A View Into My Universe

Fast Times at Rogers High

For those of you following the Melissa story(my friend’s 16 year old daughter with cancer), here is an update from her grandpa.
The meeting of the committee of doctors at Children’s Hospital all agreed, no surgery at this time, to remove anything. Things are on hold for the next two weeks, no chemotherapy, but, a probe and biopsy on one of the lymph nodes to determine why it has swelling or maybe is cancerous and growing. She will also have a new cat scan with another MRI.
I am sure you have lots of questions, but I have few answers for the time being. Thank you all for your interest and prayers. Thankfully Melissa is in good spirits, is in school and feeling well. Merle

School has been extremely stressful the past two days, almost unbearable. I haven’t been sleeping very well and have a horrible headache right now, stabbing pain in the back of my head. OUCH! Ironically, my students are fabulous and I’m enjoying them very much! In second year we are studying Ivory coast, so I brought them some plaintains, okra, mangoes and papayas. They were eager to try the new foods and their excitement was well worth the $18 I spent on the food. In my first year groups, I have some REAL characters, but I am getting to know them and appreciate them. I guess my students would say that I’m sort of insane myself, but they seem to enjoy my funny little games and songs. My 3/4 split is going as well as a split class can; some students wanted me to teach the group together, but many preferred a separate curriculum. I decided to compromise and do some days together and others divided. The problem is that there are 25 of them and only one of me! Planning it all takes lots of time since I must include some independent work and then syncronize the activities–SO complicated. The kids are great though!(with one exception and he knows who he is…)School district politics SUCK! I can’t really write more about it until I sort out my feelings and actually figure out what they are going to do to screw up all our schedules. It is NOT the building admin’s fault; they are so supportive and crying about the decisions they are forced to make. If I were to write out how I feel right now, it would be so vicious that it would BURN UP THIS SITE! I need to try for some peaceful thoughts…Anyone got any?

Let me guess: they’re cancelling recess. (Ooops, wrong district!) Sorry, I really shouldn’t be flippant, and I most sincerely appreciate your stress and angst over admin’s STUPID DECISIONS. They are prevalent in the commercial world, too. ARGH! At least it’s Friday! That’s one good (little) thing!

I am so impressed with your dedication as a teacher – I think teaching is one of the most difficult job out there and very stressful. It is great to hear how much you love it and put into it.
