A View Into My Universe

The Neverending (Birthday) Story

Finally, three days after the fact, I managed to get my free Venti mocha from Starbucks; I’ve been so busy with the Coffee Crawl, grandsons and just plain laziness to leave the house in the morning. Thankfully, they have extended their range for claiming the birthday treat from just that day to a span of nearly a week. For those not into Sbux, I will explain here that they make one of the best mochas around, that their chocolate is very chocolatey (unlike some cafes who must use chocolate milk) and that I like a strongly brewed espresso. In fact, the only person who makes a better mocha is me! šŸ™‚

My days are often filled with grandsons, like this little charmer. Although I do like spending lots of time with them, Younger Daughter is once again dealing with struggles, chaos and poor decisions. I never imagined that “parenting” adults could be so stressful…and thankless.

Look at these toofers! His smile is completely different now. And his older brother is an excellent singer, isn’t he?

Yesterday it was a trip to the Bug and Reptile Museum with a stop off at a coffee shop in a gritty city, then a lunch at a different trendy place. Quite a contrast and I found both interesting. One had a free kiosk for naloxone (overdose antidote) whereas the other had multi-million dollar homes overlooking the harbor and, on a good day, Mount Rainier.

This was my favorite snake–so cosy!

I snapped the picture a little too late; this guy had just chowed down on a huge cockroach. The little boys were transfixed!

The mountain would be sitting out in the middle on a clear day but we’re still having a few smoke issues. The air quality remains decent though. (19 today)

Sharky was having a moment of some Big Emotions. We gave him space, not that we had much of a choice!

Tomorrow will be the finale of my week long birthday celebration with a party at Dystopian State Brewery, a fitting name for how I’ve been feeling lately about some members of my family, as well as the country and the world. I have mixed feelings about the hoopla and would have wished for a little less attention. However, I’m eager for my Costco Chocolate Mousse cake and OD’s homemade Hummingbird Cake. Can the birthday girl have two slices? On our Coffee Crawl the other day, a barista at XO Expresso (not the proper spelling!), told me, “I thought I’d misheard when you said you had celebrated your 70th birthday. I would have never guessed you were THAT OLD!” The barista at Sbux today, ” You look great! I hope I look like you at 70.”

Those types of comments are an extra gift, aren’t they?

Are those top teeth? Walter just started with his two bottom teeth. You do look great! I want to go out to Ziggy’s Cat Lounge in Bremerton. The reptile plase would make a great second stop!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Ian has his two bottom teeth and now just got the two top ones. Both my daughters were early teethers. Obro took until almost 12 months to get any teeth at all. Older daughter was getting a little worried! I would have loved to know about Ziggy’s Cat CafĆ© because I would guarantee that we would’ve ended up there.

Love all your photos, Margaret! Ian is precious! And the museum is fascinating.

    1. Margaret Avatar

We loved all the reptiles and bugs. Very colorful! I wouldn’t want to meet up with most of them in the wild though. The little boys were particularly fascinated with the gift shop šŸ˜‚, but their mother was strict and would only buy them something that they could do, not another stuffed animal or hand puppet.

I’m glad you got your free coffee! I didn’t know Starbucks did that.

    I liked the reptile photos.

E and I need more parental help (financial and otherwise) than we would like…

    1. Margaret Avatar

They do if you are a member, which I am since Starbucks is everywhere here. It’s hard to know how much to help because it puts the recipient in an uncomfortable position sometimes, feeling dependent. Yet I have the money and I have the time and eventually I won’t be around. My daughters will inherit my money, so why not make their lives more comfortable now when needed?

I love Starbucks coffee. Just regular coffee. It’s very good. I line their sweet breads. That cake OD is making is a favorite of mine. It goes great with a cup of coffee.

Your youngest grandson doesn’t seen to have any bad days. He’s always smiling and showing off his beautiful eyes.

    1. Margaret Avatar

I like their Pike Place decaf also, on a cold winter night–with some Belgian chocolate hazelnut creamer. It’s such a treat! For my mochas, I use Equal Exchange, Mind, Body and Soul coffee. Ian is a real delight! 🄰 Many people here are not familiar with hummingbird cake. I had it once in Seattle and fell madly in love with it.

My goodness, the celebrations continue! Loved the photos of you and Ian, and Ian’s two toofers–he is such a happy little boy! The museum looked like a lot of fun (really) and whoops about Sharky, I hope he’s better? You’ve had quite the week!

