A View Into My Universe

It’s nearly the middle of October, isn’t it? We often have a gorgeous fall here with sunny days, yet mild temperatures and dark, cool nights. That’s probably why autumn is my favorite season–but only by a whisker. So many people LOVE summer which is a nearly perfect time in the Pacific Northwest with our moderate climate and mountains and water. There are many fantastic activities to do outside, and we can actually be outside comfortably! However, due to our northern latitude, summer is way too bright until late at night and I don’t sleep as well due to that. As for winter, it can be cozy with pleasant days, but it’s also rainy and gray. However, I’m hoping for lots of mountain snow for our vital snowpack. And no atmospheric rivers, please. I’ve come to love spring as well although the yard and flower beds need tons of work after my lazy winter hibernation; I often feel overwhelmed. The plusses are that I’m always excited to see which tulips bloom and that I eagerly anticipate picking out my annuals.

So, what happens when fall feels like summer? The past few days it’s meant mowing, planting the tulips, sprinkling the godawful bulb fertilizer in the beds and splurging on some cyclamen, one of my favorite flowers.

Here are the tulips I chose, quite an eclectic bunch. I couldn’t resist two bags of parrot tulips although they never last more than a year for me. I mainly stuck to two tone blooms but also threw in a couple peony style tulips. I planted in small bunches, both in the new front flower bed and the back side one. I’m SO excited for spring! (and it’s not even winter yet)

Cyclamen come in all different colors and I couldn’t resist any of them! I overspent…

Every October, I wear my “I like black cats and I cannot lie” shirt and try to get a photo of me in it, holding Mari. And EVERY YEAR, Mari refuses to cooperate.

Perhaps I could photoshop her onto my lap?

Anders is very into selfies these days, “I want a picture with Grandma!”

Meanwhile, sweet little Ian is pulling himself up on everything, standing briefly without holding on and then plopping down on his rear. His back seems to be better and he’s in good spirits. Now Anders has a strange mark on his leg though and apparently impetigo is going around at daycare. A few weeks ago, it was hand, foot and mouth disease. Both boys have eczema and it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s going on with them disease-wise when the skin is involved. And getting in to see the doctor can be tricky, especially for working parents. Sigh.

Tomorrow I’ll be granny nannying for Sharky who is off school for a Professional Development Day. I used to travel a lot on this weekend when OD lived in New York City, then Los Angeles, then New York again. I wasn’t at all fond of those red eye flights to JFK, yet I have mostly wonderful memories of my visits to the three different cities in NY and CA: the food, the sights, the beaches, the orchards, the museums, the historic cities, and of course, time with my daughter.

Although I rarely post about politics and would rather not even think about them most of the time (I do vote!), I’m sickened and angry at the idea of live streaming an execution. Are we living in the land of the American Taliban?

On that “cheerful” note, happy almost Friday?

Glad the eczema is better. My brother deals with that and I remember he had to take baths in an Avon product. Lovely flowers, can’t wait to see photos of them in the spring.

It comes and goes. It seems like it almost completely clears and then there’s a flareup. I wish there were a magic treatment for it! I’m very curious to see how my tulip planting turns out. I can be a little too abstract random sometimes. I did try for clusters that were evenly spaced apart, but we shall see!

Couldn’t agree more about the live streaming of an execution. What kind of barbarians are we? It’s revolting, and so is Hegseth, who apparently is the one pushing this. I really hope someone can do something to stop this being shown to the public.

    1. Margaret Avatar

We are in company with Afghanistan, North Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Barbaric indeed. I’m appalled that it could even be considered. I want to say that nothing surprises me these days, but this did.

When I saw the news about the streaming of the execution, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I am not sure why I couldn’t believe it as by this time one would think I would be used to all of the chaos and injustice coming from the current administration. It is amazing how far our country has fallen in just two years.

My best friend’s son lived in Seattle for about five years. He loved the summers, but found the winters to be difficult. I think he is someone who suffers from not getting enough sunlight. I think I would adapt to the climate in the PNW pretty easily as I do not like hot and humid summers. But once summer is over, fall, winter and spring are great.

