 feel like? Frankly, about the same as 69, or even 60. It’s meant many Facebook wishes, texts from friends, a few cards (not many do them anymore), flowers from my financial advisor, video and FaceTime birthday greetings from my grandsons and daughters and several meals out with John. Being John, we went to our usual Mexican restaurant for dinner and the next day–lunch at Applebees because of a 1 appetizer and two entree deal for $25. Both places bring back fond and poignant memories of family get togethers, special occasions and lunches out with my parents. We used to love to share Applebee’s Sizzling Caramel apple pie!

Speaking of sizzling, an ill-timed walk in the heat left me “glowing” for John’s arrival.

The owner of San Blas is a petunia whisperer; I’ve known her for decades through our family patronage and she swears these plants are small when she buys them. John insisted on a photo! We split our favorite fajita quesadilla and had Negra Modelo on tap–a 16 for me and a 24 for him.

My financial guy is very generous with flowers, gifts and lunches at my favorite waterfront restaurant. John, the cynic, “He must be making a lot of money off you.” I prefer to think that Chris is a thoughtful and astute advisor who wants to continue managing my accounts. 🙂

After our Applebees lunch (delicious and reasonably priced, with a friendly server), we took a walk around a nearby lake, stopping at this rocking swing for a photo op. Naturally, John paused several times along the way to interrogate ask people fishing about their catches, bait, poles, etc. Is anyone surprised?

Anders is in the midst of singing Happy Birthday to Grandma and Carol is wondering what in the world is happening. I think she’s often puzzled by the two small humans who have entered her territory.

These boys ran around in the heat and got too sweaty, so I chatted with them while they cooled off in the basement in their underwear. Can you see my turquoise tee-shirt in the background? Tomorrow their mom and I will take them off to a city an hour away where we’ll visit a bug and reptile museum. I never would have envisioned the activities that would bring me joy; at 70 (or at any age), I vow to remain open to new and unexpected adventures, even scary insects.

Today my friend and I will continue our coffee crawl by buying something at a participating coffee kiosk, having lunch at another place and then getting a treat at a third business. Sbux still owes me a free drink too!

And normal life goes on with my birthday behind me…thankfully.

Happy birthday anyway. I’d love to be 70! – though I’d prefer 30… Enjoy your coffee sampling!

Thanks, Pam! I’m hoping that 70s will be healthy and happy for me. I liked my 40s best, I think. My children were older and more independent while not yet being adult and I was very active and busy.

Hey Margaret, sounded like a wonderful birthday! Loved the pic with you in front of all the flowers, and I like those ones of Anders singing and you with John, and too funny the boys in their underwear. Did my share of that at their age :^) Anyway, congrats on turning 70 with style and hope you’re enjoying your coffee day!

It was great but I’m relieved to have it over and move on. (although my actual birthday party is Sunday!) I wish I could have posted that video of Anders singing but real names are used and as you know, I don’t refer to the grandsons by their actual names.

Happy 70th Birthday, Margaret! 🎂 What a wonderful, joyful way to kick off a new decade. Your attitude about staying open to new adventures—even bug and reptile museums!—is so inspiring. It sounds like you had a lovely week of celebrations with John, family, and good food. Wishing you a year ahead filled with health, happiness, and plenty of great coffee!

Thanks, Matt! I was spoiled by all the attention and felt undeserving. New adventures are what it’s all about and I rarely turn down invitations, even to bug and reptile museums. 🙂 Hope you’re doing well!

I’d say that are ringing the 70s in very well indeed. Congrats to you.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you, John! I’m moving forward into a new decade although as John has informed me, I’m actually in my 71st year. Shush.

      1. AC Avatar

He’s being pedantic, but it’s true. I am close to entering my 80th year.

      2. Margaret Avatar

He kept telling me last year that I was already in my 70th year; I think he was trying to make me feel better about the milestone birthday.

You look great in that picture with the petunias! You are rocking 70 my dear!

So sweet that the grands called and sang Happy Birthday to you. It looks like it was a sweet birthday with friends and family.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thanks, Kaye! I don’t know why my head looks so small; I have a big head! It was wonderful to hear from the grandsons.

I’m always happy to have birthdays behind me as well!

I like a little bit of fuss but it’s easy to be disappointed or overwhelmed. It’s my problem!

That totally looks like a miniature cat next to Anders.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Perspective, eh? Carol isn’t a big cat, but she’s no mini.

The last time I was in Applebees, it was two for $20! I guess that has been awhile back.