    1. Margaret Avatar

I have to be very careful now of letting Ian snuggle me on the shoulder because I could get bitten! The museum was very cool. And it’s free although I did donate $20. Sharky was fine after a few minutes. We just left him alone.

That snake photo gives me the willies. Looking forward to tomorrow!

    1. Margaret Avatar

It was an adorable pose though, don’t you think? Cute, coiled snake! The daughters have been secretive about my party, just asking me what kind of cake(s) I wanted. I was allowed to tell them who I didn’t want invited, but not who I DID, so I’m afraid that some friends might get left out. Glad you’ll be there!

I suppose every family has drama. I’m fortunate that drama is rare in my family.

    1. Margaret Avatar

It used to be rare in mine as well. I never would have imagined what I’m dealing with.

I know most babies and toddlers are cute, but yours are especially so. They also look like lots of fun to be with – you are a lucky Grandma! Of course you have issues and family conflicts to deal with amidst it all, but you make it look quite rewarding. Enjoy the big party tomorrow and get packing, haha.

    1. Margaret Avatar

The grandsons are cute, interesting, and fun BUT also can be stubborn, and emotional. (melt downs) The family issues have been serious this year and I hope they can be resolved. I will try to enjoy my party, especially the people who make the effort to come. And the cakes of course! Packing, lalalalala.

It’s a nice thing to hear that you don’t look that old. Cherish it. šŸ™‚

    1. Margaret Avatar

I do because it probably won’t last. Both my parents looked much younger than their ages, but I’m not counting on that.

I’ve never been to Bremerton. When I hear “gritty city,” the first one that pops into my head is Tacoma!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Tacoma is a gritty city, especially the south end and to some extent the Hilltop. The latter has been cleaned up a lot and there are some fabulous restaurants there currently. North Tacoma is fancy and other parts of the city have been gentrified, so not gritty at all. The waterfront (Ruston Way) is amazing. I’ve never seen one of those overdose recovery kiosks in Tacoma although there might be some in places I haven’t been. Bremerton’s downtown seemed quite gritty–yet also interesting.

  11. Steve Avatar

Bremerton has a big naval base, doesn’t it? Or a shipyard or something?

I like the napkin-over-the-head method of dealing with “big emotions.” LOL!

    1. Margaret Avatar

Yes, Bremerton has a naval shipyard. There have been times when I’ve wanted to hide under a napkin or blanket for a while. Especially lately!

Boys are fascinated with insects and reptiles, that’s my experience. The museum must have been a perfect match for Sharky and Obro. My son used to catch insects and reptiles, basically anything he found behind the house. Any given day, there were a few buckets on the patio with his latest find. Each night he’d release everything. (My rule.)
    Happy healthy boys are outstanding.
Adulting can be stressful especially when everything falls on you. Working full time and managing a household with children can’t be easy. Your daughters are successfully employed, and both are doing well. One doing it entirely/mostly on her own is a huge accomplishment. Stress is understandable. I am glad you are there for your daughters.
I would do exactly the same. Having the resources to help is great.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Sharky is much more interested than Obro, but anything his big brother likes is cool to Obro! šŸ™‚ I like what you did with your son: allowed him to catch the critters and then release them. YD has a full plate and doesn’t handle the stress well. I try to smooth over the rough edges with marginal success. I want to respect my daughters’ independence and adulthood while also making their lives easier. A tricky balance!

Hope the party goes ok! And yes, you don’t look seventy. Sympathy with the family dynamics. Gah.

    1. Margaret Avatar

There is such a wide range of what people look like at different ages. I see many my age who have deep wrinkles in their cheeks, which I do not. Perhaps it’s because I’m not a sun lover and I’ve always worn sunblock? I don’t know if it’s a positive to shove issues under the rug but for my party that’s what will happen.

As always the kid pictures are very fun to experience, thank you for sharing them. And the napkin over the head, such a good idea, seems like enlightened parenting. I can remember as a child being put out in the car “until I could behave” when something upset me during a restaurant meal, imagine!

Good luck with the packing – I’m a great list maker on such occasions and have to guard against over packing.

    Cheers,
    Ceci

    1. Margaret Avatar

I’m glad you enjoyed them! I do share too many but they are such a huge and important part of my life. We ignored the napkin on the head and just kept making idle conversation until he was ready to “come out.” I only have one carry on so my packing will have to be strategic.