Little Ian’s eyes are so beautiful.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I couldn’t believe it either! I think about all the mass murderers alive in prison and wonder why they want to make a public example out of this guy. Plus, if Hegseth thinks it will be a deterrent, he’s woefully ignorant of the terrorist mindset which will elevate him to a martyr, just like suicide bombers or the terrorist pilots on 9-11. I don’t find winters difficult (mostly) because we rarely get torrential or all-day rains. The gray skies can be a bit much though. Thank you, I do love Ian’s eyes!

I am against the death penalty myself. Isn’t “Thou shall not kill” one of the 10 commandments?

    2. Margaret Avatar

Some would say I’m a hypocrite because as well as being against the death penalty, I’m also pro-choice.

      1. Michael Avatar

        Same here.

I’ve been getting a lot of yard work done myself this past week.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It feels great although I’m sore this morning. I tend to want to get it all done at once and may have to change that mindset.

I thought our autumn was going to be quite warm at first, but it hasn’t turned out that way. We will have to put the front garden to bed fairly soon, maybe next week after Thanksgiving this coming Monday.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Our weather is changing today although not severely. We’ll have rain and our temperatures will drop into the 60s for the next week. (with more sun coming) However, the nights are dropping into the 40s and high 30s!

Boy are you going to have a flowery spring! I think Fall is my favorite time of year here in southwestern PA. Bright and sunny days around 70F and chilly nights around 40 the last couple weeks. Not looking forward to nightfall coming at 520 though. Margaret, that’s a sweet pic of you and Anders, and glad to hear Ian is improving. The public execution thing is unreal, 90 years since this last occurred? Well, after we lost Roe vs Wade, nothing surprises me anymore.

    1. Margaret Avatar

That’s exactly the kind of weather I love! Nightfall comes even earlier here in the winter; it was difficult when I worked but now that I’m retired, I can fit in everything outdoors before dusk. I’m hoping for lots of tulips! I never know what I’m going to get and that’s the fun of it. I have very mixed feelings about any execution due to many factors. And does Hegseth really not understand the terrorist mind? He doesn’t remember the 9-11 pilots training for years for suicide missions? This will make a martyr out of him.

The weather here seems to be flipping back and forth between summer and autumn.

What time does the sun set in midsummer? Here, it’s about 9pm.

R is also walking around on the furniture and standing for a few seconds. She is *still* teething (two more teeth just coming through!).

    1. Margaret Avatar

That’s probably when the sun sets here too although it feels like it’s still light at 10. (not pitch black) Ian isn’t walking around the furniture yet but I’m sure he’ll be trying soon. Teething seems like it goes on forever!

You bought a lovely large selection of tulip bulbs. Planting in large numbers make a great display. Don’t we all need Spring flowers after a long Winter of rain/snow, cold, and even ice sometimes. Tulips grow well for you, so I’d expect a beautiful Spring flower display.
You and Anders take a good selfie. Your smiles make me smile too.
As for the latest thinking on execution, coming out of the highest office in the land it is horrific, an unimaginable nightmare X10.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Thank you, Susan! I’m still planning out my fall flowers; I think I may need a few more cyclamen once my annuals die. I may even plant some ornamental kale and cabbage which I haven’t done for years. They’re hardy in winter whereas my cyclamen will only last if it stays in the 50s or perhaps high 40s.

Those late sunsets were one of the reasons I didn’t like summer in the PNW. That and the lack of rain! I know that’s a plus to a lot of folks, but not me. Our latest sunset here is a little after 8:30, so it’s good and dark when I go to bed…as it should be!

I hope autumn decides to pay you a return visit soon.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, the late light messes with my sleep, even with a blackout blind! We did have a little rain today–but not enough to water my lawn. I refuse to use a sprinkler in October.

What is up with WordPress asking me to create an account all of a sudden? I tried to “like” a comment above and it wouldn’t let me do so unless I signed in. Argh! Anyway, at least it lets me comment as a guest.

You DID get some nice tulips and cyclamens!

    1. Margaret Avatar

WP is being weird for me also and making me log in to other blogs to comment. I’m a WP user! My late husband disliked tulips, so we never had any; perhaps that’s why I’ve gone crazy planting a bunch?

  11. Suzanne Avatar

Your cyclamen are gorgeous! I would not have been able to resist, either. I am excited about your tulips, too! I adore tulips!