My financial guy must be a bit salty that I kept most of my money to invest myself since he never sends me anything but an emailed birthday wish once a year. I suppose with the money I have saved over the years, I probably could have bought a florist business.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I have not the least interest in deep diving into financial stuff whereas Chris is an expert and very trustworthy. Or he seems to be anyway! Working full-time and dealing with two children and their activities gave me little time to do any research or even follow what was going on in the business world, so I’ve left that up to him. He’s proved himself over and over again as someone who is very gifted in the field.

      1. Ed Avatar

I was that was for many years too but then I discovered that even the best financial person rarely beats the market average for any given year. This isn’t so bad until you realize you can buy funds that follow the stock market average so by holding those, I earn what the stock market does and beat my financial guy easily every single year. Not to mention he charges .875% annually to manage my funds and to do it myself, I pay a princely fee of 0.05% annually.

      2. Margaret Avatar

You seem to enjoy it and are interested in it; that’s key. My guy always beats the market average, charges .5% only on what he manages (not my securities) and keeps up on all the market trends without ever pushing me to do anything like buy or sell. (unlike some previous guys I had)

      3. Ed Avatar

Studies have shown that maybe 40% of financial investors can beat the S&P 500 in any given year. But if you look at a 10-year average, that number goes down to less than 5% and at a 20-year average, something like less than 1%. So if he is “always beating” it, he is a statistical anomaly and someone who should charge a lot more.

My advisor once pointed out that he beat the S&P 500 once when he was trying to entice me to give him more of my money to manage. But once I pointed out his fees, it brought him under the market slightly for the year. After that, he sort of gave up. But I keep him because he offers great tax advice.

      4. Margaret Avatar

I can’t imagine staying with a financial advisor who didn’t give me decent returns on my money. I would be interested to see the statistics on those who manage their own funds; unless they are savants or exceptions, I would imagine that their results would be similar or worse. I have a separate tax advisor but she works well with my financial guy.

Sounds as though it was a wonderful day. The flowers are wonderfully colorful.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I like cut flowers! I don’t have to stress about keeping them alive like I do a plant. I’ve had many failures with plants!

Happy Birthday. Looks like a fun day with many birthday wishes and the best of them from the grandsons. Loved all the pictures Wendy

    1. Margaret Avatar

The grandsons’ greetings warmed my heart! It was thoughtful of their parents to organize them.

I’m glad you had a good birthday! Some insects can be beautiful!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Some of them are gorgeous and colorful, but I still wouldn’t want to meet up with one alive. The ones at the museum are gigantic!

You are in for a busy weekend to start your 70th decade. Enjoy every minute!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Very busy! The next couple weeks will be challenging, getting ready for the Ireland trip and making decisions!

Your birthday celebrations sound fabulous and so much fun.
The insect museum would be a first for me. Have fun. Knowing the insects are enclosed in glass means they can do no harm.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, the insects and reptiles were all in glass cases or dead. We got to see a lizard eating a cockroach which the boys enjoyed.

Happy Birthday. Sounds like it was meaningful.

The picture with the flowers is special. You look very thin. Wonder what the secret is to growing petunias that lush.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I can’t believe those petunias start out small; I wonder what she meant by that? I’ve never been able to keep even one hanging basket alive. They need a LOT of watering! Petunias love sun and heat, so the front of the restaurant must be an ideal spot. I don’t feel thin at all!

  15. Linda Avatar

Beautiful photos, dear Margaret!!! Happy Birthday, dear friend! I will be 70 in two months. Thank you so much for sharing your life and experiences here!

    1. Margaret Avatar

70 has crept up on me. It feels weird to tell people that I’m that age. I would rather be in my late 60s!

  16. J Avatar

Happy (belated) Birthday! It’s strange to find myself getting older. I don’t feel older, mentally, but I do have aches and pains that I didn’t used to have. Not so fond of that part. It looks like you had some really good celebrations. I hope you’re excited about your trip. I’ve fallen really behind in my blog reading, I thought you were cancelling that.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It is strange to reach this big number yet still (mostly) feel like I’m in my 40s, except when I do something stupid. The 70th celebration is tomorrow and I’m looking forward to it while also dreading it. I don’t like a big hoopla! The trip is coming closer and closer; I should be preparing more than I am or am I just an overplanner?

  17. Steve Avatar

Happy birthday once again! Those petunias are INCREDIBLE! How does she keep them so fresh-looking? I have so many questions.

Re. your financial advisor, I imagine both you and John are correct!

    1. Margaret Avatar

John and I asked her if they were big or small when she bought them and she said small. Of course there are a multitude of plants in there and she must give them plant food and lots of water. They look like that every year! Yes, my financial advisor makes a good living; he’s also been married twice: once to an attorney for Amazon and I’m not sure who his current husband works for, but I think he makes a lot of money as well.