My goodness, Ian is an absolutely adorable baby. Those eyes are gorgeous!
I am not a fan of snakes and reptiles. I don’t like critters, Ish but, I am glad you
all had a fun time. Again, Happy Birthday. It’s ok to let things go for the sake of a
family party and to smooth things out for the day.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Ian is very cute; I’m hoping he keeps those blue eyes. His brother’s turned green. The boys like insects way more than I do although I do enjoy reptiles. (some of them from a distance) I agree with smoothing things out–sometimes there isn’t a way to resolve the situation. We can’t change it or make it go away.

    Margaret:

Anders is such a sweet little kid!!!!! His singing was so very cute!!!! I do hope that he and Ian can both navigate the parental challenges in as unscathed a way as possible, and retain their happiness and joy!!!!!

I agree with you about being a parent of adults. It can often be thankless and sad and hurtful. It is sometimes too hard to recall the happiness and joys from when our kids were younger.

The bug and reptile museum looks like it was probably great fun for all!!!!

I hope that your brewery party was fun, and hopefully perhaps, some of the family conflict will perhaps have at least dissipated…… or perhaps even become resolved in a positive fashion (keeping fingers crossed).

Both the chocolate mousse cake and the hummingbird cake sound wonderful!!!! After you talked about it previously, I went and looked more deeply at recipes of hummingbird cakes….. and I am thinking/hoping sometime this Fall, when I feel in a baking mood, I may try to make one!!!!! A question about cakes for you….. have you ever had what is called a “Heath Bar Cake” or a “Watergate Cake”? Those are two cakes I very much love and recall from my youth…. my Mom made each type pretty often, and they were both amazing treats!!! Neither is fancy (just a single layer type of rectangular cake, but each is SO wonderful (at least for me, perhaps, in terms of memories).

Addendum: “Boris the Spider” (in the photo of Orbo and Sharkey)….. reminds me a bit of the cartoon, “Johnny Quest” which was probably from 1963 or 1964, Did you ever, by chance, see this cartoon series? Boris reminded me of the giant mechanical spider (actually, it was more like a “daddy long-legs than a spider) in the opening theme of the cartoon (and one specific episode of the series).

Anders is such a doll, but very strong-willed like most (many?) three-year-olds. I’m very protective of him. Adult children are often no fun at all. šŸ™ Big kids equal big problems, eh? The brewery party was fun indeed with several surprise guests. I would LOVE a photo of your hummingbird cake; mine didn’t have coconut (which I love) due to a couple guests not liking it. There are recipes with it and without it, according to your preference. My older daughter’s cake looked quite professional! I’ve never heard of either cake but will look them up. I do love Heath Bars. I was a fanatical watcher of Jonny Quest! However, I don’t remember the spider. šŸ™‚

        Pipe Tobacco

Hah! Your (correct) spelling of ā€œJonny Questā€ tickled me….. because it jarred in me the memory as a kid how I really liked the unique spelling of ā€œJonnyā€ā€¦ā€¦ I had forgotten that until I saw you write it that way!

I suspect my Hummingbird Cake will NEED to be sans coconut….. not because it would not be good……better in fact….. but unfortunately my wife abhors coconut (and also any sort of olive)……I could truthfully eat a big jar of any sort of olives every day if left to my own whims. šŸ™‚

      2. Margaret Avatar

I automatically spelled it that way! The memory is a strange and amazing thing. (sometimes) I would recommend adding some flaked coconut to the top of your pieces of hummingbird cake, like on the frosting. I love the combo of coconut, pecans and pineapple. I’m a fan of black olives, but not of green.

I’m glad that Starbucks has changed their birthday policy, I never liked that I had to go ON MY BIRTHDAY. I’m always amazed that something as huge as a mountain can be shrouded in clouds when it’s mostly sunny outside. I know there’s smoke in your current situation, but even when it’s just a bit cloudy sometimes our mountain is hiding. We went to Alaska 3 years ago, and didn’t get to see Denali for that reason. SIGH.

    1. Margaret Avatar

Originally, we had a week to redeem our birthday treat, then it went to ONE DAY. I’m also glad they went back to giving more time–perhaps all the complaints from people like me? šŸ™‚ I’m not sure we have smoke, but it hasn’t been completely clear either. Our air quality today is moderate. I still haven’t seen Denali, even after three trips to Alaska.