Giggling about your kitty completely refusing to be photographed with your (fabulous) shirt.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m hoping that I haven’t planted them too randomly. My clusters weren’t as evenly spaced as I wanted since my annuals are still there and flourishing in our low 70s temperatures. I will keep trying through October but doubt I’ll succeed. Mari only allows snuggling on her own terms!

As an early riser, I have trouble with the long days as well. Spring here in California can be hit and miss! We have Spring like days and then it’s back to rain and fog!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I don’t rise that early, but much prefer standard time to DST. Plus, scientists and experts say that it’s better for our circadian rhythms. Morning light is much more important to our health than afternoon/evening.

How can one be pro-life and support executions? Killing people has always been a popular occasion. Our Judge Parker’s hanging at Fort Smith were big events— families too. In old England the Tyburn killings were an all day happing. The accused rode in a cart, could give a speech, before the final moment. In 1571, a famous permanent triangular three-legged gallows (known as the “Tyburn Tree”) was built, which could hang up to 24 people at the same time. We are still barbarians.

Those tulips are hope for a bright, cherry day. All flowers should provide joy. The one who toils in planting will surely have a reward.

Those boys may outgrow the skin problem. Wouldn’t that be grand. The four boys keep your days full. Before they were yours, life was never this good!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I would love them to outgrow the skin problem! YD did and had a perfect complexion until her early thirties. Now it’s a mess with rosacea and she doesn’t do as much as she needs to, treatment wise. It’s painful for me to see. When people say, “We’re better than this,” about the latest outrages, I think about the past 10 years or so and realize, no, we’re really not. The covers have been ripped off the ugly side of this country, and I doubt that we can ever go back. Not in my lifetime anyway. At least my tulips and other flowers bring me joy! The grandsons are wonderfully entertaining. And if all else fails, I can escape into a book!

We took an audio tour in London. At one point we passed a place where they used to do public executions. The actor on the audio kept saying, “We Londoners love a public hanging.” What are we? Going back to medieval times?

    1. Margaret Avatar

We seem to be going back to medieval times in many ways: public executions, the erosion of women’s rights, the rolling back of equality/equity and anti-vaccine and anti-science attitudes. Many of these people haven’t studied history (or don’t care) nor have they walked through old cemeteries and seen the numerous graves of dead children and families wiped out by illnesses that we now have vaccines for.

My youngest grandson is doing the same thing as sweet Ian.

Just read about the live-streaming plans this morning. Appalling. Surreal.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I hope they come up and look pretty! It’s always a gamble for me since I’m not the greatest or most organized planter. For some reason I was thinking about the mass murderers still alive in prison: David Berkowitz (Son of Sam), Gary Ridgeway (the Green River Killer), James Homes who killed 12 in a movie theater, among others. Many others have died in prison like Charles Manson. They committed heinous and cruel crimes yet didn’t face a televised firing squad. The public viewing is barbaric; we haven’t come as far in our society and culture as I thought we had. 🙁

I already look forward to seeing your tulips next year. I had impetigo once when I was in high school. It was nasty. The treatment was an antibiotic and I wasn’t supposed to use any soap or put on any lotions until it went away. I don’t know if the treatment is the same now. My mom always insisted I never had chicken pox, but I did. She didn’t see it — I’m sure because of my eczema. Both my kids had hand, foot, and mouth. Children go from one thing to the next, don’t they?

    Love,

    Janie

    1. Margaret Avatar

It’s ridiculous for me to be so excited over those tulips, but I am! My older daughter’s boys were misdiagnosed with impetigo one time; it’s not easy to distinguish from other skin illnesses. Some treatments haven’t come a very long way, unfortunately. Like for eczema. 🙁 Kids catch anything and everything! My older daughter was a hypochondriac as a child (still is somewhat), so I forced her to go to swimming lessons, even though she was whining about not feeling good. It turned out that she had the 5th Disease, which I’d never heard of. Bad parenting award right here!

Here in southeast Michigan, the lowest temperature I’ve seen in my little microclimate is something like 45. It gets a little colder for folks out in the “country” but still not below freezing. That is very unusual for us although we (historically) often have an “Indian” summer.

    1. Margaret Avatar

We’ve been having that late summer with temperatures in the low to mid 70s. The plants are very confused! I assume you’re talking about fall temperatures there. Even in winter we don’t many freezing nights. It’s usually high 30s but we have had a few years where we got a period of 20s for lows, even teens.
